20-Year-Old Man Arrested For Carrying Out Germany's Biggest Data Leak

Jan 08, 2019
German federal police have arrested a 20-year-old local student for stealing and publishing a massive trove of personal data of hundreds of politicians , journalists and other public figures last month. The young man, whose identity has not been revealed by the police, was arrested after police raided his parent's house in west-central German State of Hesse on Sunday and recovered a computer that the suspect tried to destroy 2 days before the search and a data backup. The suspect, who believed to have acted alone, has admitted of carrying out the mass hacking of German politicians out of anger at their political statements, BKA Federal Criminal Police revealed. "The accused was interrogated on 07.01.2019 by the senior prosecutor and officials of the Federal Criminal Police Office. He comprehensively acknowledged the allegations against him and provided information on his own offenses," the BKA said in a press release . "Due to a lack of grounds for detentio...

Hillary Clinton's Presidential Campaign also Hacked in Attack on Democratic Party

Jul 30, 2016
There's a lot more to come from the DNC Hack. The Associated Press confirmed yesterday that the computer systems used by Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign were hacked as part of the recent Democratic National Convention (DNC) hack. Last week's email dump containing almost 20,000 emails from top DNC officials was just the beginning, which led DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to resign as the group's leader, as WikiLeaks announced that it was part one of its new Hillary Leaks series. This suggests WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange has had his hands on more data from the DNC hack that, according to him, could eventually result in the arrest of Hillary Clinton. Assange — Wikileaks' Next Leak will lead to Arrest of Hillary Clinton In an interview with Robert Preston of ITV last month, Assange made it clear that he hopes to harm Hillary Clinton's chances from becoming president of the United States, opposing her candidacy on both policies as well...

Want to Grow Vulnerability Management into Exposure Management? Start Here!

Dec 05, 2024Attack Surface / Exposure Management
Vulnerability Management (VM) has long been a cornerstone of organizational cybersecurity. Nearly as old as the discipline of cybersecurity itself, it aims to help organizations identify and address potential security issues before they become serious problems. Yet, in recent years, the limitations of this approach have become increasingly evident.  At its core, Vulnerability Management processes remain essential for identifying and addressing weaknesses. But as time marches on and attack avenues evolve, this approach is beginning to show its age. In a recent report, How to Grow Vulnerability Management into Exposure Management (Gartner, How to Grow Vulnerability Management Into Exposure Management, 8 November 2024, Mitchell Schneider Et Al.), we believe Gartner® addresses this point precisely and demonstrates how organizations can – and must – shift from a vulnerability-centric strategy to a broader Exposure Management (EM) framework. We feel it's more than a worthwhile read an...

Hacker Breaks into Political Party's Video Conference System; Could Spy, too!

Jun 20, 2016
A critical flaw in the video conferencing software of the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) − a Canadian federalist provincial political party − allowed a user to spy on and hear the strategy discussions of the party at its premises and even access the live video camera feeds. But luckily, the unknown white hat hacker who discovered the flaw alerted the PLQ staff of the security issue, showing them some videos of the discussions held at the party headquarters as a proof-of-concept. What if the hacker was having a malicious intent? He could have spied on the party's video feeds covertly and could have handed over the feeds and sensitive information, along with the working intrusion bug, to the opposition party for monetary benefits. It seems like the hacker spied on video conference meetings between PLQ's Quebec and Montreal branches. According to the hacker, the PLQ's software not only contained a security vulnerability but also used the factory default password, rep...

Three Politicians Hacked Using Unsecured Wi-Fi Network

Jul 11, 2015
If you are one of our readers who follow The Hacker News every update, you probably know that Public WiFi network is a security risk. But many people aren't aware, including our great politicians. Internet security provider F-Secure carried out an experimental hack against three prominent UK politicians and hacked into their accounts with the help of public Wi-Fi network. To be very clear, all the three politicians – Rt. Hon. David Davis MP, Mary Honeyball MEP and Lord Strasburger – gave their consent to the recent exercise that focused on hacking into their devices using public, freely available Wi-Fi networks across London. F-Secure teamed up with the penetration testing firm Mandalorian Security Services and the Cyber Security Research Institute to carry out the tests . Despite holding major positions within the different parliaments, all three politicians admitted that they had " received no formal training or information about the relative ease " wi...
