VolkLocker Ransomware Exposed by Hard-Coded Master Key Allowing Free Decryption

VolkLocker Ransomware Exposed by Hard-Coded Master Key Allowing Free Decryption

Dec 15, 2025 Ransomware / Cybercrime
The pro-Russian hacktivist group known as CyberVolk (aka GLORIAMIST) has resurfaced with a new ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) offering called VolkLocker that suffers from implementation lapses in test artifacts, allowing users to decrypt files without paying an extortion fee. According to SentinelOne, VolkLocker (aka CyberVolk 2.x) emerged in August 2025 and is capable of targeting both Windows and Linux systems. It's written in Golang. "Operators building new VolkLocker payloads must provide a bitcoin address, Telegram bot token ID, Telegram chat ID, encryption deadline, desired file extension, and self-destruct options," security researcher Jim Walter said in a report published last week. Once launched, the ransomware attempts to escalate privileges, performs reconnaissance and system enumeration, including checking local MAC address prefixes against known virtualization vendors like Oracle and VMware. In the next stage, it lists all available drives and determin...
Free Decryptor Released for BitLocker-Based ShrinkLocker Ransomware Victims

Free Decryptor Released for BitLocker-Based ShrinkLocker Ransomware Victims

Nov 13, 2024 Ransomware / Data Protection
Romanian cybersecurity company Bitdefender has released a free decryptor to help victims recover data encrypted using the ShrinkLocker ransomware. The decryptor is the result of a comprehensive analysis of ShrinkLocker's inner workings, allowing the researchers to discover a "specific window of opportunity for data recovery immediately after the removal of protectors from BitLocker-encrypted disks." ShrinkLocker was first documented in May 2024 by Kaspersky, which found the malware's use of Microsoft's native BitLocker utility for encrypting files as part of extortion attacks targeting Mexico, Indonesia, and Jordan. It appears to have been adapted from benign ten-year-old code. Bitdefender, which investigated a ShrinkLocker incident targeting an unnamed healthcare company in the Middle East, said the attack likely originated from a machine belonging to a contractor, once again highlighting how threat actors are increasingly abusing trusted relationships to ...
Rhysida Ransomware Cracked, Free Decryption Tool Released

Rhysida Ransomware Cracked, Free Decryption Tool Released

Feb 12, 2024 Vulnerability / Data Recovery
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered an "implementation vulnerability" that has made it possible to reconstruct encryption keys and decrypt data locked by Rhysida ransomware. The findings were published last week by a group of researchers from Kookmin University and the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA). "Through a comprehensive analysis of Rhysida Ransomware, we identified an implementation vulnerability, enabling us to regenerate the encryption key used by the malware," the researchers  said . The development marks the first successful decryption of the ransomware strain, which first made its appearance in May 2023. A  recovery tool  is being distributed through KISA. The study is also the latest to achieve data decryption by exploiting implementation vulnerabilities in ransomware, after  Magniber v2 , Ragnar Locker,  Avaddon , and  Hive . Rhysida , which is known to share overlaps with another ransomware crew called Vice Society, lever...
