Attacker Tried to Exploit Alpine Linux’s GitLab via CVSS 10.0 Flaw Its Ruby Left Open

Attacker Tried to Exploit Alpine Linux’s GitLab via CVSS 10.0 Flaw Its Ruby Left Open

Oct 29, 2026 Vulnerability / Cyber Attack
An attacker tried to exploit a critical GitLab vulnerability on the Alpine Linux project's own GitLab server a week after GitLab  released a fix , Alpine Linux  said  on 28 October. The flaw, CVE-2026-97229 (CVSS score: 10.0), can let an attacker run code on a GitLab server through a crafted regular expression in a CI configuration. Alpine found no evidence that the attack worked but cannot rule it out, so it rebuilt the server from scratch and reset every account's password. GitLab's fix  is a set of patches to the Ruby that GitLab ships in its own packages and container images. Alpine's GitLab image used standard Ruby, so upgrading the server to GitLab 19.3.6 on 22 October did not fix the flaw. For anyone running GitLab on their own Ruby, built from source or in their own container image, "upgrading GitLab is not enough," Alpine said. Those servers also need  Ruby 3.3.13, 3.4.12, 4.0.9 or later , and users of Alpine's alpinelinux/gitlab image...

Jul 04, 2025 Vulnerability / Linux
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed two security flaws in the Sudo command-line utility for Linux and Unix-like operating systems that could enable local attackers to escalate their privileges to root on susceptible machines. A brief description of the vulnerabilities is below - CVE-2025-32462 (CVSS score: 2.8) - Sudo before 1.9.17p1, when used with a sudoers file that specifies a host that is neither the current host nor ALL, allows listed users to execute commands on unintended machines CVE-2025-32463 (CVSS score: 9.3) - Sudo before 1.9.17p1 allows local users to obtain root access because " /etc/nsswitch.conf " from a user-controlled directory is used with the --chroot option Sudo is a command-line tool that allows low-privileged users to run commands as another user, such as the superuser. By executing instructions with sudo, the idea is to enforce the principle of least privilege, permitting users to carry out administrative actions without the need for el...

Urgent: Secret Backdoor Found in XZ Utils Library, Impacts Major Linux Distros

Mar 30, 2024 Linux / Supply Chain Attack
Red Hat on Friday released an "urgent security alert" warning that two versions of a popular data compression library called  XZ Utils  (previously LZMA Utils) have been backdoored with malicious code designed to allow unauthorized remote access. The software supply chain compromise, tracked as  CVE-2024-3094 , has a CVSS score of 10.0, indicating maximum severity. It impacts XZ Utils versions 5.6.0 (released February 24) and 5.6.1 (released March 9). "Through a series of complex obfuscations, the liblzma build process extracts a prebuilt object file from a disguised test file existing in the source code, which is then used to modify specific functions in the liblzma code," the IBM subsidiary  said  in an advisory. "This results in a modified liblzma library that can be used by any software linked against this library, intercepting and modifying the data interaction with this library." Specifically, the nefarious code baked into the code is  designed...

Looney Tunables: New Linux Flaw Enables Privilege Escalation on Major Distributions

Oct 04, 2023 Endpoint Security / Vulnerability
A new Linux security vulnerability dubbed Looney Tunables has been discovered in the GNU C library's ld.so dynamic loader that, if successfully exploited, could lead to a local privilege escalation and allow a threat actor to gain root privileges. Tracked as  CVE-2023-4911  (CVSS score: 7.8), the issue is a buffer overflow that resides in the dynamic loader's processing of the  GLIBC_TUNABLES environment variable . Cybersecurity firm Qualys, which  disclosed  details of the bug, said it was introduced as part of a code commit made in April 2021. The GNU C library, also called  glibc , is a core library in Linux-based systems that offers foundational features such as open, read, write, malloc, printf, getaddrinfo, dlopen, pthread_create, crypt, login, and exit. glibc's  dynamic loader  is a crucial component that's responsible for preparing and running programs, including finding the necessarily shared object dependencies required as well as l...

Mar 13, 2025 Open Source / Vulnerability
Meta has warned that a security vulnerability impacting the FreeType open-source font rendering library may have been exploited in the wild. The vulnerability has been assigned the CVE identifier CVE-2025-27363 , and carries a CVSS score of 8.1, indicating high severity. Described as an out-of-bounds write flaw, it could be exploited to achieve remote code execution when parsing certain font files. "An out-of-bounds write exists in FreeType versions 2.13.0 and below when attempting to parse font subglyph structures related to TrueType GX and variable font files," the company said in an advisory. "The vulnerable code assigns a signed short value to an unsigned long and then adds a static value causing it to wrap around and allocate too small of a heap buffer. The code then writes up to 6 signed long integers out of bounds relative to this buffer. This may result in arbitrary code execution." The company did not share any specifics on how the shortcoming is be...
New OVSwrap Linux Kernel Flaw Lets Local Users Gain Root via Open vSwitch

New OVSwrap Linux Kernel Flaw Lets Local Users Gain Root via Open vSwitch

Aug 05, 2026 Linux / Vulnerability
A memory corruption flaw in the Linux kernel's Open vSwitch datapath gives ordinary local users a path to root on a broad set of default-configured distributions, and a public exploit ships with pre-built records for roughly 800 kernel builds. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-64531 (CVSS score: 7.8) and codenamed OVSwrap by its discoverer, was disclosed by security researcher Asim Manizada on July 28, 2026. The bug sits in the kernel datapath, not the userspace ovs-vswitchd daemon. In a technical write-up , Manizada said an attacker needs "no existing OVS bridge, no running ovs-vswitchd, no host-level CAP_NET_ADMIN." On affected systems where the OVS kernel datapath is available and unprivileged user namespaces are enabled, an ordinary user can create private user and network namespaces with unshare -Urn, gain CAP_NET_ADMIN inside that namespace, and reach the vulnerable flow-installation path. If the openvswitch module is installed but not loaded, resolvi...
