Classified U.S. Defense Network Outage Hits Air Force’s Secret Drone Operations

Classified U.S. Defense Network Outage Hits Air Force's Secret Drone Operations

Oct 13, 2016
U.S. drones are again in news for killing innocent people. The Air Force is investigating the connection between the failure of its classified network, dubbed SIPRNet, at Creech Air Force Base and a series of high-profile airstrikes that went terribly wrong in September this year. Creech Air Force Base is a secret facility outside Las Vegas, where military and Air Force pilots sitting in dark and air-conditioned rooms, 7100 miles from Syria and Afghanistan, remotely control their " targeted killing " drone campaign in a video-game-style warfare. From this ground zero, Air Force pilots fire missiles just by triggering a joystick on a targeted areas half a world away, as well as operate drones for surveillance and intelligence gathering. Drone operation facility at Creech Air Force Base -- a key base for worldwide drone and targeted killing operations -- has been assigned as ' Special Access Programs ', to access SIPRnet. What is SIPRnet? SIPRNet, or Secret Int...

One of the victims based in Saudi Arabia, whose Twitter account was compromised by the ISIS extremists, said, "I am horrified at how they got hold of my details." The extremists not only hacked thousands of Twitter accounts, but they also posted hacked personal information, including phone numbers and passwords, of the heads of: The...

Want to Grow Vulnerability Management into Exposure Management? Start Here!

Dec 05, 2024Attack Surface / Exposure Management
Vulnerability Management (VM) has long been a cornerstone of organizational cybersecurity. Nearly as old as the discipline of cybersecurity itself, it aims to help organizations identify and address potential security issues before they become serious problems. Yet, in recent years, the limitations of this approach have become increasingly evident.  At its core, Vulnerability Management processes remain essential for identifying and addressing weaknesses. But as time marches on and attack avenues evolve, this approach is beginning to show its age. In a recent report, How to Grow Vulnerability Management into Exposure Management (Gartner, How to Grow Vulnerability Management Into Exposure Management, 8 November 2024, Mitchell Schneider Et Al.), we believe Gartner® addresses this point precisely and demonstrates how organizations can – and must – shift from a vulnerability-centric strategy to a broader Exposure Management (EM) framework. We feel it's more than a worthwhile read an...

Weaponized Drones For Police Now Legal In North Dakota

Aug 31, 2015
Drones also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have contributed enormously by acting as an interface for conducting surveillance operations, or delivering products, or attacking a war site to name a few. We have seen Drones like ' Snoopy ' that are capable to intercept data from your Smartphones, even without authentication or interaction, using spoofed wireless networks. And now the reports depict... The first U.S. state to get permission for flying drones with "less lethal weapons" is North Dakota. It now has the powers to grant permissions to the local police departments to attach weapons like: rubber bullets, pepper spray, tear gas, sound cannons, and tasers. Earlier, the law's author Rick Becker had restricted the police to get a warrant for conducting drone surveillance. However, the things didn't turn up his way as, an officer from the North Dakota Peace Officers Association Bruce Burkett , controlled things his way by get...

Snoopy Drone Can Hack Your Smartphones

Mar 25, 2014
The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVS) called Drones is rapidly transforming the way we go to war. Drones were once used for land surveillance, Delivering Pizza's, then equipped with bombs that  changed the way nations conduct war and  now these hovering drones are ready to hack your Smartphones. London-based Sensepoint security researchers have developed a drone called ' Snoopy ' that can intercept data from your Smartphones using spoofed wireless networks, CNN Money reported. The Drone will search for WiFi enabled devices and then using its built-in technology, it will see what networks the phones have accessed in the past and pretends to be one of those old network connections. Spoofing WiFi networks that device has already accessed allows Snoopy Drone to connect with targeted Smartphone without authentication or interaction. In technical terms, The Drone will use ' Wireless Evil Twin Attack ' to hack Smartphones. Once connected...

Chinese malware campaign 'Beebus' target US defense industries

Feb 06, 2013
A Chinese malware campaign called ' Beebus ' specifically targeting the aerospace and defense industries has been uncovered by FireEye security researchers. Beebus is designed to steal information, and begins its infiltration, as so many attacks do, with spear-phishing emails. Operation Beebus very related to Operation Shady RAT and was first detected in April 2011. The attacks carried out by  spear phishing attack and drive-by downloads as a means of infecting end users. malicious Whitepapers or PDFs were mailed to targets and by using known flaws, malware was able install Trojan backdoors on vulnerable systems. The malware communicates with a remote command and control (CnC) server. FireEye discovered the attacks on some of its customers in the aerospace and defence last March and the Vulnerability in the Windows OS known as DLL search order hijacking was used to drops a DLL called ntshrui.DLL in the C:\Windows directory.  It has modules ...
