The Hidden Risks of SaaS: Why Built-In Protections Aren't Enough for Modern Data Resilience

The Hidden Risks of SaaS: Why Built-In Protections Aren't Enough for Modern Data Resilience

Jun 26, 2025 Data Protection / Compliance
SaaS Adoption is Skyrocketing, Resilience Hasn't Kept Pace SaaS platforms have revolutionized how businesses operate. They simplify collaboration, accelerate deployment, and reduce the overhead of managing infrastructure. But with their rise comes a subtle, dangerous assumption: that the convenience of SaaS extends to resilience. It doesn't. These platforms weren't built with full-scale data protection in mind . Most follow a shared responsibility model — wherein the provider ensures uptime and application security, but the data inside is your responsibility. In a world of hybrid architectures, global teams, and relentless cyber threats, that responsibility is harder than ever to manage. Modern organizations are being stretched across: Hybrid and multi-cloud environments with decentralized data sprawl Complex integration layers between IaaS, SaaS, and legacy systems Expanding regulatory pressure with steeper penalties for noncompliance Escalating ransomware threats and inside...
6 Steps to 24/7 In-House SOC Success

6 Steps to 24/7 In-House SOC Success

Jun 20, 2025 Security Operations / Threat Detection
Hackers never sleep, so why should enterprise defenses? Threat actors prefer to target businesses during off-hours. That's when they can count on fewer security personnel monitoring systems, delaying response and remediation. When retail giant Marks & Spencer experienced a security event over Easter weekend, they were forced to shut down their online operations, which account for approximately a third of the retailer's clothing and home sales. As most staff are away during off-hours and holidays, it takes time to assemble an incident response team and initiate countermeasures. This gives attackers more time to move laterally within the network and wreak havoc before the security team reacts. While not every organization may be ready to staff an in-house team around the clock, building a 24/7 SOC remains one of the most robust and proactive ways to protect against off-hours attacks. In the rest of this post, we'll explore why 24/7 vigilance is so important, the challenges ...
FedRAMP at Startup Speed: Lessons Learned

FedRAMP at Startup Speed: Lessons Learned

Jun 18, 2025 DevSecOps / Security Architecture
For organizations eyeing the federal market, FedRAMP can feel like a gated fortress. With strict compliance requirements and a notoriously long runway, many companies assume the path to authorization is reserved for the well-resourced enterprise. But that's changing. In this post, we break down how fast-moving startups can realistically achieve FedRAMP Moderate authorization without derailing product velocity, drawing from real-world lessons, technical insights, and the bruises earned along the way from a cybersecurity startup that just went through the process. Why It Matters Winning in the federal space starts with trust—and that trust begins with FedRAMP. But pursuing authorization is not a simple compliance checkbox. It's a company-wide shift that requires intentional strategy, deep security investment, and a willingness to move differently than most startups. Let's get into what that actually looks like. Keys to a Successful FedRAMP Authorization 1. Align to NIST 800-53 fro...

Between Buzz and Reality: The CTEM Conversation We All Need

Between Buzz and Reality: The CTEM Conversation We All Need

Jun 24, 2025Threat Exposure Management
I had the honor of hosting the first episode of the Xposure Podcast live from Xposure Summit 2025. And I couldn't have asked for a better kickoff panel: three cybersecurity leaders who don't just talk security, they live it. Let me introduce them. Alex Delay , CISO at IDB Bank, knows what it means to defend a highly regulated environment. Ben Mead , Director of Cybersecurity at Avidity Biosciences, brings a forward-thinking security perspective that reflects the innovation behind Avidity's targeted RNA therapeutics. Last but not least, Michael Francess , Director of Cybersecurity Advanced Threat at Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, leads the charge in protecting the franchise. Each brought a unique vantage point to a common challenge: applying Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) to complex production environments. Gartner made waves in 2023 with a bold prediction: organizations that prioritize CTEM will be three times less likely to be breached by 2026. But here's the kicker -...
Playbook: Transforming Your Cybersecurity Practice Into An MRR Machine

Playbook: Transforming Your Cybersecurity Practice Into An MRR Machine

Jun 16, 2025 Risk Management / Virtual CISO
Introduction The cybersecurity landscape is evolving rapidly, and so are the cyber needs of organizations worldwide. While businesses face mounting pressure from regulators, insurers, and rising threats, many still treat cybersecurity as an afterthought. As a result, providers may struggle to move beyond tactical services like one-off assessments or compliance checklists, and demonstrate long-term security value.  To stay competitive and drive lasting impact, leading service providers are repositioning cybersecurity as a strategic business enabler, and transitioning from reactive, risk-based services to ongoing cybersecurity management aligned with business goals. For service providers, this shift opens a clear opportunity to move beyond tactical projects and become long-term security partners, while unlocking new streams of recurring revenue.  Many MSPs, MSSPs, and consultancies already provide valuable point solutions, from identifying vulnerabilities to supporting audi...
Non-Human Identities: How to Address the Expanding Security Risk

Non-Human Identities: How to Address the Expanding Security Risk

Jun 12, 2025 DevOps / AI Security
Human identities management and control is pretty well done with its set of dedicated tools, frameworks, and best practices. This is a very different world when it comes to Non-human identities also referred to as machine identities. GitGuardian's end-to-end NHI security platform is here to close the gap. Enterprises are Losing Track of Their Machine Identities Machine identities–service accounts, API keys, bots, automation, and workload identities–that now outnumber humans by up to 100:1 are in fact a massive blind spot in companies' security landscape: Without robust governance, NHIs become a prime target for attackers. Orphaned credentials, over-privileged accounts, and "zombie" secrets are proliferating—especially as organizations accelerate cloud adoption, integrate AI-powered agents, and automate their infrastructure . Secrets Sprawl: The New Attack Surface GitGuardian's research shows that 70% of valid secrets detected in public repositories in 2022 remained active in ...
Researchers Uncover 20+ Configuration Risks, Including Five CVEs, in Salesforce Industry Cloud

Researchers Uncover 20+ Configuration Risks, Including Five CVEs, in Salesforce Industry Cloud

Jun 10, 2025 Vulnerability / SaaS Security
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered over 20 configuration-related risks affecting Salesforce Industry Cloud (aka Salesforce Industries ), exposing sensitive data to unauthorized internal and external parties. The weaknesses affect various components like FlexCards, Data Mappers, Integration Procedures (IProcs), Data Packs, OmniOut, and OmniScript Saved Sessions. "Low-code platforms such as Salesforce Industry Cloud make building applications easier, but that convenience can come at a cost if security isn't prioritized," Aaron Costello, chief of SaaS Security Research at AppOmni, said in a statement shared with The Hacker News. These misconfigurations, if left unaddressed, could allow cybercriminals and unauthorized to access encrypted confidential data on employees and customers, session data detailing how users have interacted with Salesforce Industry Cloud, credentials for Salesforce and other company systems, and business logic. Following responsible discl...

Google Chrome to Distrust Two Certificate Authorities Over Compliance and Conduct Issues

Jun 03, 2025 Web Security / Digital Identity
Google has revealed that it will no longer trust digital certificates issued by Chunghwa Telecom and Netlock citing "patterns of concerning behavior observed over the past year." The changes are expected to be introduced in Chrome 139, which is scheduled for public release in early August 2025. The current major version is 137.  The update will affect all Transport Layer Security (TLS) server authentication certificates issued by the two Certificate Authorities (CAs) after July 31, 2025, 11:59:59 p.m. UTC. Certificates issued before that date will not be impacted. Chunghwa Telecom is Taiwan's largest integrated telecom service provider and Netlock is a Hungarian company that offers digital identity, electronic signature, time stamping, and authentication solutions. "Over the past several months and years, we have observed a pattern of compliance failures, unmet improvement commitments, and the absence of tangible, measurable progress in response to publicly di...
The Secret Defense Strategy of Four Critical Industries Combating Advanced Cyber Threats

The Secret Defense Strategy of Four Critical Industries Combating Advanced Cyber Threats

Jun 02, 2025 Threat Detection / OT Security
The evolution of cyber threats has forced organizations across all industries to rethink their security strategies. As attackers become more sophisticated — leveraging encryption, living-off-the-land techniques, and lateral movement to evade traditional defenses — security teams are finding more threats wreaking havoc before they can be detected. Even after an attack has been identified, it can be hard for security teams to prove to auditors that they have fully mitigated the issues that allowed the attackers in. Security teams worldwide have prioritized endpoint detection and response (EDR), which has become so effective that threat actors have changed their tactics to avoid attack vectors protected by host-based defenses. These advanced threats are particularly vexing for critical infrastructure providers in financial services , energy and utilities , transportation , and government agencies that may have proprietary systems that cannot be protected by traditional endpoint securi...
Microsoft OneDrive File Picker Flaw Grants Apps Full Cloud Access — Even When Uploading Just One File

Microsoft OneDrive File Picker Flaw Grants Apps Full Cloud Access — Even When Uploading Just One File

May 28, 2025 Data Privacy / Vulnerability
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a security flaw in Microsoft's OneDrive File Picker that, if successfully exploited, could allow websites to access a user's entire cloud storage content, as opposed to just the files selected for upload via the tool. "This stems from overly broad OAuth scopes and misleading consent screens that fail to clearly explain the extent of access being granted," the Oasis Research Team said in a report shared with The Hacker News. "This flaw could have severe consequences, including customer data leakage and violation of compliance regulations." It's assessed that several apps are affected, such as ChatGPT, Slack, Trello, and ClickUp, given their integration with Microsoft's cloud service. The problem, Oasis said, is the result of excessive permissions requested by the OneDrive File Picker, which seeks read access to the entire drive, even in cases only a single file is uploaded due to the absence of fine-grai...
