Microsoft Reveals ClickFix Campaign Using Windows Terminal to Deploy Lumma Stealer

Microsoft Reveals ClickFix Campaign Using Windows Terminal to Deploy Lumma Stealer

Mar 06, 2026 Endpoint Security / Browser Security
Microsoft on Thursday disclosed details of a new widespread ClickFix social engineering campaign that has leveraged the Windows Terminal app as a way to activate a sophisticated attack chain and deploy the Lumma Stealer malware. The activity, observed in February 2026, makes use of the terminal emulator program instead of instructing users to launch the Windows Run dialog and paste a command into it. "This campaign instructs targets to use the Windows + X → I shortcut to launch Windows Terminal (wt.exe) directly, guiding users into a privileged command execution environment that blends into legitimate administrative workflows and appears more trustworthy to users," the Microsoft Threat Intelligence team said in a series of posts on X. What makes the latest variant notable is that it bypasses detections specifically designed to flag Run dialog abuse, not to mention take advantage of the legitimacy of Windows Terminal to trick unsuspecting users into running malicious ...
Phantom Stealer Spread by ISO Phishing Emails Hitting Russian Finance Sector

Phantom Stealer Spread by ISO Phishing Emails Hitting Russian Finance Sector

Dec 15, 2025 Malware / Cybercrime
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of an active phishing campaign that's targeting a wide range of sectors in Russia with phishing emails that deliver Phantom Stealer via malicious ISO optical disc images. The activity, codenamed Operation MoneyMount-ISO by Seqrite Labs, has primarily singled out finance and accounting entities, with those in the procurement, legal, payroll verticals emerging as secondary targets. "This campaign employs a fake payment confirmation lure to deliver the Phantom information-stealing malware through a multi-stage attachment chain," the cybersecurity company said . The infection chain begins with a phishing email that masquerades as legitimate financial communications, urging recipients to confirm a recent bank transfer. Attached to the email is a ZIP archive that claims to contain additional details, but, instead, contains an ISO file that, when launched, mounts on the system as a virtual CD drive. The ISO image ("Под...
Hackers Exploit Webview2 to Deploy CoinLurker Malware and Evade Security Detection

Hackers Exploit Webview2 to Deploy CoinLurker Malware and Evade Security Detection

Dec 17, 2024 Malvertising / Cryptocurrency
Bogus software update lures are being used by threat actors to deliver a new stealer malware called CoinLurker . "Written in Go, CoinLurker employs cutting-edge obfuscation and anti-analysis techniques, making it a highly effective tool in modern cyber attacks," Morphisec researcher Nadav Lorber said in a technical report published Monday. The attacks make use of fake update alerts that employ various deceptive entry points such as software update notifications on compromised WordPress sites, malvertising redirects, phishing emails that link to spoofed update pages, fake CAPTCHA verification prompts , direct downloads from phoney or infected sites, and links shared via social media and messaging apps. Regardless of the method utilized to initiate the infection chain, the software update prompts make use of Microsoft Edge Webview2 to trigger the execution of the payload. "Webview2's dependency on pre-installed components and user interaction complicates dynami...

U.S. and Allies Warn of Iranian Cyberattacks on Critical Infrastructure in Year-Long Campaign

U.S. and Allies Warn of Iranian Cyberattacks on Critical Infrastructure in Year-Long Campaign

Oct 18, 2024 Cyber Intelligence / Critical Infrastructure
Cybersecurity and intelligence agencies from Australia, Canada, and the U.S. have warned about a year-long campaign undertaken by Iranian cyber actors to infiltrate critical infrastructure organizations via brute-force attacks. "Since October 2023, Iranian actors have used brute force and password spraying to compromise user accounts and obtain access to organizations in the healthcare and public health (HPH), government, information technology, engineering, and energy sectors," the agencies said in a joint advisory. The attacks have targeted healthcare, government, information technology, engineering, and energy sectors, per the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the Australian Signals Directorate's Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSE), the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the National Security Agency (NSA). Another notable tactic out...

Npm Trojan Bypasses UAC, Installs AnyDesk with "Oscompatible" Package

Jan 19, 2024 Software Security / Spyware
A malicious package uploaded to the npm registry has been found deploying a sophisticated remote access trojan on compromised Windows machines. The package, named " oscompatible ," was published on January 9, 2024, attracting a total of 380 downloads before it was taken down. oscompatible included a "few strange binaries," according to software supply chain security firm Phylum, including a single executable file, a dynamic-link library (DLL) and an encrypted DAT file, alongside a JavaScript file. This JavaScript file ("index.js") executes an "autorun.bat" batch script but only after running a compatibility check to determine if the target machine runs on Microsoft Windows. If the platform is not Windows, it displays an error message to the user, stating the script is running on Linux or an unrecognized operating system, urging them to run it on "Windows Server OS." The batch script, for its part, verifies if it has admin privil...
Charon Ransomware Hits Middle East Sectors Using APT-Level Evasion Tactics

Charon Ransomware Hits Middle East Sectors Using APT-Level Evasion Tactics

Aug 13, 2025 Endpoint Security / Cybercrime
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new campaign that employs a previously undocumented ransomware family called Charon to target the Middle East's public sector and aviation industry. The threat actor behind the activity, according to Trend Micro, exhibited tactics mirroring those of advanced persistent threat (APT) groups, such as DLL side-loading, process injection, and the ability to evade endpoint detection and response (EDR) software. The DLL side-loading techniques resemble those previously documented as part of attacks orchestrated by a China-linked hacking group called Earth Baxia , which was flagged by the cybersecurity company as targeting government entities in Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific region to deliver a backdoor known as EAGLEDOOR following the exploitation of a now-patched security flaw affecting OSGeo GeoServer GeoTools. "The attack chain leveraged a legitimate browser-related file, Edge.exe (originally named cookie_exporter.exe), to sideload a...
