More SIM Cards Vulnerable to Simjacker Attack Than Previously Disclosed

Sep 27, 2019
Remember the Simjacker vulnerability? Earlier this month, we reported about a critical unpatched weakness in a wide range of SIM cards, which an unnamed surveillance company has actively been exploiting in the wild to remotely compromise targeted mobile phones just by sending a specially crafted SMS to their phone numbers. If you can recall, the Simjacker vulnerability resides in a dynamic SIM toolkit, called the S@T Browser , which comes installed on a variety of SIM cards, including eSIM, provided by mobile operators in at least 30 countries. Now, it turns out that the S@T Browser is not the only dynamic SIM toolkit that contains the Simjacker issue which can be exploited remotely from any part of the world without any authorization—regardless of which handsets or mobile operating systems victims are using. WIB SIM ToolKit Also Leads To SimJacker Attacks Following the Simjacker revelation, Lakatos, a researcher at Ginno Security Lab, reached out to The Hacker News earli...
China's Cyber Hackers Target Western Firms !

China's Cyber Hackers Target Western Firms !

Apr 18, 2011
China 's Cyber Hackers Target Western Firms ! Sky News has learnt of the growing threat Western governments and corporations are under from hackers based in China. Cyber crime costs the UK tens of billions of pounds every year. The attacks cannot be traced but I have gained access to some of the country's growing number of hackers to discover just how big a risk they pose: The man I meet is 21, he has no technical training and has moved to Beijing from a small town in southern China. But within minutes of our meeting, he's shown me how he can hack into my email account. A few more clicks of his mouse, and he's stolen my credit card details as I make an online purchase. He says he's a "cyber security expert" - not a hacker - but we can't use his name and he refuses to show his face. I ask him whether he could successfully hack into more carefully guarded computer systems: those of government officials and top companies in the West. "Even...

Tesla Cars Can Be Hacked to Locate and Unlock Remotely

Mar 31, 2014
Smart Phones, Smart TVs, Smart Refrigerators, even Smart Cars! When it comes to Smart devices, we simply provide them the master control of various tasks to make our life easy and more comfortable, unaware about its worst impact. At the starting of last month we reported that by using a $20 toolkit called CAN Hacking Tool (CHT) , hackers can hack your Smart Cars, giving entire control of your car to an attacker from windows and headlights to its steering and brakes. Now a new research carried out on the  Tesla Smart car  has proved that the hackers are able to remotely locate or unlock the Tesla Motors Inc. electric vehicles, just by cracking a six-character password using traditional hacking techniques. At the Black Hat Asia security conference in Singapore on Friday, Nitesh Dhanjani , a corporate security consultant and Tesla owner, said a recent study conducted by him on the Tesla Model S sedan pointed out several design flaws in its security system, and th...

New SIM Card Flaw Lets Hackers Hijack Any Phone Just By Sending SMS

New SIM Card Flaw Lets Hackers Hijack Any Phone Just By Sending SMS

Sep 12, 2019
Cybersecurity researchers today revealed the existence of a new and previously undetected critical vulnerability in SIM cards that could allow remote attackers to compromise targeted mobile phones and spy on victims just by sending an SMS. Dubbed " SimJacker ," the vulnerability resides in a particular piece of software, called the S@T Browser (a dynamic SIM toolkit), embedded on most SIM cards that is widely being used by mobile operators in at least 30 countries and can be exploited regardless of which handsets victims are using. What's worrisome? A specific private company that works with governments is actively exploiting the SimJacker vulnerability from at least the last two years to conduct targeted surveillance on mobile phone users across several countries. S@T Browser , short for SIMalliance Toolbox Browser, is an application that comes installed on a variety of SIM cards, including eSIM, as part of SIM Tool Kit (STK) and has been designed to let mobile...

Privatoria — Protect Your Privacy Online with Fast and Encrypted VPN Service

Nov 04, 2016
Today, most of you surf the web unaware of the fact that websites collect your data and track your locations and makes millions by sharing your search histories, location data, and buying habits with advertisers and marketers. And if this isn't enough, there are hackers and cyber criminals out there who have the ability to easily steal your sensitive and personal data from the ill-equipped websites. In short, the bitter truth is that you have no or very little online privacy. To resolve this issue, you need a Virtual Private Network (VPN). If you are worried about online Privacy and have not thought about using a VPN, it might be time to get one. But, the question is: What are the best anonymous VPN services? Unfortunately, not all VPNs are as anonymous as they claim to be. Some VPN services keep extensive logs of their users' browsing activities, including IP-addresses for weeks, which nullify the point of using a VPN for privacy. Want Privacy While You Surf...
How to Plan and Prepare for Penetration Testing

How to Plan and Prepare for Penetration Testing

Sep 27, 2024 Penetration Testing / Threat Detection
As security technology and threat awareness among organizations improves so do the adversaries who are adopting and relying on new techniques to maximize speed and impact while evading detection. Ransomware and malware continue to be the method of choice by big game hunting (BGH) cyber criminals, and the increased use of hands-on or "interactive intrusion" techniques is especially alarming. Unlike malware attacks that rely on automated malicious tools and scripts, human-driven intrusions use the creativity and problem-solving abilities of attackers. These individuals can imitate normal user or administrative behaviors, making it challenging to distinguish between legitimate activities and cyber-attacks. The goal of most security practitioners today is to manage risk at scale. Gaining visibility, reducing the noise, and securing the attack surface across the enterprise requires the right people, processes, and security solutions. With the use of penetration testing services , organ...
Hackers Can Silently Control Siri, Alexa & Other Voice Assistants Using Ultrasound

Hackers Can Silently Control Siri, Alexa & Other Voice Assistants Using Ultrasound

Sep 07, 2017
What if your smartphone starts making calls, sending text messages, and browsing malicious websites on the Internet itself without even asking you? This is no imaginations, as hackers can make this possible using your smartphone's personal assistant like Siri or Google Now. A team of security researchers from China's Zhejiang University have discovered a clever way of activating your voice recognition systems without speaking a word by exploiting a security vulnerability that is apparently common across all major voice assistants. DolphinAttack (Demo): How It Works Dubbed DolphinAttack , the attack technique works by feeding the AI assistants commands in ultrasonic frequencies, which are too high for humans to hear but are perfectly audible to the microphones on your smart devices. With this technique, cyber criminals can "silently" whisper commands into your smartphones to hijack Siri and Alexa, and could force them to open malicious websites and even ...

Tesla Model S Hack Could Let Thieves Clone Key Fobs to Steal Cars

Sep 12, 2018
Despite having proper security measures in place to protect the driving systems of its cars against cyber attacks, a team of security researchers discovered a way to remotely hack a Tesla Model S luxury sedans in less than two seconds. Yes, you heard that right. A team of researchers from the Computer Security and Industrial Cryptography (COSIC) group of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the KU Leuven University in Belgium has demonstrated how it break the encryption used in Tesla's Model S wireless key fob. With $600 in radio and computing equipment that wirelessly read signals from a nearby Tesla owner's fob, the team was able to clone the key fob of Tesla's Model S, open the doors and drive away the electric sports car without a trace, according to Wired . "Today it's very easy for us to clone these key fobs in a matter of seconds," Lennert Wouters, one of the KU Leuven researchers, told Wired. "We can completely impersonate the key fob...

Apple iCloud and Activation Lock Hacked; Allows Hackers to Unlock Stolen Devices

May 22, 2014
A Dutch-Moroccan team of hackers calling itself " Team DoulCi " have reportedly claimed to hack a protective feature on Apple 's iCloud system, that could leverage an attacker to remove security measures on lost or stolen iPhone devices. According to a report from Dutch news organization De Telegraaf , the hackers purchased locked iPhone devices for $50 to $150 each and then bypassed Apple's iCloud activation lock through a serious security vulnerability Apple has failed to patch with its most recent updates. The critical vulnerability in the Apple's iCloud allowed them to unlock stolen iPhones in an instant, which could then be sold for a large profit in the Blackmarket. This is the first time when any hacker group has managed to compromise the highly secured Apple's iCloud service. iCloud is a cloud storage and cloud computing service provided by the Apple Inc. to its users since October 2011 with more than 320 million users across the world. The service all...

Chinese Electronics Firm to Recall its Smart Cameras recently used to Take Down Internet

Oct 24, 2016
You might be surprised to know that your security cameras, Internet-connected toasters and refrigerators may have inadvertently participated in the massive cyber attack that broke a large portion of the Internet on Friday. That's due to massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against Dyn, a major domain name system (DNS) provider that many sites and services use as their upstream DNS provider for turning IP addresses into human-readable websites. The result we all know: Twitter, GitHub, Amazon, Netflix, Pinterest, Etsy, Reddit, PayPal, and AirBnb, were among hundreds of sites and services that were rendered inaccessible to Millions of people worldwide for several hours. Why and How the Deadliest DDoS Attack Happened It was reported that the Mirai bots were used in the massive DDoS attacks against DynDNS, but they "were separate and distinct" bots from those used to execute record-breaking DDoS attack against French Internet service and hosting...
Are Your APIs Leaking Sensitive Data?

Are Your APIs Leaking Sensitive Data?

May 22, 2023 API Security / Cybersecurity
It's no secret that data leaks have become a major concern for both citizens and institutions across the globe. They can cause serious damage to an organization's reputation, induce considerable financial losses, and even have serious legal repercussions. From the infamous Cambridge Analytica scandal to the Equifax data breach, there have been some pretty high-profile leaks resulting in massive consequences for the world's biggest brands. Breaches can also have a huge impact on individuals as well – ultimately leading to the loss of personal information, such as passwords or credit card details, which could be used by criminals for malicious purposes. Most notably victims are left vulnerable to identity theft or financial fraud.  When you think about the sheer volume of these leaks, one would imagine that the world would stop and focus on the attack vector(s) being exploited. The unfortunate reality is the world didn't stop. To make things more interesting, the most ...
