New Admin Takeover Vulnerability Exposed in Synology's DiskStation Manager

New Admin Takeover Vulnerability Exposed in Synology's DiskStation Manager

Oct 18, 2023 Vulnerability / Data Security
A medium-severity flaw has been discovered in Synology's DiskStation Manager ( DSM ) that could be exploited to decipher an administrator's password and remotely hijack the account. "Under some rare conditions, an attacker could leak enough information to restore the seed of the pseudorandom number generator (PRNG), reconstruct the admin password, and remotely take over the admin account," Claroty's Sharon Brizinov  said  in a Tuesday report. The flaw, assigned the identifier CVE-2023-2729, is rated 5.9 for severity on the CVSS scoring scale. The flaw was addressed by Synology as part of  updates  released in June 2023. The problem is rooted in the fact that the software uses a weak random number generator that relies on the JavaScript  Math.random() method  to programmatically construct the admin password for the network-attached storage (NAS) device. Referred to as insecure randomness, it  arises  when a function that can produce predictab...

Synology Releases Patch for Critical RCE Vulnerability Affecting VPN Plus Servers

Jan 04, 2023 VPN / Server Security
Synology has released security updates to address a critical flaw impacting VPN Plus Server that could be exploited to take over affected systems. Tracked as  CVE-2022-43931 , the vulnerability carries a maximum severity rating of 10 on the CVSS scale and has been described as an out-of-bounds write bug in the remote desktop functionality in Synology VPN Plus Server. Successful exploitation of the issue "allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via unspecified vectors," the Taiwanese company  said , adding it was internally discovered by its Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT). Users of VPN Plus Server for Synology Router Manager (SRM) 1.2 and VPN Plus Server for SRM 1.3 are advised to update to versions 1.4.3-0534 and 1.4.4-0635, respectively. The network-attached storage appliance maker, in a second advisory, also  warned  of several flaws in SRM that could permit remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands, conduct denial-of-servi...
Product Walkthrough: How Satori Secures Sensitive Data From Production to AI

Product Walkthrough: How Satori Secures Sensitive Data From Production to AI

Jan 20, 2025Data Security / Data Monitoring
Every week seems to bring news of another data breach, and it's no surprise why: securing sensitive data has become harder than ever. And it's not just because companies are dealing with orders of magnitude more data. Data flows and user roles are constantly shifting, and data is stored across multiple technologies and cloud environments. Not to mention, compliance requirements are only getting stricter and more elaborate.  The problem is that while the data landscape has evolved rapidly, the usual strategies for securing that data are stuck in the past. Gone are the days when data lived in predictable places, with access controlled by a chosen few. Today, practically every department in the business needs to use customer data, and AI adoption means huge datasets, and a constant flux of permissions, use cases, and tools. Security teams are struggling to implement effective strategies for securing sensitive data, and a new crop of tools, called data security platforms, have appear...
