IronWorm and New Miasma Worm Variant Hit npm in Supply Chain Attacks

IronWorm and New Miasma Worm Variant Hit npm in Supply Chain Attacks

Jun 05, 2026 Software Supply Chain / Malware
Multiple software supply chain attacks have hit the npm ecosystem, with threat actors using both malicious and poisoned versions of over 50 legitimate packages to distribute a Rust-based information stealer and a self-spreading worm, respectively. According to JFrog , the information stealer "scrapes every secret it can find on a developer's machine, hides behind an eBPF kernel rootkit, and answers to its operator over Tor." The stealer also uses the stolen credentials as a propagation mechanism, drawing similarities to the infamous Shai-Hulud worm. The new malware has been codenamed IronWorm by the software supply chain security company. By publishing itself to the npm registry in the form of trojanized packages, the approach results in a self-replicating attack. The malicious activity has been traced back to a compromised npm account named " asteroiddao ," which has been found to publish package versions containing the Rust ELF binary that's exec...

TrapDoor Supply Chain Attack Spreads Credential-Stealing Malware via npm, PyPI, and CratesIO

May 25, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Malware
A new coordinated cross-ecosystem software supply chain attack campaign has targeted npm, PyPI, and Crates.io to distribute credential-stealing malware. The campaign, codenamed TrapDoor , spans more than 34 malicious packages across over 384 versions. The earliest activity was recorded on May 22, 2026, at 8:20 p.m. UTC, with new packages published to the ecosystems in waves from a cluster of accounts in quick succession. "TrapDoor targets developers in crypto, DeFi, Solana, and AI communities," Socket said. "The malicious packages are designed to steal developer secrets, crypto wallets, SSH keys, cloud credentials, browser data, and environment variables." "Several npm packages also deploy a shared payload, trap-core.js, that scans for credentials, validates AWS and GitHub tokens, attempts SSH-based lateral movement, and plants persistence through .cursorrules, CLAUDE.md, Git hooks, shell hooks, systemd, cron, and SSH." It's worth noting tha...

390,000+ WordPress Credentials Stolen via Malicious GitHub Repository Hosting PoC Exploits

Dec 13, 2024 Cyber Attack / Malware
A now-removed GitHub repository that advertised a WordPress tool to publish posts to the online content management system (CMS) is estimated to have enabled the exfiltration of over 390,000 credentials. The malicious activity is part of a broader attack campaign undertaken by a threat actor, dubbed MUT-1244 (where MUT refers to "mysterious unattributed threat") by Datadog Security Labs, that involves phishing and several trojanized GitHub repositories hosting proof-of-concept (PoC) code for exploiting known security flaws. "Victims are believed to be offensive actors – including pentesters and security researchers, as well as malicious threat actors – and had sensitive data such as SSH private keys and AWS access keys exfiltrated," researchers Christophe Tafani-Dereeper, Matt Muir, and Adrian Korn said in an analysis shared with The Hacker News. It's no surprise that security researchers have been an attractive target for threat actors, including nation-sta...

Brazilian LofyGang Resurfaces After Three Years With Minecraft LofyStealer Campaign

Brazilian LofyGang Resurfaces After Three Years With Minecraft LofyStealer Campaign

Apr 28, 2026 Malware / Supply Chain Attack
A cybercrime group of Brazilian origin has resurfaced after more than three years to orchestrate a campaign that targets Minecraft players with a new stealer called LofyStealer (aka GrabBot). "The malware disguises itself as a Minecraft hack called 'Slinky,'" Brazil-based cybersecurity company ZenoX said in a technical report. "It uses the official game icon to induce voluntary execution, exploiting the trust of young users in the gaming scene." The activity has been attributed with high confidence to a threat actor known as LofyGang , which was observed leveraging typosquatted packages on the npm registry to push stealer malware in 2022, specifically with an intent to siphon credit card data and user accounts associated with Discord Nitro, gaming, and streaming services. The group, believed to be active since late 2021, advertises their tools and services on platforms like GitHub and YouTube, while also contributing to an underground hacking communit...
Bitwarden CLI Compromised in Ongoing Checkmarx Supply Chain Campaign

Bitwarden CLI Compromised in Ongoing Checkmarx Supply Chain Campaign

Apr 23, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Open Source
Bitwarden CLI , the command-line interface for the password manager Bitwarden, has reportedly been compromised as part of a newly discovered and ongoing Checkmarx supply chain campaign , according to findings from JFrog and Socket. "The affected package version appears to be @bitwarden/cli@2026.4.0 , and the malicious code was published in 'bw1.js,' a file included in the package contents," the application security company said . "The attack appears to have leveraged a compromised GitHub Action in Bitwarden's CI/CD pipeline, consistent with the pattern seen across other affected repositories in this campaign." In a post on X, JFrog said the rogue version of the package "steals GitHub/npm tokens, .ssh, .env, shell history, GitHub Actions and cloud secrets, then exfiltrates the data to private domains and as GitHub commits." Specifically, the malicious code is executed by means of a preinstall hook, resulting in the theft of local, CI, Git...
New Cryptojacking Attack Targets Docker API to Create Malicious Swarm Botnet

New Cryptojacking Attack Targets Docker API to Create Malicious Swarm Botnet

Oct 01, 2024 Cryptojacking / Docker Security
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a new cryptojacking campaign targeting the Docker Engine API with the goal of co-opting the instances to join a malicious Docker Swarm controlled by the threat actor. This enabled the attackers to "use Docker Swarm's orchestration features for command-and-control (C2) purposes," Datadog researchers Matt Muir and Andy Giron said in an analysis. The attacks leverage Docker for initial access to deploy a cryptocurrency miner on compromised containers, while also fetching and executing additional payloads that are responsible for conducting lateral movement to related hosts running Docker, Kubernetes, or SSH. Specifically, this involves identifying unauthenticated and exposed Docker API endpoints using Internet scanning tools, such as masscan and ZGrab . On vulnerable endpoints, the Docker API is used to spawn an Alpine container and then retrieve an initialization shell script (init.sh) from a remote server ("solscan[.]liv...
Seven Bolt-Ons to Make Your Entra ID More Secure for Critical Sessions

Seven Bolt-Ons to Make Your Entra ID More Secure for Critical Sessions

Dec 09, 2024 Identity Security / Passwordless
Identity security is all the rage right now, and rightfully so. Securing identities that access an organization’s resources is a sound security model. But IDs have their limits, and there are many use cases when a business should add other layers of security to a strong identity. And this is what we at SSH Communications Security want to talk about today. Let’s look at seven ways to add additional security controls for critical and sensitive sessions for privileged users as a bolt-on to other systems. Bolt-on 1: Securing access for high-impact IDs Since strong ID is a key element in privileged access, our model is to natively integrate with identity and access management (IAM) solutions, like Microsoft Entra ID. We use IAM as a source for identities and permissions and make sure your organization stays up–to–date with any changes in Entra ID on identities, groups, or permissions in real-time. The native integration allows automating the joiners-movers-leavers process since if a u...
Microsoft Warns of Malvertising Campaign Infecting Over 1 Million Devices Worldwide

Microsoft Warns of Malvertising Campaign Infecting Over 1 Million Devices Worldwide

Mar 07, 2025 Malvertising / Open Source
Microsoft has disclosed details of a large-scale malvertising campaign that's estimated to have impacted over one million devices globally as part of what it said is an opportunistic attack designed to steal sensitive information. The tech giant, which detected the activity in early December 2024, is tracking it under the broader umbrella Storm-0408, a moniker used for a set of threat actors that are known to distribute remote access or information-stealing malware via phishing, search engine optimization (SEO), or malvertising. "The attack originated from illegal streaming websites embedded with malvertising redirectors, leading to an intermediary website where the user was then redirected to GitHub and two other platforms," the Microsoft Threat Intelligence team said . "The campaign impacted a wide range of organizations and industries, including both consumer and enterprise devices, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the attack." The most signifi...
Popular Rust Crate liblzma-sys Compromised with XZ Utils Backdoor Files

Popular Rust Crate liblzma-sys Compromised with XZ Utils Backdoor Files

Apr 12, 2024 Supply Chain Attack / Threat Intelligence
"Test files" associated with the  XZ Utils backdoor  have made their way to a Rust crate known as  liblzma-sys , new  findings  from Phylum reveal. liblzma-sys, which has been downloaded over 21,000 times to date, provides Rust developers with bindings to the liblzma implementation, an underlying library that is part of the  XZ Utils  data compression software. The impacted version in question is 0.3.2. "The current distribution (v0.3.2) on Crates.io contains the test files for XZ that contain the backdoor," Phylum  noted  in a GitHub issue raised on April 9, 2024. "The test files themselves are not included in either the .tar.gz nor the .zip tags  here on GitHub  and are only present in liblzma-sys_0.3.2.crate that is installed from Crates.io." Following responsible disclosure, the files in question ("tests/files/bad-3-corrupt_lzma2.xz" and "tests/files/good-large_compressed.lzma") have since been removed from liblzma-sys vers...
Developer Workstations Are Now Part of the Software Supply Chain

Developer Workstations Are Now Part of the Software Supply Chain

May 18, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Developer Security
Supply chain attackers are not only trying to slip malicious code into trusted software. They are trying to steal the access that makes trusted software possible. Recently, three separate campaigns hit npm, PyPI, and Docker Hub in a 48-hour window, and all three targeted secrets from developer environments and CI/CD pipelines, including API keys, cloud credentials, SSH keys, and tokens. This is an ongoing concern and is self-propagating, as seen in attacks like the "mini Shai Hulud" campaigns.  That pattern should change how security teams think about the software supply chain. Traditionally, security focused on shared systems like source code repositories, CI/CD platforms, artifact registries, package managers, and cloud environments. The goal was to protect production workloads and data. We absolutely still need to focus on these areas, but it is an incomplete picture.  Modern software delivery begins before code reaches Git. It begins on the developer workstation, wher...

North Korea-Linked npm Packages Mimic Rollup Polyfills to Steal Developer Secrets

North Korea-Linked npm Packages Mimic Rollup Polyfills to Steal Developer Secrets

Jul 03, 2026 Software Supply Chain / Malware
Threat actors with ties to North Korea have been linked to a fresh set of malicious npm packages that masquerade as Rollup polyfill tooling to facilitate remote access and data theft. According to JFrog, the packages "rollup-packages-polyfill-core" and "rollup-runtime-polyfill-core" mimic the legitimate " rollup-plugin-polyfill-node " project, down to the description, repository metadata, and package shape. "The lookalike packages place themselves in the same rollup, polyfill, core, and node naming space, which can look plausible during a quick dependency review," JFrog said in a technical write-up of the campaign. The campaign also involves four other packages, all of which have since been removed from the npm registry - quirky-token react-icon-svgs rollup-plugin-polyfill-connect swift-parse-stream What's noteworthy here is that "rollup-packages-polyfill-core" installs and loads "swift-parse-stream,...

Cursor AI Code Editor Fixed Flaw Allowing Attackers to Run Commands via Prompt Injection

Aug 01, 2025 Vulnerability / DevOps
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed a now-patched, high-severity security flaw in Cursor, a popular artificial intelligence (AI) code editor, that could result in remote code execution (RCE). The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2025-54135 (CVSS score: 8.6), has been addressed in version 1.3 released on July 29, 2025. It has been codenamed CurXecute by Aim Labs, which previously disclosed EchoLeak . "Cursor runs with developer‑level privileges, and when paired with an MCP server that fetches untrusted external data, that data can redirect the agent's control flow and exploit those privileges," the Aim Labs Team said in a report shared with The Hacker News. "By feeding poisoned data to the agent via MCP, an attacker can gain full remote code execution under the user privileges, and achieve any number of things, including opportunities for ransomware, data theft, AI manipulation and hallucinations, etc." In other words, the remote code execution can trigg...

North Korean Hackers Are Turning Developer Tools Into Malware Delivery Channels

Jun 15, 2026 Malware / Supply Chain Attack
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged two malicious cyber campaigns that exhibit similarities with a persistent North Korean threat cluster known as Contagious Interview (aka Famous Chollima, HexagonalRodent, and Void Dokkaebi). According to a report published by Proofpoint, the threat actor has been found orchestrating phishing campaigns using developer role recruitment or code review themes to target nearly 100 organizations in finance, cryptocurrency, education, technology, and several other sectors. The activity has been codenamed UNK_DeadDrop . "The infection chain begins with emails containing links to actor-controlled GitHub repositories hosting malicious scripts that result in the execution of cross-platform malware for macOS, Linux, and Windows, including an open-source Go framework named Overlord ," Proofpoint researchers Saher Naumaan and Carlos Rubio said . A crucial aspect connecting the campaign to Pyongyang is the use of Microsoft Visual Studio Code (...

ThreatsDay Bulletin: PQC Push, AI Vuln Hunting, Pirated Traps, Phishing Kits & 20 More Stories

Mar 26, 2026 Cybersecurity / Hacking News
Some weeks in security feel loud. This one feels sneaky. Less big dramatic fireworks, more of that slow creeping sense that too many people are getting way too comfortable abusing things they probably shouldn’t even be touching. There’s a little bit of everything in this one, too. Weird delivery tricks, old problems coming back in slightly worse forms, shady infrastructure doing shady infrastructure things, and the usual reminder that if criminals find a workflow annoying, they’ll just make a new one by Friday. Efficient little parasites. You almost have to respect the commitment. A few of these updates have that nasty “yeah, that tracks” energy. Stuff that sounds niche right up until you picture it landing in a real environment with real users clicking real nonsense because they’re busy and tired and just trying to get through the day. Then it stops being abstract pretty fast. So yeah, this week’s ThreatsDay Bulletin is a solid scroll-befor...
