Iran-Linked Hackers Mapped Ship AIS Data Days Before Real-World Missile Strike Attempt

Iran-Linked Hackers Mapped Ship AIS Data Days Before Real-World Missile Strike Attempt

Nov 20, 2025 Cyber Warfare / Threat Intelligence
Threat actors with ties to Iran engaged in cyber warfare as part of efforts to facilitate and enhance physical, real-world attacks, a trend that Amazon has called cyber-enabled kinetic targeting. The development is a sign that the lines between state-sponsored cyber attacks and kinetic warfare are increasingly blurring, necessitating the need for a new category of warfare, the tech giant's threat intelligence team said in a report shared with The Hacker News. While traditional cybersecurity frameworks have treated digital and physical threats as separate domains, CJ Moses, CISO of Amazon Integrated Security, said these delineations are artificial and that nation-state threat actors are engaging in cyber reconnaissance activity to enable kinetic targeting. "These aren't just cyber attacks that happen to cause physical damage; they are coordinated campaigns where digital operations are specifically designed to support physical military objectives," Moses added. As an...

SideWinder APT Targets Maritime, Nuclear, and IT Sectors Across Asia, Middle East, and Africa

Mar 11, 2025 Cyber Espionage / Maritime Security
Maritime and logistics companies in South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa have become the target of an advanced persistent threat (APT) group dubbed SideWinder. The attacks, observed by Kaspersky in 2024, spread across Bangladesh, Cambodia, Djibouti, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam. Other targets of interest include nuclear power plants and nuclear energy infrastructure in South Asia and Africa, as well as telecommunication, consulting, IT service companies, real estate agencies, and hotels. In what appears to be a wider expansion of its victimology footprint, SideWinder has also targeted diplomatic entities in Afghanistan, Algeria, Bulgaria, China, India, the Maldives, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Uganda. The targeting of India is significant as the threat actor was previously suspected to be of Indian origin. "It is worth noting that SideWinder constantly works to improve its toolsets, stay ahead of security software detections, extend per...
Sailing the Seven Seas Securely from Port to Port – OT Access Security for Ships and Cranes

Sailing the Seven Seas Securely from Port to Port – OT Access Security for Ships and Cranes

Oct 28, 2024 Operational Technology / Cybersecurity
Operational Technology (OT) security has affected marine vessel and port operators, since both ships and industrial cranes are being digitalized and automated at a rapid pace, ushering in new types of security challenges. Ships come to shore every six months on average. Container cranes are mostly automated. Diagnostics, maintenance, upgrade and adjustments to these critical systems are done remotely, often by third-party vendor technicians. This highlights the importance of proper secure remote access management for industrial control systems (ICS).  Learn more in our Buyer's Guide for Secure Remote Access Lifecycle Management .  We at SSH Communications Security (SSH) have been pioneering security solutions that bridge the gap between IT and OT in privileged access management . Let's investigate how we helped two customers solve their critical access control needs with us. Secure Remote Access Around the Globe to 1000s of Ships  In the maritime industry, ensurin...
