Anonymous Hackers Targeting Russian government websites for Putin Inauguration
May 05, 2012
Anonymous Hackers Targeting Russian government websites for Putin Inauguration Anonymous hackers to launch cyber attacks on the websites of the Russian state agencies to support the opposition. In a YouTube video , Hackers said that the Russian government website will be subjected to DDOS attack on May 6, and on May 7 the same will happen with the prime minister's site. " Join us! All it takes is a few simple actions to bring this rotten and corrupt system to its logical end. " The hackers then posted instructions for everyone who would like to participate in attacks. Putin convincingly won a six-year presidential term in March despite a wave of protests following a December parliamentary poll the opposition said was tarnished by large-scale voting fraud in support of his party. It said it would launch attacks on the Russian government website Government.ru at 1200 GMT on May 6 and on the prime minister's website Premier.gov.ru on May 7 at 0900 GMT. Anonymous demanded that

UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency's website taken offline after DDoS attack
May 03, 2012
UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency 's website taken offline after DDoS attack The Serious Organised Crime Agency's website was temporarily shut down today after a cyber attack. It was the victim of a scam known as distributed denial of service (DDOS) whereby an internet address is flooded with bogus traffic, effectively making it unreachable. It is the second time in a year that the website has fallen victim to hackers." We elected to take the website offline temporarily at about 10:00 pm (2100 GMT) last night ," a SOCA spokesman said. SOCA was the first target of the AntiSec campaign launched back in June by Anonymous and LulzSec. Soon after, 19-year-old Ryan Cleary was arrested and charged with allegedly playing a role in the DDoS attack that took down the SOCA Web site. Since then, the site was seemingly operating as expected. A Twitter news feed that claims links to the Anonymous hacking collective publicised the DDoS on Thursday, but did not claim respon

Navigating the Threat Landscape: Understanding Exposure Management, Pentesting, Red Teaming and RBVM

Apr 29, 2024Exposure Management / Attack Surface
It comes as no surprise that today's cyber threats are orders of magnitude more complex than those of the past. And the ever-evolving tactics that attackers use demand the adoption of better, more holistic and consolidated ways to meet this non-stop challenge. Security teams constantly look for ways to reduce risk while improving security posture, but many approaches offer piecemeal solutions – zeroing in on one particular element of the evolving threat landscape challenge – missing the forest for the trees.  In the last few years, Exposure Management has become known as a comprehensive way of reigning in the chaos, giving organizations a true fighting chance to reduce risk and improve posture. In this article I'll cover what Exposure Management is, how it stacks up against some alternative approaches and why building an Exposure Management program should be on  your 2024 to-do list. What is Exposure Management?  Exposure Management is the systematic identification, evaluation,

" The District government has detected an attempted intrusion into it's technology infrastructure system, " the D.C. Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said in an email to specified recipients around noon. " Customers may experience intermittent difficulties in accessing the District's web site as we attempt to address the issue. We are aggressively working to resolve this matter. " In January the group launched a similar attack against the UFC for its support of the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act that was debated by Congress earlier this year. DDoS attacks have been launched by a variety of groups such as Anonymous and LulzSec against federal government websites and servers, including the FBI and CIA.

MI6, CIA and Department of Justice Tango Down !
Apr 17, 2012
MI6, CIA and Department of Justice Tango Down ! Hacker group Anonymous claimed it took down the CIA website for the second time in two months following a new DDoS attack on the U.S. secret service which lasted 45 minutes.  Anonymous is reportedly on a DDoS rampage today, downing the CIA, Department of Justice, and two Mi6 websites. Members of the group claimed responsibility throughout Facebook and Twitter. Brazilian hacktivist Havittaja reportedly launched the initial offensive on the DoJ and CIA for "lulz" while other members jumped on board a short time later. The technique also known as a DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack, is a concentrated effort by multiple individuals to make a network busy to its intended users. The end result is server overload. Anonymous makes a freeware tool available to its members to carry out these attacks, which it calls the Low Orbit Ion Cannon. The collective targeted the department of justice in January as part of Operation Megaupload

Botnets, DDoS attacks as weapon against financial sector

Botnets, DDoS attacks as weapon against financial sector
Apr 13, 2012
Botnets, DDoS attacks as weapon against financial sector DDOS attacks against the financial sector almost tripled during the first quarter of this year, according to DDoS mitigation specialist Prolexic. The firm also reported a 3,000 per cent quarter-on-quarter increase in malicious packet traffic targeted at the financial services sector, compared with the final quarter of 2011. China leads the way as the country from where DDoS attacks originate, followed by the U.S., Russia, then India. Prolexic says " more than 10 of the worlds largest banks due to market capitalization ," and " an almost threefold increase in the number of attacks against its financial services ". A distributed denial-of-service attack is one in which several compromised systems attack a single target, causing denial of service for legitimate users. The flood of incoming messages to the target system essentially forces it to shut down, thereby denying service. The average attack bandwidth

Kelihos Botnet with 110,000 PCs take down finally
Mar 29, 2012
Kelihos Botnet with 110,000 PCs take down finally Botnets are particularly insidious, using thousands of virus-infected computers which their owners are unaware are being used for sending out spam, launching denial-of-service attacks and stealing data. But taking down a botnet poses challenges. The main problem is that legitimate security companies can't use the same type of weapons as criminals. A group of malware experts from security companies Kaspersky Lab, CrowdStrike, Dell SecureWorks and the Honeynet Project, have worked together to disable the second version of the Kelihos botnet, which is significantly bigger than the one shut down by Microsoft and its partners. Kelihos is used to send spam, carry out DDoS attacks, and steal online currency such as bitcoin wallets. It operates as a so-called "peer-to-peer" bot network, which are more difficult to take down than those with a centralized command and control servers (C&C), according to Tillmann Werner, a senior

Vatican Radio hacked by Anonymous Hackers The hacktivist group Anonymous has taken down the Vatican's website for a second time. The attack is part of the organization's recent declaration of war against religion. The personal data of journalists at Vatican radio was leaked online and the Vatican's website hacked for the second time in several days both attacks believed to be the work of the amorphous Internet activist group Anonymous. Unlike the first hack , which appeared to be a typical Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack, this one is more than just taking down the website. Vatican officials declined to discuss the breach while the attack was still under way. " We regret having to announce that your systems are less secure than what you would like to believe, because, while the hype was directed toward the darkening of vatican.va, we took the liberty to implement a small incursion into your systems, " the statement reads. Anonymous justified its attack by

Such a barrage aimed at DNS servers can make it impossible to connect users to a website when they type the address. Where as facebook said that its service was unavailable in some European countries this morning because of technical problems. Third parties suggested a problem with Facebook's European DNS servers may have been at the root. These machines connect the address "Facebook.com" with the actual content of the website, and during the outage attempts to contact to them as normal received no response. DownRightNow, which monitors major web services, showed Facebook having suffered ongoing intermittent service until mid-afternoon.CERT.Be, a Belgian government agency, claimed that the outage was due to a DDoS hacker attack, but this has not been confirmed. " The attack, though confined to a small portion of LIME's Internet customer base, inconvenienced the affected customers and gave the appearance of a widescale service-impacting problem on the company's network, " noted a statement from the company. LIME has announced plans to take legal action against the person responsible for an attack on its network, which resulted in internet service disruptions to hundreds of customers over the last week. Managing Director, Alex McDonald says engineers implemented some changes in the broadband network to isolate the IP addr

THOR : Another P2P Botnet in development with extra stealth features
Mar 06, 2012
THOR : Another P2P Botnet in development with extra stealth features The research community is now focusing on the integration of peer-to-peer (P2P) concepts as incremental improvements to distributed malicious software networks (now generically referred to as botnets). Because "botnets" can be used for illicit financial gain, they have become quite popular in recent Internet attacks. A " botnet " is a network of computers that are compromised and controlled by an attacker. Each computer is infected witha malicious program called a "bot", which actively communicates with other bots in the botnet or with several "botcontrollers" to receive commands from the botnet owner. Attackers maintain complete control of their botnets, andcan conduct Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, email spamming, keylogging, abusing online advertisements, spreading new malware, etc. However, the first botnets that use peer-to-peer (P2P) networks for remote control of the compromised machines appeare
