Researchers Uncover BankBot-YNRK and DeliveryRAT Android Trojans Stealing Financial Data

Researchers Uncover BankBot-YNRK and DeliveryRAT Android Trojans Stealing Financial Data

11月 03, 2025 Malware / Mobile Security
Cybersecurity researchers have shed light on two different Android trojans called BankBot-YNRK and DeliveryRAT that are capable of harvesting sensitive data from compromised devices. According to CYFIRMA, which analyzed three different samples of BankBot-YNRK, the malware incorporates features to sidestep analysis efforts by first checking its running within a virtualized or emulated environment, and then extracting device details such as the manufacturer and model name to ascertain if it's being executed on a real device. BankBot-YNRK also checks if the device is manufactured by Oppo, or is running on ColorOS, a version of the Android operating system that's used on devices made by the Chinese original equipment manufacturer (OEM). "The malware also includes logic to identify specific devices," CYFIRMA said. "It verifies whether the device is a Google Pixel or a Samsung device and checks if its model is included in a predefined list of recognized or suppo...

Preparing for the Digital Battlefield of 2026: Ghost Identities, Poisoned Accounts, & AI Agent Havoc

10月 29, 2025 Artificial Intelligence / Data Breach
BeyondTrust's annual cybersecurity predictions point to a year where old defenses will fail quietly, and new attack vectors will surge. Introduction The next major breach won't be a phished password. It will be the result of a massive, unmanaged identity debt. This debt takes many forms: it's the "ghost" identity from a 2015 breach lurking in your IAM, the privilege sprawl from thousands of new AI agents bloating your attack surface , or the automated account poisoning that exploits weak identity verification in financial systems. All of these vectors—physical, digital, new, and old—are converging on one single point of failure: identity .  Based on analysis from BeyondTrust's cybersecurity experts, here are three critical identity-based threats that will define the coming year:  1. Agentic AI Emerges as the Ultimate Attack Vector By 2026, agentic AI will be connected to nearly every technology we operate, effectively becoming the new middleware for most organizations. ...

Smishing Triad Linked to 194,000 Malicious Domains in Global Phishing Operation

10月 24, 2025 Data Breach / Cybercrime
The threat actors behind a large-scale, ongoing smishing campaign have been attributed to more than 194,000 malicious domains since January 1, 2024, targeting a broad range of services across the world, according to new findings from Palo Alto Networks Unit 42. "Although these domains are registered through a Hong Kong-based registrar and use Chinese nameservers, the attack infrastructure is primarily hosted on popular U.S. cloud services," security researchers Reethika Ramesh, Zhanhao Chen, Daiping Liu, Chi-Wei Liu, Shehroze Farooqi, and Moe Ghasemisharif said . The activity has been attributed to a China-linked group known as the Smishing Triad , which is known to flood mobile devices with fraudulent toll violation and package misdelivery notices to trick users into taking immediate action and providing sensitive information. These campaigns have proven to be lucrative, allowing the threat actors to make more than $1 billion over the last three years, according to a re...

New Android Banking Trojan “Klopatra” Uses Hidden VNC to Control Infected Smartphones

New Android Banking Trojan "Klopatra" Uses Hidden VNC to Control Infected Smartphones

10月 01, 2025 Malware / Mobile Security
A previously undocumented Android banking trojan called Klopatra has compromised over 3,000 devices, with a majority of the infections reported in Spain and Italy. Italian fraud prevention firm Cleafy, which discovered the sophisticated malware and remote access trojan (RAT) in late August 2025, said it leverages Hidden Virtual Network Computing (VNC) for remote control of infected devices and dynamic overlays for facilitating credential theft, ultimately enabling fraudulent transactions. "Klopatra represents a significant evolution in mobile malware sophistication," security researchers Federico Valentini, Alessandro Strino, Simone Mattia, and Michele Roviello said . "It combines extensive use of native libraries with the integration of Virbox, a commercial-grade code protection suite, making it exceptionally difficult to detect and analyze." Evidence gathered from the malware's command-and-control (C2) infrastructure and linguistic clues in the associated...
New Android Trojan “Datzbro” Tricking Elderly with AI-Generated Facebook Travel Events

New Android Trojan "Datzbro" Tricking Elderly with AI-Generated Facebook Travel Events

9月 30, 2025 Mobile Security / Cybercrime
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged a previously undocumented Android banking trojan called Datzbro that can conduct device takeover ( DTO ) attacks and perform fraudulent transactions by preying on the elderly. Dutch mobile security company ThreatFabric said it discovered the campaign in August 2025 after users in Australia reported scammers managing Facebook groups promoting "active senior trips." Some of the other territories targeted by the threat actors include Singapore, Malaysia, Canada, South Africa, and the U.K. The campaigns, it added, specifically focused on elderly people looking for social activities, trips, in-person meetings, and similar events. These Facebook groups have been found to share artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content, claiming to organize various activities for seniors. Should prospective targets express willingness to participate in these events, they are subsequently approached via Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp, where they are as...
Silver Fox Exploits Microsoft-Signed WatchDog Driver to Deploy ValleyRAT Malware

Silver Fox Exploits Microsoft-Signed WatchDog Driver to Deploy ValleyRAT Malware

9月 02, 2025 Financial Fraud / Endpoint Protection
The threat actor known as Silver Fox has been attributed to abuse of a previously unknown vulnerable driver associated with WatchDog Anti-malware as part of a Bring Your Own Vulnerable Driver ( BYOVD ) attack aimed at disarming security solutions installed on compromised hosts. The vulnerable driver in question is "amsdk.sys" (version 1.0.600), a 64-bit, validly signed Windows kernel device driver that's assessed to be built upon Zemana Anti-Malware SDK. "This driver, built on the Zemana Anti-Malware SDK, was Microsoft-signed, not listed in the Microsoft Vulnerable Driver Blocklist , and not detected by community projects like LOLDrivers," Check Point said in an analysis. The attack is characterized by a dual-driver strategy, where a known vulnerable Zemana driver ("zam.exe") is used for Windows 7 machines, and the undetected WatchDog driver for systems that run on Windows 10 or 11. The WatchDog Anti-malware driver has been found to contain mu...
HOOK Android Trojan Adds Ransomware Overlays, Expands to 107 Remote Commands

HOOK Android Trojan Adds Ransomware Overlays, Expands to 107 Remote Commands

8月 26, 2025
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new variant of an Android banking trojan called HOOK that features ransomware-style overlay screens to display extortion messages. "A prominent characteristic of the latest variant is its capacity to deploy a full-screen ransomware overlay, which aims to coerce the victim into remitting a ransom payment," Zimperium zLabs researcher Vishnu Pratapagiri said . "This overlay presents an alarming '*WARNING*' message, alongside a wallet address and amount, both of which are dynamically retrieved from the command-and-control server." The mobile security company said the overlay is remotely initiated when the command "ransome" is issued by the C2 server. The overlay can be dismissed by the attacker by sending the "delete_ransome" command. HOOK is assessed to be an offshoot of the ERMAC banking trojan, which, coincidentally, had its source code leaked on a publicly accessible directory over the int...
RubyGems, PyPI Hit by Malicious Packages Stealing Credentials, Crypto, Forcing Security Changes

RubyGems, PyPI Hit by Malicious Packages Stealing Credentials, Crypto, Forcing Security Changes

8月 08, 2025 Malware / Supply Chain Security
A fresh set of 60 malicious packages has been uncovered targeting the RubyGems ecosystem by posing as seemingly innocuous automation tools for social media, blogging, or messaging services to steal credentials from unsuspecting users and likely resell them on dark web forums like Russian Market. The activity is assessed to be active since at least March 2023, according to the software supply chain security company Socket. Cumulatively, the gems have been downloaded more than 275,000 times. That said, it bears noting that the figure may not accurately represent the actual number of compromised systems, as not every download results in execution, and it's possible several of these gems have been downloaded to a single machine. "Since at least March 2023, a threat actor using the aliases zon, nowon, kwonsoonje, and soonje has published 60 malicious gems posing as automation tools for Instagram, Twitter/X, TikTok, WordPress, Telegram, Kakao, and Naver," security researche...
UNC2891 Breaches ATM Network via 4G Raspberry Pi, Tries CAKETAP Rootkit for Fraud

UNC2891 Breaches ATM Network via 4G Raspberry Pi, Tries CAKETAP Rootkit for Fraud

7月 31, 2025
The financially motivated threat actor known as UNC2891 has been observed targeting Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) infrastructure using a 4G-equipped Raspberry Pi as part of a covert attack. The cyber-physical attack involved the adversary leveraging their physical access to install the Raspberry Pi device and have it connected directly to the same network switch as the ATM, effectively placing it within the target bank's network, Group-IB said. It's currently not known how this access was obtained. "The Raspberry Pi was equipped with a 4G modem, allowing remote access over mobile data," security researcher Nam Le Phuong said in a Wednesday report. "Using the TINYSHELL backdoor, the attacker established an outbound command-and-control (C2) channel via a Dynamic DNS domain. This setup enabled continuous external access to the ATM network, completely bypassing perimeter firewalls and traditional network defenses." UNC2891 was first documented by Googl...

7月 03, 2025 Mobile Security / Cybercrime
A mobile ad fraud operation dubbed IconAds that consisted of 352 Android apps has been disrupted, according to a new report from HUMAN. The identified apps were designed to load out-of-context ads on a user's screen and hide their icons from the device home screen launcher, making it harder for victims to remove them, per the company's Satori Threat Intelligence and Research Team. The apps have since been removed from the Play Store by Google. The ad fraud scheme accounted for 1.2 billion bid requests a day, at the height of its activity. The vast majority of IconAds-associated traffic originated from Brazil, Mexico, and the United States. It's worth noting that IconAds is a variant of a threat that's also tracked by other cybersecurity vendors under the names HiddenAds and Vapor , with the malicious apps repeatedly slipping past the Google Play Store since at least 2019 . Some of the common characteristics of these apps include the use of obfuscation to conceal...
