But after analyzing the disclosed exploits, Microsoft security team says most of the windows vulnerabilities exploited by these hacking tools, including EternalBlue, EternalChampion, EternalSynergy, EternalRomance and others, are already patched in the last month's Patch Tuesday update. Latest Hacking Tools Leak Indicates NSA Was Targeting SWIFT Banking Network

Apr 14, 2017
Update: Most of the exploits made publicly available (mentioned in this article) by the Shadow Brokers group are already patched by Microsoft in the last month's Patch Tuesday update. So, it is always recommended that you keep your systems up-to-date in order to prevent you from being hacked. The Shadow Brokers – a hackers group that claimed to have stolen a bunch of hacking tools from the NSA – released today more alleged hacking tools and exploits that target earlier versions of Windows operating system, along with evidence that the Intelligence agency also targeted the SWIFT banking system of several banks around the world. Last week, the hacking group released the password for an encrypted cache of Unix exploits , including a remote root zero-day exploit for Solaris OS, and the TOAST framework the group put on auction last summer. The hacking tools belonged to " Equation Group " – an elite cyber attack unit linked to the National Security Agency (NSA). ...

Want to Grow Vulnerability Management into Exposure Management? Start Here!

Dec 05, 2024Attack Surface / Exposure Management
Vulnerability Management (VM) has long been a cornerstone of organizational cybersecurity. Nearly as old as the discipline of cybersecurity itself, it aims to help organizations identify and address potential security issues before they become serious problems. Yet, in recent years, the limitations of this approach have become increasingly evident.  At its core, Vulnerability Management processes remain essential for identifying and addressing weaknesses. But as time marches on and attack avenues evolve, this approach is beginning to show its age. In a recent report, How to Grow Vulnerability Management into Exposure Management (Gartner, How to Grow Vulnerability Management Into Exposure Management, 8 November 2024, Mitchell Schneider Et Al.), we believe Gartner® addresses this point precisely and demonstrates how organizations can – and must – shift from a vulnerability-centric strategy to a broader Exposure Management (EM) framework. We feel it's more than a worthwhile read an...

SWIFT Hack: Bangladesh Bank Recovers $15 Million from a Philippines Casino

Nov 10, 2016
Part of the $81 Million stolen from Bangladesh bank's New York Federal Reserve account earlier this year in the wake of the major malware attack on the SWIFT interbank transfer network has been tracked down to a casino in the Philippines. SWIFT, or Society for Worldwide Interbank Telecommunication, is a global financial messaging system that thousands of banks and organizations around the world use to transfer billions of dollars every day. In February, hackers dropped a piece of malware on a SWIFT terminal employed by Bangladesh's central bank, obtained credentials needed for payment transfers from the New York Federal Reserve Bank, and then transferred large amount to fraudulent accounts based in the Philippines and Sri Lanka. In March, the investigation revealed that the stolen money was then sold to a black market foreign exchange broker and later transferred to at least 3 local casinos in the Philippines. In September, Philippine court ordered the return of $1...

The ISACA branch in Ukraine, who has been hired by the targeted bank to investigate the heist, disclosed that some unknown hackers were able to compromise the bank's security in similar way they hacked Bangladesh central bank and stole $81m (£56m), the Kyiv Post reports. Philippines Bank hit by SWIFT Hacking Group allegedly linked to North Korea

May 27, 2016
SWIFT Bank Hackers have attacked another bank in the Philippines using the same modus operandi as that in the $81 Million Bangladesh Bank heist . Security researchers at Symantec have found evidence that malware used by the hacking group shares code similarities with the malware families used in targeted attacks against South Korean and US government, finance, and media organizations in 2009. These historic attacks were attributed to the North Korean hacking group known as Lazarus , who hacked Sony Pictures in 2014. Also Read:   How Hackers Stole $80 Million from Bangladesh Bank . " At first, it was unclear what the motivation behind these attacks were, however, code sharing between Trojan.Banswift (used in the Bangladesh attack used to manipulate SWIFT transactions) and early variants of Backdoor.Contopee provided a connection, " Symantec blog post says. In past few months, some unknown hackers have been targeting banks across the world by gaining access to SWIFT, the wor...

A third case involving SWIFT has emerged in which cyber criminals have stolen about $12 million from an Ecuadorian bank that contained numerous similarities of later attacks against Bangladesh's central bank that lost $81 Million in the cyber heist . The attack on Banco del Austro (BDA) in Ecuador occurred in January 2015 and, revealed via a lawsuit filed by BDA against Wells Fargo, a San Francisco-based bank on Jan. 28, Reuters reported.
