ClickFix Attacks Expand Using Fake CAPTCHAs, Microsoft Scripts, and Trusted Web Services

ClickFix Attacks Expand Using Fake CAPTCHAs, Microsoft Scripts, and Trusted Web Services

Jan 27, 2026 Malware / Enterprise Security
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a new campaign that combines ClickFix -style fake CAPTCHAs with a signed Microsoft Application Virtualization ( App-V ) script to distribute an information stealer called Amatera . "Instead of launching PowerShell directly, the attacker uses this script to control how execution begins and to avoid more common, easily recognized execution paths," Blackpoint researchers Jack Patrick and Sam Decker said in a report published last week. In doing so, the idea is to transform the App-V script into a living-off-the-land (LotL) binary that proxies the execution of PowerShell through a trusted Microsoft component to conceal the malicious activity. The starting point of the attack is a fake CAPTCHA verification prompt that seeks to trick users into pasting and executing a malicious command on the Windows Run dialog. But here is where the attack diverges from traditional ClickFix attacks. The supplied command, rather than invokin...

5 Most Common Malware Techniques in 2024

Nov 07, 2024 Malware Analysis / Windows Security
Tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) form the foundation of modern defense strategies. Unlike indicators of compromise (IOCs), TTPs are more stable, making them a reliable way to identify specific cyber threats. Here are some of the most commonly used techniques, according to ANY.RUN's Q3 2024 report on malware trends, complete with real-world examples. Disabling of Windows Event Logging (T1562.002) Disrupting Windows Event Logging helps attackers prevent the system from recording crucial information about their malicious actions. Without event logs, important details such as login attempts, file modifications, and system changes go unrecorded, leaving security solutions and analysts with incomplete or missing data. Windows Event Logging can be manipulated in different ways, including by changing registry keys or using commands like “net stop eventlog”. Altering group policies is another common method. Since many detection mechanisms rely on log analysis to identify s...
WhatsApp Malware 'Maverick' Hijacks Browser Sessions to Target Brazil's Biggest Banks

WhatsApp Malware 'Maverick' Hijacks Browser Sessions to Target Brazil's Biggest Banks

Nov 11, 2025 Malware / Botnet
Threat hunters have uncovered similarities between a banking malware called Coyote and a newly disclosed malicious program dubbed Maverick that has been propagated via WhatsApp. According to a report from CyberProof, both malware strains are written in .NET, target Brazilian users and banks, and feature identical functionality to decrypt, targeting banking URLs and monitor banking applications. More importantly, both include the ability to spread through WhatsApp Web . Maverick was first documented by Trend Micro early last month, attributing it to a threat actor dubbed Water Saci . The campaign involves two components: A self-propagating malware referred to as SORVEPOTEL that's spread via the desktop web version of WhatsApp and is used to deliver a ZIP archive containing the Maverick payload. The malware is designed to monitor active browser window tabs for URLs that match a hard-coded list of financial institutions in Latin America. Should the URLs match, it establishes con...

Cybercriminals Deploy CORNFLAKE.V3 Backdoor via ClickFix Tactic and Fake CAPTCHA Pages

Cybercriminals Deploy CORNFLAKE.V3 Backdoor via ClickFix Tactic and Fake CAPTCHA Pages

Aug 21, 2025 Malware / Cryptocurrency
Threat actors have been observed leveraging the deceptive social engineering tactic known as ClickFix to deploy a versatile backdoor codenamed CORNFLAKE.V3. Google-owned Mandiant described the activity, which it tracks as UNC5518, as part of an access-as-a-service scheme that employs fake CAPTCHA pages as lures to trick users into providing initial access to their systems, which is then monetized by other threat groups. "The initial infection vector, dubbed ClickFix, involves luring users on compromised websites to copy a malicious PowerShell script and execute it via the Windows Run dialog box," Google said in a report published today. The access provided by UNC5518 is assessed to be leveraged by at least two different hacking groups, UNC5774 and UNC4108, to initiate a multi-stage infection process and drop additional payloads - UNC5774, another financially motivated group that delivers CORNFLAKE as a way to deploy various subsequent payloads UNC4108, a threat act...

Konni Hackers Deploy AI-Generated PowerShell Backdoor Against Blockchain Developers

Jan 26, 2026 Malware / Endpoint Security
The North Korean threat actor known as Konni has been observed using PowerShell malware generated using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to target developers and engineering teams in the blockchain sector. The phishing campaign has targeted Japan, Australia, and India, highlighting the adversary's expansion of the targeting scope beyond South Korea , Russia , Ukraine , and European nations , Check Point Research said in a technical report published last week. Active since at least 2014, Konni is primarily known for its targeting of organizations and individuals in South Korea. It's also tracked as Earth Imp, Opal Sleet, Osmium, TA406, and Vedalia. In November 2025, the Genians Security Center (GSC) detailed the hacking group's targeting of Android devices by exploiting Google's asset tracking service, Find Hub, to remotely reset victim devices and erase personal data from them, signaling a new escalation of their tradecraft. As recently as this month, Konni ha...

The update is in addition to 17 shortcomings the tech giant patched in its Chromium-based Edge browser since the release of the November 2025 Patch Tuesday update . This also consists of a s...
Researcher Analyzes 3,000 Live ClickFix Payloads, Exposing API-Driven Malware Delivery

Researcher Analyzes 3,000 Live ClickFix Payloads, Exposing API-Driven Malware Delivery

Jul 01, 2026 Threat Intelligence / Social Engineering
ClickFix , the trick that fools people into running malware by hand, has quietly grown a back office. New research shows the malicious commands behind its fake "prove you're human" pages are now handed out by API-driven servers that give each visitor the same malware in a different disguise. The same research also turned up a new delivery method built to slip past Windows' script scanning. Security researcher Bert-Jan Pals took apart several ClickFix platforms and analyzed roughly 3,000 payloads from live campaigns. He presented the findings at  OrangeCon  in early June and  published the details  on June 30. ClickFix is simple by design. A booby-trapped page shows a fake CAPTCHA or error, hidden JavaScript drops a command into your clipboard, and the page tells you to press a key combo, paste, and hit Enter. You run the malware yourself. There's usually no exploit at the first step and often no file for traditional antivirus to flag, so conventional emai...
Node.js Malware Campaign Targets Crypto Users with Fake Binance and TradingView Installers

Node.js Malware Campaign Targets Crypto Users with Fake Binance and TradingView Installers

Apr 17, 2025 Cybersecurity / Malware
Microsoft is calling attention to an ongoing malvertising campaign that makes use of Node.js to deliver malicious payloads capable of information theft and data exfiltration. The activity, first detected in October 2024, uses lures related to cryptocurrency trading to trick users into installing a rogue installer from fraudulent websites that masquerade as legitimate software like Binance or TradingView. The downloaded installer comes embedded with a dynamic-link library ("CustomActions.dll") that's responsible for harvesting basic system information using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) and setting up persistence on the host via a scheduled task. In an attempt to keep up the ruse, the DLL launches a browser window via " msedge_proxy.exe " that displays the legitimate cryptocurrency trading website. It's worth noting that "msedge_proxy.exe" can be used to display any website as a web application. The scheduled task, in the meanwhile...
ClickFix Campaigns Spread MacSync macOS Infostealer via Fake AI Tool Installers

ClickFix Campaigns Spread MacSync macOS Infostealer via Fake AI Tool Installers

Mar 16, 2026 Malvertising / Threat Intelligence
Three different ClickFix campaigns have been found to act as a delivery vector for the deployment of a macOS information stealer called MacSync . "Unlike traditional exploit-based attacks, this method relies entirely on user interaction – usually in the form of copying and executing commands – making it particularly effective against users who may not appreciate the implications of running unknown and obfuscated terminal commands," Sophos researchers Jagadeesh Chandraiah, Tonmoy Jitu, Dmitry Samosseiko, and Matt Wixey said . It's currently not known if the campaigns are the work of the same threat actor. The use of ClickFix lures to distribute the malware was also flagged by Jamf Threat Labs in December 2025. The details of the three campaigns are as follows - November 2025: A campaign that used OpenAI's ChatGPT Atlas web browser as bait, delivered via sponsored search results on Google, to direct users to a fake Google Sites URL with a download button that, whe...
CrashFix Chrome Extension Delivers ModeloRAT Using ClickFix-Style Browser Crash Lures

CrashFix Chrome Extension Delivers ModeloRAT Using ClickFix-Style Browser Crash Lures

Jan 19, 2026 Malware / Windows Security
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of an ongoing campaign dubbed KongTuke that used a malicious Google Chrome extension masquerading as an ad blocker to deliberately crash the web browser and trick victims into running arbitrary commands using ClickFix -like lures to deliver a previously undocumented remote access trojan (RAT) dubbed ModeloRAT. This new escalation of ClickFix, observed earlier this month, has been codenamed CrashFix by Huntress. KongTuke , also tracked as 404 TDS, Chaya_002, LandUpdate808, and TAG-124, is the name given to a traffic distribution system (TDS) known for profiling victim hosts before redirecting them to a payload delivery site that infects their systems. Access to these compromised hosts is then handed off to other threat actors, including ransomware groups, for follow-on malware delivery. Some of the cybercriminal groups that have leveraged TAG-124 infrastructure include Rhysida ransomware , Interlock ransomware , and TA866 (aka Asylu...
Hackers Exploit WordPress Sites to Power Next-Gen ClickFix Phishing Attacks

Hackers Exploit WordPress Sites to Power Next-Gen ClickFix Phishing Attacks

Oct 08, 2025 Malware / Data Security
Cybersecurity researchers are calling attention to a nefarious campaign targeting WordPress sites to make malicious JavaScript injections that are designed to redirect users to sketchy sites. "Site visitors get injected content that was drive-by malware like fake Cloudflare verification," Sucuri researcher Puja Srivastava said in an analysis published last week. The website security company said it began an investigation after one of its customer's WordPress sites served suspicious third-party JavaScript to site visitors, ultimately finding that the attackers introduced malicious modifications to a theme-related file ("functions.php"). The code inserted into "functions.php" incorporates references to Google Ads, likely in an attempt to evade detection. But, in reality, it functions as a remote loader by sending an HTTP POST request to the domain "brazilc[.]com," which, in turn, responds with a dynamic payload that includes two component...
New EDDIESTEALER Malware Bypasses Chrome's App-Bound Encryption to Steal Browser Data

New EDDIESTEALER Malware Bypasses Chrome's App-Bound Encryption to Steal Browser Data

May 30, 2025 Browser Security / Malware
A new malware campaign is distributing a novel Rust-based information stealer dubbed EDDIESTEALER using the popular ClickFix social engineering tactic initiated via fake CAPTCHA verification pages. "This campaign leverages deceptive CAPTCHA verification pages that trick users into executing a malicious PowerShell script, which ultimately deploys the infostealer, harvesting sensitive data such as credentials, browser information, and cryptocurrency wallet details," Elastic Security Labs researcher Jia Yu Chan said in an analysis. The attack chains begin with threat actors compromising legitimate websites with malicious JavaScript payloads that serve bogus CAPTCHA check pages, which prompt site visitors to "prove you are not [a] robot" by following a three-step process, a prevalent tactic called ClickFix . This involves instructing the potential victim to open the Windows Run dialog prompt, paste an already copied command into the "verification window"...
Fileless Remcos RAT Delivered via LNK Files and MSHTA in PowerShell-Based Attacks

Fileless Remcos RAT Delivered via LNK Files and MSHTA in PowerShell-Based Attacks

May 16, 2025 Malware / Cyber Attack
Cybersecurity researchers have shed light on a new malware campaign that makes use of a PowerShell-based shellcode loader to deploy a remote access trojan called Remcos RAT. "Threat actors delivered malicious LNK files embedded within ZIP archives, often disguised as Office documents," Qualys security researcher Akshay Thorve said in a technical report. "The attack chain leverages mshta.exe for proxy execution during the initial stage." The latest wave of attacks, as detailed by Qualys, employs tax-related lures to entice users into opening a malicious ZIP archive containing a Windows shortcut (LNK) file, which, in turn, makes use of mshta.exe, a legitimate Microsoft tool used to run HTML Applications (HTA). The binary is used to execute an obfuscated HTA file named "xlab22.hta" hosted on a remote server, which incorporates Visual Basic Script code to download a PowerShell script, a decoy PDF, and another HTA file similar to xlab22.hta called "3...
