AI Agents and the Non‑Human Identity Crisis: How to Deploy AI More Securely at Scale

AI Agents and the Non‑Human Identity Crisis: How to Deploy AI More Securely at Scale

May 27, 2025 Artificial Intelligence / Cloud Identity
Artificial intelligence is driving a massive shift in enterprise productivity, from GitHub Copilot's code completions to chatbots that mine internal knowledge bases for instant answers. Each new agent must authenticate to other services, quietly swelling the population of non‑human identities (NHIs) across corporate clouds. That population is already overwhelming the enterprise: many companies now juggle at least 45 machine identities for every human user . Service accounts, CI/CD bots, containers, and AI agents all need secrets, most commonly in the form of API keys, tokens, or certificates, to connect securely to other systems to do their work. GitGuardian's State of Secrets Sprawl 2025 report reveals the cost of this sprawl: over 23.7 million secrets surfaced on public GitHub in 2024 alone. And instead of making the situation better, repositories with Copilot enabled the leak of secrets 40 percent more often .  NHIs Are Not People Unlike human beings logging into systems, ...
Securing CI/CD workflows with Wazuh

Securing CI/CD workflows with Wazuh

May 21, 2025 DevSecOps / Vulnerability Management
Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery/Deployment (CI/CD) refers to practices that automate how code is developed and released to different environments. CI/CD pipelines are fundamental in modern software development, ensuring code is consistently tested, built, and deployed quickly and efficiently. While CI/CD automation accelerates software delivery, it can also introduce security risks. Without proper security measures, CI/CD workflows can be vulnerable to supply chain attacks, insecure dependencies, and insider threats. To mitigate these risks, organizations must integrate measures for continuous monitoring and enforcing security best practices at every pipeline stage. Securing CI/CD workflows preserves the software delivery process's confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Security challenges and risks in CI/CD workflows While CI/CD workflows offer benefits in terms of automation and speed, they also bring unique security challenges that must be addressed to ...
Malicious npm Package Leverages Unicode Steganography, Google Calendar as C2 Dropper

Malicious npm Package Leverages Unicode Steganography, Google Calendar as C2 Dropper

May 15, 2025 Malware / Threat Intelligence
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a malicious package named "os-info-checker-es6" that disguises itself as an operating system information utility to stealthily drop a next-stage payload onto compromised systems. "This campaign employs clever Unicode-based steganography to hide its initial malicious code and utilizes a Google Calendar event short link as a dynamic dropper for its final payload," Veracode said in a r eport shared with The Hacker News. "Os-info-checker-es6" was first published in the npm registry on March 19, 2025, by a user named "kim9123." It has been downloaded 2,001 times as of writing. The same user has also uploaded another npm package called "skip-tot" that lists "os-info-checker-es6" as a dependency. The package has been downloaded 94 times . While the initial five versions exhibited no signs of data exfiltration or malicious behavior, a subsequent iteration uploaded on May 7, 2025, has ...

GitHub Action Compromise Puts CI/CD Secrets at Risk in Over 23,000 Repositories

GitHub Action Compromise Puts CI/CD Secrets at Risk in Over 23,000 Repositories

Mar 17, 2025 Vulnerability / Cloud Security
Cybersecurity researchers are calling attention to an incident in which the popular GitHub Action tj-actions/changed-files was compromised to leak secrets from repositories using the continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) workflow. The incident involved the tj-actions/changed-files GitHub Action, which is used in over 23,000 repositories. It's used to track and retrieve all changed files and directories. The supply chain compromise has been assigned the CVE identifier CVE-2025-30066 (CVSS score: 8.6). The incident is said to have taken place sometime before March 14, 2025. "In this attack, the attackers modified the action's code and retroactively updated multiple version tags to reference the malicious commit," StepSecurity said . "The compromised Action prints CI/CD secrets in GitHub Actions build logs." The net result of this behavior is that should the workflow logs be publicly accessible, they could lead to the unauthorized expo...
Data Governance in DevOps: Ensuring Compliance in the AI Era

Data Governance in DevOps: Ensuring Compliance in the AI Era

Dec 16, 2024 DevOps / Data Governance
With the evolution of modern software development, CI/CD pipeline governance has emerged as a critical factor in maintaining both agility and compliance. As we enter the age of artificial intelligence (AI), the importance of robust pipeline governance has only intensified. With that said, we'll explore the concept of CI/CD pipeline governance and why it's vital, especially as AI becomes increasingly prevalent in our software pipelines. What is CI/CD Pipeline Governance? CI/CD pipeline governance refers to the framework of policies, practices, and controls that oversee the entire software delivery process. It ensures that every step, from the moment the code is committed to when it's deployed in production, adheres to organizational standards, security protocols, and regulatory requirements. In DevOps, this governance acts as a guardrail, allowing teams to move fast without compromising on quality, security, or compliance. It's about striking the delicate balance betwee...
New Critical GitLab Vulnerability Could Allow Arbitrary CI/CD Pipeline Execution

New Critical GitLab Vulnerability Could Allow Arbitrary CI/CD Pipeline Execution

Oct 11, 2024 DevOps / Vulnerability
GitLab has released security updates for Community Edition (CE) and Enterprise Edition (EE) to address eight security flaws, including a critical bug that could allow running Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines on arbitrary branches. Tracked as CVE-2024-9164, the vulnerability carries a CVSS score of 9.6 out of 10. "An issue was discovered in GitLab EE affecting all versions starting from 12.5 prior to 17.2.9, starting from 17.3, prior to 17.3.5, and starting from 17.4 prior to 17.4.2, which allows running pipelines on arbitrary branches," GitLab said in an advisory. Of the remaining seven issues, four are rated high, two are rated medium, and one is rated low in severity - CVE-2024-8970 (CVSS score: 8.2), which allows an attacker to trigger a pipeline as another user under certain circumstances CVE-2024-8977 (CVSS score: 8.2), which allows SSRF attacks in GitLab EE instances with Product Analytics Dashboard configured and enabled CVE-...
GitLab Releases Patch for Critical CI/CD Pipeline Vulnerability and 13 Others

GitLab Releases Patch for Critical CI/CD Pipeline Vulnerability and 13 Others

Jun 28, 2024 Software Security / DevOps
GitLab has released security updates to address 14 security flaws, including one critical vulnerability that could be exploited to run continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines as any user. The weaknesses, which affect GitLab Community Edition (CE) and Enterprise Edition (EE), have been addressed in versions 17.1.1, 17.0.3, and 16.11.5. The most severe of the vulnerabilities is CVE-2024-5655 (CVSS score: 9.6), which could permit a malicious actor to trigger a pipeline as another user under certain circumstances. It impacts the following versions of CE and EE - 17.1 prior to 17.1.1 17.0 prior to 17.0.3, and 15.8 prior to 16.11.5 GitLab said the fix introduces two breaking changes as a result of which GraphQL authentication using CI_JOB_TOKEN is disabled by default and pipelines will no longer run automatically when a merge request is re-targeted after its previous target branch is merged. Some of the other important flaws fixed as part of the lates...
