How to Generate a CrowdStrike RFM Report With AI in Tines

Dec 13, 2024 Automation / Endpoint Security
Run by the team at orchestration, AI, and automation platform Tines, the Tines library contains pre-built workflows shared by real security practitioners from across the community, all of which are free to import and deploy via the Community Edition of the platform.  Their bi-annual "You Did What with Tines?!" competition highlights some of the most interesting workflows submitted by their users, many of which demonstrate practical applications of large language models (LLMs) to address complex challenges in security operations. One recent winner is a workflow designed to automate CrowdStrike RFM reporting. Developed by Tom Power, a security analyst at The University of British Columbia, it uses orchestration, AI and automation to reduce the time spent on manual reporting. Here, we'll share an overview of the workflow, plus a step-by-step guide for getting it up and running. The problem - time-consuming reporting The workflow's builder, Tom Power, explains, "The CrowdStrike ...

New Linux Rootkit PUMAKIT Uses Advanced Stealth Techniques to Evade Detection

Dec 13, 2024 Linux / Threat Analysis
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a new Linux rootkit called PUMAKIT that comes with capabilities to escalate privileges, hide files and directories, and conceal itself from system tools, while simultaneously evading detection. "PUMAKIT is a sophisticated loadable kernel module (LKM) rootkit that employs advanced stealth mechanisms to hide its presence and maintain communication with command-and-control servers," Elastic Security Lab researchers Remco Sprooten and Ruben Groenewoud said in a technical report published Thursday. The company's analysis comes from artifacts uploaded to the VirusTotal malware scanning platform earlier this September. The internals of the malware is based on a multi-stage architecture that comprises a dropper component named "cron," two memory-resident executables ("/memfd:tgt" and "/memfd:wpn"), an LKM rootkit ("puma.ko"), and a shared object (SO) userland rootkit called Kitsune ("li...

The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) on Thursday announced the shutdown of an illicit marketplace called Rydox ("rydox[.]ru" and "rydox[.]cc") for selling stolen personal information, access devices, and other tools for conducting cybercrime and fraud. In tandem, three Kosovo nationals and administrators of the service, Ardit Kutleshi, Jetmir Kutleshi, and Shpend Sokoli, have been arrested. Ardit Kutleshi and Jetmir Kutleshi are expected to be extradited to the U.S. Sokoli, who was apprehended on December 12, 2024, in Albania, will be charged and prosecuted in the nation. "The Rydox marketplace has conducted over 7,600 sales of personally identifiable information (PII), stolen access devices, and cybercrime tools, which generated at least $230,000 in revenue since its inception in or around February 2016," the DoJ said in a statement. This included credit card information and login credentials stolen from thousands of victims residing in the United S...

Over 300K Prometheus Instances Exposed: Credentials and API Keys Leaking Online

Over 300K Prometheus Instances Exposed: Credentials and API Keys Leaking Online

Dec 12, 2024 Vulnerability / Cloud Security
Cybersecurity researchers are warning that thousands of servers hosting the Prometheus monitoring and alerting toolkit are at risk of information leakage and exposure to denial-of-service (DoS) as well as remote code execution (RCE) attacks. "Prometheus servers or exporters , often lacking proper authentication, allowed attackers to easily gather sensitive information, such as credentials and API keys," Aqua security researchers Yakir Kadkoda and Assaf Morag said in a new report shared with The Hacker News. The cloud security firm also said that the exposure of the "/debug/pprof" endpoints used for determining heap memory usage, CPU usage, and others, could serve as a vector for DoS attacks, rendering the servers inoperable. As many as 296,000 Prometheus Node Exporter instances and 40,300 Prometheus servers have been estimated to be publicly accessible over the internet, making them a huge attack surface that could put data and services at risk. The fact th...

Gamaredon Deploys Android Spyware "BoneSpy" and "PlainGnome" in Former Soviet States

Dec 12, 2024 Mobile Security / Cyber Espionage
The Russia-linked state-sponsored threat actor tracked as Gamaredon has been attributed to two new Android spyware tools called BoneSpy and PlainGnome , marking the first time the adversary has been discovered using mobile-only malware families in its attack campaigns. "BoneSpy and PlainGnome target former Soviet states and focus on Russian-speaking victims," Lookout said in an analysis. "Both BoneSpy and PlainGnome collect data such as SMS messages, call logs, phone call audio, photos from device cameras, device location, and contact lists." Gamaredon , also called Aqua Blizzard, Armageddon, BlueAlpha, Hive0051, Iron Tilden, Primitive Bear, Shuckworm, Trident Ursa, UAC-0010, UNC530, and Winterflounder, is a hacking group affiliated with Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). Last week, Recorded Future's Insikt Group revealed the threat actor's use of Cloudflare Tunnels as a tactic to conceal its staging infrastructure hosting malicious payload...

Researchers Uncover Symlink Exploit Allowing TCC Bypass in iOS and macOS

Dec 12, 2024 Vulnerability / Device Security
Details have emerged about a now-patched security vulnerability in Apple's iOS and macOS that, if successfully exploited, could sidestep the Transparency, Consent, and Control ( TCC ) framework and result in unauthorized access to sensitive information. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2024-44131 (CVSS score: 5.3), resides in the FileProvider component, per Apple, and has been addressed with improved validation of symbolic links (symlinks) in iOS 18, iPadOS 18 , and macOS Sequoia 15 . Jamf Threat Labs, which discovered and reported the flaw, said the TCC bypass could be exploited by a rogue installed on the system to grab sensitive data without users' knowledge. TCC serves as a critical security protection in Apple devices, giving end users a way to allow or deny a request from apps to access sensitive data, such as GPS location, contacts, and photos, among others. "This TCC bypass allows unauthorized access to files and folders, Health data, the microphone or camera, and m...

Dec 12, 2024 Cyber Crime / DDoS Attack
A global law enforcement operation has failed 27 stresser services that were used to conduct distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks and took them offline as part of a multi-year international exercise called PowerOFF. The effort, coordinated by Europol and involving 15 countries, dismantled several booter and stresser websites, including zdstresser.net, orbitalstress.net, and starkstresser.net. These services typically employ botnet malware installed on compromised devices to launch attacks on behalf of paying customers against targets of their liking. In addition, three administrators associated with the illicit platforms have been arrested in France and Germany, with over 300 users identified for planned operational activities. "Known as 'booter' and 'stresser' websites, these platforms enabled cybercriminals and hacktivists to flood targets with illegal traffic, rendering websites and other web-based services inaccessible," Europol said in a stat...
