Over 600 Laravel Apps Exposed to Remote Code Execution Due to Leaked APP_KEYs on GitHub

Over 600 Laravel Apps Exposed to Remote Code Execution Due to Leaked APP_KEYs on GitHub

Jul 12, 2025 Application Security / DevOps
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a serious security issue that allows leaked Laravel APP_KEYs to be weaponized to gain remote code execution capabilities on hundreds of applications. "Laravel's APP_KEY, essential for encrypting sensitive data, is often leaked publicly (e.g., on GitHub)," GitGuardian said . "If attackers get access to this key, they can exploit a deserialization flaw to execute arbitrary code on the server – putting data and infrastructure at risk." The company, in collaboration with Synacktiv, said it was able to extract more than 260,000 APP_KEYs from GitHub from 2018 to May 30, 2025, identifying over 600 vulnerable Laravel applications in the process. GitGuardian said it observed over 10,000 unique APP_KEYs across GitHub, of which 400 APP_KEYs were validated as functional. APP_KEY is a random 32-byte encryption key that's generated during the installation of Laravel. Stored in the .env file of the application, it's used ...
Hackers Exploit Misconfigured Docker APIs to Mine Cryptocurrency via Tor Network

Hackers Exploit Misconfigured Docker APIs to Mine Cryptocurrency via Tor Network

Jun 24, 2025 Cloud Security / Cryptojacking
Misconfigured Docker instances are the target of a campaign that employs the Tor anonymity network to stealthily mine cryptocurrency in susceptible environments. "Attackers are exploiting misconfigured Docker APIs to gain access to containerized environments, then using Tor to mask their activities while deploying crypto miners," Trend Micro researchers Sunil Bharti and Shubham Singh said in an analysis published last week. In using Tor, the idea is to anonymize their origins during the installation of the miner on compromised systems. The attacks, per the cybersecurity company, commence with a request from the IP address 198.199.72[.]27 to obtain a list of all containers on the machine. If no containers are present, the attacker proceeds to create a new one based on the "alpine" Docker image and mounts the "/hostroot" directory – i.e., the root directory ("/") of the physical or virtual host machine – as a volume inside it. This behavior p...
Cryptojacking Campaign Exploits DevOps APIs Using Off-the-Shelf Tools from GitHub

Cryptojacking Campaign Exploits DevOps APIs Using Off-the-Shelf Tools from GitHub

Jun 02, 2025 Cryptojacking / Cloud Security
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new cryptojacking campaign that's targeting publicly accessible DevOps web servers such as those associated with Docker, Gitea, and HashiCorp Consul and Nomad to illicitly mine cryptocurrencies. Cloud security firm Wiz, which is tracking the activity under the name JINX-0132 , said the attackers are exploiting a wide range of known misconfigurations and vulnerabilities to deliver the miner payload. "Notably, this campaign marks what we believe to be the first publicly documented instance of Nomad misconfigurations being exploited as an attack vector in the wild," researchers Gili Tikochinski, Danielle Aminov, and Merav Bar said in a report shared with The Hacker News. What sets these attacks further stand out is that the bad actors download the necessary tools directly from GitHub repositories rather than using their own infrastructure for staging purposes. The use of off-the-shelf tools is seen as a deliberate attempt to c...

BaitTrap: Over 17,000 Fake News Websites Caught Fueling Investment Fraud Globally

Jul 08, 2025Financial Scams / Online Security
A newly released report by cybersecurity firm CTM360 reveals a large-scale scam operation utilizing fake news websites—known as Baiting News Sites (BNS)—to deceive users into online investment fraud across 50 countries. These BNS pages are made to look like real news outlets: CNN, BBC, CNBC, or regional media. They publish fake stories that feature public figures, central banks, or financial brands, all claiming to back new ways to earn passive income. The goal? Build trust quickly and steer readers toward professional-looking scam platforms like Trap10, Solara Vynex, or Eclipse Earn. Scammers use sponsored ads on Google, Meta, and blog networks to push traffic to these sites. Ads often carry clickbait headlines—"You won't believe what a prominent public figure just revealed"—paired with official photos or national flags to make them feel legit. Clicking the ad directs users to a fake article, which then redirects them to a fraudulent trading platform. Many of these scams follow a...

It's worth noting that the identified shortcomings remain unpatched despite responsible disclosure on February 13, 2025, prompting a public release of the issues following the end of the 90-day deadline. "These vulnerabilities, when chained together, could allow an attacker to fully compromise both the application and the underlying host system," ProjectDiscovery researchers Harsh Jaiswal, Rahul Maini, and Parth Malhotra said in a report shared with The Hacker News. The security defects are listed below - CVE-2025-34025 (CVSS score: 8.6) - A privilege escalation and Docker container escape vulnerability that's caused by unsafe default mounting of host binary paths and could be exploited to gain code execution on the underlying host m...
Docker Malware Exploits Teneo Web3 Node to Earn Crypto via Fake Heartbeat Signals

Docker Malware Exploits Teneo Web3 Node to Earn Crypto via Fake Heartbeat Signals

Apr 22, 2025 IoT Security / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have detailed a malware campaign that's targeting Docker environments with a previously undocumented technique to mine cryptocurrency. The activity cluster, per Darktrace and Cado Security , represents a shift from other cryptojacking campaigns that directly deploy miners like XMRig to illicitly profit off the compute resources. This involves deploying a malware strain that connects to a nascent Web3 service called Teneo, a decentralized physical infrastructure network (DePIN) that allows users to monetize public social media data by running a Community Node in exchange for rewards called Teneo Points , which can be converted into $TENEO Tokens. The node essentially functions as a distributed social media scraper to extract posts from Facebook, X, Reddit, and TikTok. An analysis of artifacts gathered from Darktrace's honeypots has revealed that the attack starts with a request to launch a container image " kazutod/tene:ten " from the ...

Experts Uncover New XorDDoS Controller, Infrastructure as Malware Expands to Docker, Linux, IoT

Apr 18, 2025 IoT Security / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers are warning of continued risks posed by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) malware known as XorDDoS , with 71.3 percent of the attacks between November 2023 and February 2025 targeting the United States. "From 2020 to 2023, the XorDDoS trojan has increased significantly in prevalence," Cisco Talos researcher Joey Chen said in a Thursday analysis.  "This trend is not only due to the widespread global distribution of the XorDDoS trojan but also an uptick in malicious DNS requests linked to its command-and-control (C2) infrastructure. In addition to targeting commonly exposed Linux machines, the trojan has expanded its reach to Docker servers, converting infected hosts into bots." Nearly 42 percent of the compromised devices are located in the United States, followed by Japan, Canada, Denmark, Italy, Morocco, and China. XorDDoS is a well-known malware that has a track record of striking Linux systems for over a decade. In May 2022...
Incomplete Patch in NVIDIA Toolkit Leaves CVE-2024-0132 Open to Container Escapes

Incomplete Patch in NVIDIA Toolkit Leaves CVE-2024-0132 Open to Container Escapes

Apr 10, 2025 Container Security / Vulnerability
Cybersecurity researchers have detailed a case of an incomplete patch for a previously addressed security flaw impacting the NVIDIA Container Toolkit that, if successfully exploited, could put sensitive data at risk. The original vulnerability CVE-2024-0132 (CVSS score: 9.0) is a Time-of-Check Time-of-Use (TOCTOU) vulnerability that could lead to a container escape attack and allow for unauthorized access to the underlying host. While this flaw was resolved by NVIDIA in September 2024, a new analysis by Trend Micro has revealed the fix to be incomplete and that there also exists a related performance flaw affecting Docker on Linux that could result in a denial-of-service (DoS) condition. "These issues could enable attackers to escape container isolation, access sensitive host resources, and cause severe operational disruptions," Trend Micro researcher Abdelrahman Esmail said in a new report published today. The fact that the TOCTOU vulnerability persists means that a ...

Socks5Systemz Botnet Powers Illegal Proxy Service with 85,000+ Hacked Devices

Dec 09, 2024 Cloud Security / Botnet
A malicious botnet called Socks5Systemz is powering a proxy service called PROXY.AM, according to new findings from Bitsight. "Proxy malware and services enable other types of criminal activity adding uncontrolled layers of anonymity to the threat actors, so they can perform all kinds of malicious activity using chains of victim systems," the company's security research team said in an analysis published last week. The disclosure comes merely weeks after the Black Lotus Labs team at Lumen Technologies revealed that systems compromised by another malware known as Ngioweb are being abused as residential proxy servers for NSOCKS. Socks5Systemz, originally advertised in the cybercrime underground as far back as March 2013, was previously documented by BitSight as being deployed as part of cyber attacks targeting distributing PrivateLoader, SmokeLoader, and Amadey. The primary objective of the malware is to turn compromised systems into proxy exit nodes, which are t...
Critical Docker Engine Flaw Allows Attackers to Bypass Authorization Plugins

Critical Docker Engine Flaw Allows Attackers to Bypass Authorization Plugins

Jul 25, 2024 Container Security / Vulnerability
Docker is warning of a critical flaw impacting certain versions of Docker Engine that could allow an attacker to sidestep authorization plugins (AuthZ) under specific circumstances. Tracked as CVE-2024-41110 , the bypass and privilege escalation vulnerability carries a CVSS score of 10.0, indicating maximum severity. "An attacker could exploit a bypass using an API request with Content-Length set to 0, causing the Docker daemon to forward the request without the body to the AuthZ plugin, which might approve the request incorrectly," the Moby Project maintainers said in an advisory. Docker said the issue is a regression in that the issue was originally discovered in 2018 and addressed in Docker Engine v18.09.1 in January 2019, but never got carried over to subsequent versions (19.03 and later). The issue has been resolved in versions 23.0.14 and 27.1.0 as of July 23, 2024, after the problem was identified in April 2024. The following versions of Docker Engine are impacte...
GitHub Token Leak Exposes Python's Core Repositories to Potential Attacks

GitHub Token Leak Exposes Python's Core Repositories to Potential Attacks

Jul 15, 2024 Supply Chain Attack / Cyber Threat
Cybersecurity researchers said they discovered an accidentally leaked GitHub token that could have granted elevated access to the GitHub repositories of the Python language, Python Package Index (PyPI), and the Python Software Foundation (PSF). JFrog, which found the GitHub Personal Access Token, said the secret was leaked in a public Docker container hosted on Docker Hub. "This case was exceptional because it is difficult to overestimate the potential consequences if it had fallen into the wrong hands – one could supposedly inject malicious code into PyPI packages (imagine replacing all Python packages with malicious ones), and even to the Python language itself," the software supply chain security company said . An attacker could have hypothetically weaponized their admin access to orchestrate a large-scale supply chain attack by poisoning the source code associated with the core of the Python programming language, or the PyPI package manager. JFrog noted that the aut...

New Malware Targets Exposed Docker APIs for Cryptocurrency Mining

Jun 18, 2024 Vulnerability / Cryptojacking
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a new malware campaign that targets publicly exposed Docket API endpoints with the aim of delivering cryptocurrency miners and other payloads. Included among the tools deployed is a remote access tool that's capable of downloading and executing more malicious programs as well as a utility to propagate the malware via SSH, cloud analytics platform Datadog said in a report published last week. Analysis of the campaign has uncovered tactical overlaps with a previous activity dubbed Spinning YARN , which was observed targeting misconfigured Apache Hadoop YARN, Docker, Atlassian Confluence, and Redis services for cryptojacking purposes. The attack commences with the threat actors zeroing in on Docker servers with exposed ports (port number 2375 ) to initiate a series of steps, starting with reconnaissance and privilege escalation before proceeding to the exploitation phase. Payloads are retrieved from adversary-controlled infrastructure by...
Commando Cat Cryptojacking Attacks Target Misconfigured Docker Instances

Commando Cat Cryptojacking Attacks Target Misconfigured Docker Instances

Jun 07, 2024 Cryptojacking / Vulnerability
The threat actor known as Commando Cat has been linked to an ongoing cryptojacking attack campaign that leverages poorly secured Docker instances to deploy cryptocurrency miners for financial gain. "The attackers used the cmd.cat/chattr docker image container that retrieves the payload from their own command-and-control (C&C) infrastructure," Trend Micro researchers Sunil Bharti and Shubham Singh said in a Thursday analysis. Commando Cat, so named for its use of the open-source Commando project to generate a benign container, was first documented earlier this year by Cado Security. The attacks are characterized by the targeting of misconfigured Docker remote API servers to deploy a Docker image named cmd.cat/chattr, which is then used as a basis to instantiate a container and break out of its confines using the chroot command, and gain access to the host operating system. The final step entails retrieving the malicious miner binary using a curl or wget command fr...

Exposed Docker APIs Under Attack in 'Commando Cat' Cryptojacking Campaign

Feb 01, 2024 Cryptojacking / Linux Security
Exposed Docker API endpoints over the internet are under assault from a sophisticated cryptojacking campaign called  Commando Cat . "The campaign deploys a benign container generated using the  Commando project ," Cado security researchers Nate Bill and Matt Muir  said  in a new report published today. "The attacker  escapes this container  and runs multiple payloads on the Docker host." The campaign is believed to have been active since the start of 2024, making it the second such campaign to be discovered in as many months. In mid-January, the cloud security firm also shed light on  another activity cluster  that targets vulnerable Docker hosts to deploy XMRig cryptocurrency miner as well as the 9Hits Viewer software. Commando Cat employs Docker as an initial access vector to deliver a collection of interdependent payloads from an actor-controlled server that is responsible for registering persistence, backdooring the host, exfiltrating clou...
