ThreatsDay Bulletin: MS Teams Hack, MFA Hijacking, $2B Crypto Heist, Apple Siri Probe & More

Oct 09, 2025 Cybersecurity / Hacking News
Cyber threats are evolving faster than ever. Attackers now combine social engineering, AI-driven manipulation, and cloud exploitation to breach targets once considered secure. From communication platforms to connected devices, every system that enhances convenience also expands the attack surface. This edition of ThreatsDay Bulletin explores these converging risks and the safeguards that help preserve trust in an increasingly intelligent threat landscape. How Threat Actors Abuse Microsoft Teams Attackers Abuse Microsoft Teams for Extortion, Social Engineering, and Financial Theft Microsoft detailed the various ways threat actors can abuse its Teams chat software at various stages of the attack chain, even using it to support financial theft through extortion, social engineering, or technical means. " Octo Tempest has used communication apps, including Teams, to send taunting and threatening messages to organizations, defenders, and incident response teams as p...
New Russian-Backed Gamaredon's Spyware Variants Targeting Ukrainian Authorities

New Russian-Backed Gamaredon's Spyware Variants Targeting Ukrainian Authorities

Feb 02, 2023 Cyber Risk / Threat Detection
The State Cyber Protection Centre (SCPC) of Ukraine has called out the Russian state-sponsored threat actor known as  Gamaredon  for its targeted cyber attacks on public authorities and critical information infrastructure in the country. The advanced persistent threat, also known as Actinium, Armageddon, Iron Tilden, Primitive Bear, Shuckworm, Trident Ursa, and UAC-0010, has a  track record  of  striking   Ukrainian entities  dating as far back as 2013. "UAC-0010 group's ongoing activity is characterized by a multi-step download approach and executing payloads of the spyware used to maintain control over infected hosts," the SCPC  said . "For now, the UAC-0010 group uses  GammaLoad and GammaSteel  spyware in their campaigns." GammaLoad is a VBScript dropper malware engineered to download next-stage VBScript from a remote server. GammaSteel is a PowerShell script that's capable of conducting reconnaissance and executing additional com...

Prowli Malware Targeting Servers, Routers, and IoT Devices

Jun 07, 2018
After the discovery of massive VPNFilter malware botnet , security researchers have now uncovered another giant botnet that has already compromised more than 40,000 servers, modems and internet-connected devices belonging to a wide number of organizations across the world. Dubbed Operation Prowli , the campaign has been spreading malware and injecting malicious code to take over servers and websites around the world using various attack techniques including use of exploits, password brute-forcing and abusing weak configurations. Discovered by researchers at the GuardiCore security team, Operation Prowli has already hit more than 40,000 victim machines from over 9,000 businesses in various domains, including finance, education and government organisations. Here's the list devices and services infected by the Prowli malware: Drupal and WordPress CMS servers hosting popular websites Joomla! servers running the K2 extension Backup servers running HP Data Protector softw...

Fileless Remcos RAT Delivered via LNK Files and MSHTA in PowerShell-Based Attacks

Fileless Remcos RAT Delivered via LNK Files and MSHTA in PowerShell-Based Attacks

May 16, 2025 Malware / Cyber Attack
Cybersecurity researchers have shed light on a new malware campaign that makes use of a PowerShell-based shellcode loader to deploy a remote access trojan called Remcos RAT. "Threat actors delivered malicious LNK files embedded within ZIP archives, often disguised as Office documents," Qualys security researcher Akshay Thorve said in a technical report. "The attack chain leverages mshta.exe for proxy execution during the initial stage." The latest wave of attacks, as detailed by Qualys, employs tax-related lures to entice users into opening a malicious ZIP archive containing a Windows shortcut (LNK) file, which, in turn, makes use of mshta.exe, a legitimate Microsoft tool used to run HTML Applications (HTA). The binary is used to execute an obfuscated HTA file named "xlab22.hta" hosted on a remote server, which incorporates Visual Basic Script code to download a PowerShell script, a decoy PDF, and another HTA file similar to xlab22.hta called "3...
Microsoft remotely deleted Tor-based 'Sefnit Botnet' from more than 2 Million Systems

Microsoft remotely deleted Tor-based 'Sefnit Botnet' from more than 2 Million Systems

Jan 21, 2014
In October 2013, Microsoft adopted a silent, offensive method to tackle infection due to a Tor-based botnet malware called ' Sefnit '. In an effort to takedown of the Sefnit botnet to protect windows users, Microsoft r emotely removes the older versions of installed Tor Browser software and infection from 2 Million systems, even without the knowledge of the system's owner. Last year in August, after Snowden revelations about the National Security Agency's ( NSA ) Spying programs, the Internet users were under fear of being spied. During the same time Tor Project leaders noticed almost 600% increase in the number of users over the anonymizing networks of Tor i.e. More than 600,000 users join Tor within few weeks. In September, researchers identified the major reason of increased Tor users i.e. A Tor-based botnet called ' Sefnit malware ', which was infecting millions of computers for click fraud and bitcoin mining. To achieve the maximum number...
New Phishing Campaign Targets Oil & Gas with Evolved Data-Stealing Malware

New Phishing Campaign Targets Oil & Gas with Evolved Data-Stealing Malware

Apr 04, 2024 Phishing Attack / Malware
An updated version of an information-stealing malware called Rhadamanthys is being used in phishing campaigns targeting the oil and gas sector. "The phishing emails use a unique vehicle incident lure and, in later stages of the infection chain, spoof the Federal Bureau of Transportation in a PDF that mentions a significant fine for the incident," Cofense researcher Dylan Duncan  said . The email message comes with a malicious link that leverages an open redirect flaw to take the recipients to a link hosting a supposed PDF document, but, in reality, is an image that, upon clicking, downloads a ZIP archive with the stealer payload. Written in C++,  Rhadamanthys  is designed to establish connections with a command-and-control (C2) server in order to harvest sensitive data from the compromised hosts. "This campaign appeared within days of the law enforcement takedown of the LockBit ransomware group," Duncan said. "While this could be a coincidence, Trend Micr...
