One Extension Could Hijack AI Assistants Across Chrome, Comet, Edge, Opera Neon and Claude

One Extension Could Hijack AI Assistants Across Chrome, Comet, Edge, Opera Neon and Claude

Sep 16, 2026 Vulnerability / Browser Security
Security researchers at Forever Security have shown that one ordinary browser extension could take control of the AI assistants built into five Chromium-based products: Gemini Live in Chrome, Perplexity Comet, Microsoft Edge, Opera Neon and the Claude in Chrome extension. Once the extension was installed, it could access each product's built-in AI with a single click. On Comet, Edge, Opera Neon, and Claude in Chrome, it could drive the AI agent to act on behalf of the attacker; on Chrome and Comet, it could read files from the user's computer, and on Chrome, it could also switch on the camera and microphone. The findings are researcher demonstrations, not attacks seen in the wild, and each requires the attacker's extension to be already running in the victim's browser. These products all work the same way. The AI has a "body" inside the browser that can see the screen, open files, use the camera, and take actions, and a "brain" that runs on th...
Chrome DevTools Technique Enables Authenticated Session Hijacking in Live Windows Browsers

Chrome DevTools Technique Enables Authenticated Session Hijacking in Live Windows Browsers

Aug 14, 2026 Browser Security / Endpoint Security
Cybersecurity researchers have detailed a post-exploitation technique that enables the  Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP)  inside a running Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge process on Windows, allowing an operator to access cookies, saved data, and authenticated browser sessions. The technique assumes that an operator already has code execution on the Windows host and does not involve exploiting a Chrome or Edge security vulnerability. The requirement for prior code execution and sufficient access to manipulate the target process places the technique in a narrower post-compromise scenario than a remotely exploitable browser flaw. SpecterOps said defenders can look for signs of process injection targeting chrome.exe and msedge.exe using Sysmon Event IDs 8 and 10. "Since App-Bound Encryption was enabled, we've seen an increase in attackers using Chrome Remote Debugging to extract cookies," Google said in a  March 2025 post . Google  changed C...
Microsoft Engineer Installs Google Chrome Mid-Presentation After Edge Kept Crashing

Microsoft Engineer Installs Google Chrome Mid-Presentation After Edge Kept Crashing

Nov 01, 2017
Ever since the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft has been heavily pushing its Edge browser, claiming it to be the best web browser over its competitors like Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome in terms of speed and battery performance. However, Microsoft must admit that most users make use of Edge or Internet Explorer only to download Chrome, which is by far the world's most popular internet browser. Something hilarious happened recently during a live demonstration when a Microsoft engineer caught on a video switching from Edge to Chrome after the default Windows 10 browser stopped responding in the middle of the presentation. That is really embarrassing. The incident happened in the middle of a Microsoft Ignite conference, where the Microsoft presenter Michael Leworthy was demonstrating how to one can migrate their applications and data to Microsoft Azure cloud service. See what happens in the video below: However, Leworthy was forced to pause his Azure presenta...

Chaos Ransomware Uses msaRAT to Route C2 Traffic Through Headless Chrome and Edge

Chaos Ransomware Uses msaRAT to Route C2 Traffic Through Headless Chrome and Edge

Jul 23, 2026 Ransomware / Network Security
The Chaos ransomware group ran its command-and-control through the victim's own browser. Cisco Talos on Thursday detailed msaRAT , the Rust implant behind it, found on a compromised Windows machine ahead of the encryptor. The implant never opens an outbound connection of its own. Its process talks to 127.0.0.1 and nothing else. It starts Chrome or Edge in headless mode and drives the browser over the Chrome DevTools Protocol, the browser's own debugging API. Every C2 message travels out from there through a WebRTC data channel relayed by Twilio's TURN service, so what a defender sees on the wire is a browser calling Cloudflare and Twilio. The attacker's own server address never appears at all. Chrome Does the Talking msaRAT looks for Chrome or Edge through environment variables first, then falls back to the registry for Chrome. If no matching browser is found, the CDP path is skipped. When it finds one, it starts the browser without a visible window using -...
ToddyCat-Linked Umbrij Malware Abuses OAuth to Access Gmail via Google API

ToddyCat-Linked Umbrij Malware Abuses OAuth to Access Gmail via Google API

Jul 02, 2026 API Security / Cyberespionage
The threat actor known as ToddyCat has been attributed to a new malware called Umbrij that's designed to gain surreptitious access to a victim's email correspondence via the Google API. "In this campaign, the attackers focused their attention on corporate email communications hosted on Gmail, targeting access compromise via APIs," Kaspersky said in a detailed report published this week. "Because the Google API relies on the OAuth 2.0 protocol for authorization, applications can use an OAuth token to access requested email resources." The adversary is said to have developed Umbrij to acquire this token and use it to connect to the browser's management console in headless mode via a remote debugging port. Subsequently, a series of requests was issued to obtain an OAuth authorization code, which was then exchanged for an access token to reach the target resources via the API. The technique has been codenamed Shadow Token via Remote Debug (STRD) b...
Hiding URLs in Google Chrome Could Be A Good Decision?

Hiding URLs in Google Chrome Could Be A Good Decision?

May 05, 2014
The collection of slashes and hyphens in URLs of websites make it look complicated and messy, now the new experimental version of the Google Chrome browser bury the whole URL into the top-level domain name. Google’s new experiment to the recent update to Chrome 's publicly available Canary browser indicates that in the coming weeks Google may eventually hide the full URLs of the websites and will show only the website name and domain even if you are navigating within the website, something familiar with the mobile version of Safari. Chrome Canary is an early build and a leading-edge of the next version of Google’s web browser and a couple of days ago, Google pushed an update to both of its Chrome Canary and beta builds that hide long URLs of a website from the address bar. OMNIBOX - NEW ADDRESS BAR The field that is mostly known as address bar is now better known as “omnibox”, a single bar at the top of the screen that gives you ability to type terms you want to ...
Urgent: Google Releases Critical Chrome Update for CVE-2025-6558 Exploit Active in the Wild

Urgent: Google Releases Critical Chrome Update for CVE-2025-6558 Exploit Active in the Wild

Jul 16, 2025 Browser Security / Zero-Day
Google on Tuesday rolled out fixes for six security issues in its Chrome web browser, including one that it said has been exploited in the wild. The high-severity vulnerability in question is CVE-2025-6558 (CVSS score: 8.8), which has been described as an incorrect validation of untrusted input in the browser's ANGLE and GPU components. "Insufficient validation of untrusted input in ANGLE and GPU in Google Chrome prior to 138.0.7204.157 allowed a remote attacker to potentially perform a sandbox escape via a crafted HTML page," according to the description of the flaw from the NIST's National Vulnerability Database (NVD). ANGLE, short for "Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine," acts as a translation layer between Chrome’s rendering engine and device-specific graphics drivers. Vulnerabilities in the module can let attackers escape Chrome’s sandbox by abusing low-level GPU operations that browsers usually keep isolated, making this a rare but powerful path...

Candiru Spyware Caught Exploiting Google Chrome Zero-Day to Target Journalists

Jul 22, 2022
The actively exploited but now-fixed Google Chrome zero-day flaw that came to light at the start of this month was weaponized by an Israeli spyware company and used in attacks targeting journalists in the Middle East. Czech cybersecurity firm Avast linked the exploitation to  Candiru  (aka Saito Tech), which has a history of  leveraging previously unknown flaws  to deploy a Windows malware dubbed DevilsTongue , a modular implant with  Pegasus -like capabilities. Candiru, along with NSO Group, Computer Security Initiative Consultancy PTE. LTD., and Positive Technologies, were  added to the entity list  by the U.S. Commerce Department in November 2021 for engaging in "malicious cyber activities." "Specifically, a large portion of the attacks took place in Lebanon, where journalists were among the targeted parties," security researcher Jan Vojtěšek, who reported the discovery of the flaw,  said  in a write-up. "We believe the attacks were hi...

This Phishing Attack is Almost Impossible to Detect On Chrome, Firefox and Opera

Apr 17, 2017
A Chinese infosec researcher has reported about an "almost impossible to detect" phishing attack that can be used to trick even the most careful users on the Internet. He warned, hackers can use a known vulnerability in the Chrome, Firefox and Opera web browsers to display their fake domain names as the websites of legitimate services, like Apple, Google, or Amazon to steal login or financial credentials and other sensitive information from users. What is the best defence against phishing attack? Generally, checking the address bar after the page has loaded and if it is being served over a valid HTTPS connection. Right? Okay, then before going to the in-depth details, first have a look at this demo web page  ( note: you may experience downtime due to high traffic on demo server ), set up by Chinese security researcher Xudong Zheng, who discovered the attack. “ It becomes impossible to identify the site as fraudulent without carefully inspecting the site's URL o...

ShadyPanda Turns Popular Browser Extensions with 4.3 Million Installs Into Spyware

Dec 01, 2025 Browser Security / Spyware
A threat actor known as ShadyPanda has been linked to a seven-year-long browser extension campaign that has amassed over 4.3 million installations over time. Five of these extensions started off as legitimate programs before malicious changes were introduced in mid-2024, according to a report from Koi Security, attracting 300,000 installs. These extensions have since been taken down. "These extensions now run hourly remote code execution – downloading and executing arbitrary JavaScript with full browser access," security researcher Tuval Admoni said in a report shared with The Hacker News. "They monitor every website visit, exfiltrate encrypted browsing history, and collect complete browser fingerprints." To make matters worse, one of the extensions, Clean Master, was featured and verified by Google at one point. This trust-building exercise allowed the attackers to expand their user base and silently issue malicious updates years later without attracting any...
