Cybersecurity researchers have flagged a fresh set of packages that have been compromised by bad actors to deliver a self-propagating worm that spreads through stolen developer npm tokens. The supply chain worm has been detected by both Socket and StepSecurity , with the companies tracking the activity under the name CanisterSprawl owing to the use of an ICP canister to exfiltrate the stolen data, in a tactic reminiscent of TeamPCP's CanisterWorm to make the infrastructure resilient to takedowns. Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed a critical vulnerability in the Open VSX Registry ("open-vsx[.]org") that, if successfully exploited, could have enabled attackers to take control of the entire Visual Studio Code extensions marketplace, posing a severe supply chain risk. "This vulnerability provides attackers full control over the entire extensions marketplace, and in turn, full control over millions of developer machines," Koi Security researcher Oren Yomtov said . "By exploiting a CI issue a malicious actor could publish malicious updates to every extension on Open VSX." Threat actors have long leveraged typosquatting as a means to trick unsuspecting users into visiting malicious websites or downloading booby-trapped software and packages. These attacks typically involve registering domains or packages with names slightly altered from their legitimate counterparts (e.g., goog1e.com vs. google.com). Adversaries targeting open-source repositories across platforms have relied on developers making typing errors to initiate software supply chain attacks through PyPI, npm, Maven Central, NuGet, RubyGems, and Crate.
