Detecting Windows-based Malware Through Better Visibility

Detecting Windows-based Malware Through Better Visibility
Apr 01, 2024 Malware Detection / Endpoint Security
Despite a plethora of available security solutions, more and more organizations fall victim to Ransomware and other threats. These continued threats aren't just an inconvenience that hurt businesses and end users - they damage the economy, endanger lives, destroy businesses and put national security at risk. But if that wasn't enough – North Korea appears to be  using revenue from cyber attacks to funds its nuclear weapons program . Small and mid-size businesses are increasingly caught in the dragnet of ongoing malware attacks - often due to underfunded IT departments. Exacerbating the problem are complex enterprise security solutions that are often out of reach for many companies - especially when multiple products are seemingly needed to establish a solid defense. Volume-based products that incentivize users to collect less data in order to conserve funds work backward, dampening the anticipated benefits. But what if you could detect many malware attacks holistically with

How to Achieve the Best Risk-Based Alerting (Bye-Bye SIEM)

How to Achieve the Best Risk-Based Alerting (Bye-Bye SIEM)
Feb 19, 2024 Network Detection and Response
Did you know that Network Detection and Response (NDR) has become the most effective technology to detect cyber threats? In contrast to SIEM, NDR offers adaptive cybersecurity with reduced false alerts and efficient threat response. Are you aware of  Network Detection and Response (NDR)  and how it's become the most effective technology to detect cyber threats?  NDR massively upgrades your security through risk-based alerting, prioritizing alerts based on the potential risk to your organization's systems and data. How? Well, NDR's real-time analysis, machine learning, and threat intelligence provide immediate detection, reducing alert fatigue and enabling better decision-making. In contrast to SIEM, NDR offers adaptive cybersecurity with reduced false positives and efficient threat response. Why Use Risk-Based Alerting? Risk-based alerting is an approach where security alerts and responses are prioritized based on the level of risk they pose to an organization's system

Timing is Everything: The Role of Just-in-Time Privileged Access in Security Evolution

Timing is Everything: The Role of Just-in-Time Privileged Access in Security Evolution
Apr 15, 2024Active Directory / Attack Surface
To minimize the risk of privilege misuse, a trend in the privileged access management (PAM) solution market involves implementing just-in-time (JIT) privileged access. This approach to  privileged identity management  aims to mitigate the risks associated with prolonged high-level access by granting privileges temporarily and only when necessary, rather than providing users with continuous high-level privileges. By adopting this strategy, organizations can enhance security, minimize the window of opportunity for potential attackers and ensure that users access privileged resources only when necessary.  What is JIT and why is it important?   JIT privileged access provisioning  involves granting privileged access to users on a temporary basis, aligning with the concept of least privilege. This principle provides users with only the minimum level of access required to perform their tasks, and only for the amount of time required to do so. One of the key advantages of JIT provisioning

Building a Robust Threat Intelligence with Wazuh
Dec 07, 2023 Threat Intelligence / Network Security
Threat intelligence refers to gathering, processing, and analyzing cyber threats, along with proactive defensive measures aimed at strengthening security. It enables organizations to gain a comprehensive insight into historical, present, and anticipated threats, providing context about the constantly evolving threat landscape. Importance of threat intelligence in the cybersecurity ecosystem Threat intelligence is a crucial part of any cybersecurity ecosystem. A robust cyber threat intelligence program helps organizations identify, analyze, and prevent security breaches. Threat intelligence is important to modern cyber security practice for several reasons: Proactive defense:  Organizations can enhance their overall cyber resilience by integrating threat intelligence into security practices to address the specific threats and risks that are relevant to their industry, geolocation, or technology stack. Threat intelligence allows organizations to identify potential threats in advanc

Enhancing Security Operations Using Wazuh: Open Source XDR and SIEM

Enhancing Security Operations Using Wazuh: Open Source XDR and SIEM
Aug 07, 2023 SIEM and XDR Platform
In today's interconnected world, evolving security solutions to meet growing demand is more critical than ever. Collaboration across multiple solutions for intelligence gathering and information sharing is indispensable. The idea of multiple-source intelligence gathering stems from the concept that threats are rarely isolated. Hence, their detection and prevention require a comprehensive understanding of the broader landscape. A comprehensive and robust security framework should be established by aggregating resources, knowledge, and expertise from various sources. This collaborative effort allows for the analysis of diverse data sets, the identification of emerging patterns, and the timely dissemination of crucial information.  In this article, we discuss a versatile security platform that can operate in two distinct roles within a security ecosystem. This platform can function as a subscriber, actively collecting and aggregating security data from various endpoints and other so

Auditing Kubernetes with Open Source SIEM and XDR

Auditing Kubernetes with Open Source SIEM and XDR
Feb 01, 2023 SIEM / Kubernetes
Container technology has gained traction among businesses due to the increased efficiency it provides. In this regard, organizations widely use Kubernetes for deploying, scaling, and managing containerized applications. Organizations should audit Kubernetes to ensure compliance with regulations, find anomalies, and identify security risks. The Wazuh open source platform plays a critical role in monitoring Kubernetes and other components of an organization's infrastructure. What is Kubernetes? Kubernetes is an open source container management solution that automates the deployment and scaling of containers and also manages the life cycle of containers. It organizes containers into logical units for simple management and discovery. Kubernetes extends how we scale containerized applications so that we may use a truly persistent infrastructure. You can build cloud-native applications based on microservices with Kubernetes. Enthusiasts view Kubernetes as the cornerstone of application m

Detecting the "Next" SolarWinds-Style Cyber Attack

Detecting the "Next" SolarWinds-Style Cyber Attack
Apr 13, 2021
The SolarWinds attack , which succeeded by utilizing the sunburst malware , shocked the cyber-security industry. This attack achieved persistence and was able to evade internal systems long enough to gain access to the source code of the victim. Because of the far-reaching SolarWinds deployments, the perpetrators were also able to infiltrate many other organizations, looking for intellectual property and other assets. Among the co-victims: US government, government contractors, Information Technology companies, and NGOs. An incredible amount of sensitive data was stolen from several customers after a trojanized version of SolarWinds' application was installed on their internal structures. Looking at the technical capabilities of the malware, as you will see, this particular attack was quite impressive. A particular file, named  SolarWinds.Orion.Core.BusinessLayer.dll  is a SolarWinds digitally signed component of the Orion software framework. The threat actors installed a back
