Microsoft Fixes ASCII Smuggling Flaw That Enabled Data Theft from Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft Fixes ASCII Smuggling Flaw That Enabled Data Theft from Microsoft 365 Copilot

Aug 27, 2024 AI Security / Vulnerability
Details have emerged about a now-patched vulnerability in Microsoft 365 Copilot that could enable the theft of sensitive user information using a technique called ASCII smuggling. " ASCII Smuggling is a novel technique that uses special Unicode characters that mirror ASCII but are actually not visible in the user interface," security researcher Johann Rehberger said . "This means that an attacker can have the [large language model] render, to the user, invisible data, and embed them within clickable hyperlinks. This technique basically stages the data for exfiltration!" The entire attack strings together a number of attack methods to fashion them into a reliable exploit chain. This includes the following steps - Trigger prompt injection via malicious content concealed in a document shared on the chat to seize control of the chatbot Using a prompt injection payload to instruct Copilot to search for more emails and documents, a technique called automatic too...
Phishing Campaign Sends Millions of Emails Using Invisible Unicode to Evade Filters

Phishing Campaign Sends Millions of Emails Using Invisible Unicode to Evade Filters

Sep 04, 2026 Email Security / Artificial Intelligence
Microsoft is alerting of a "high-volume phishing campaign" that's using invisible Unicode tag characters to bypass email filters. "Instead of using these characters to hide instructions from people while exposing them to AI models, the attacker used them to split financial lure words such as 'funding' to prevent email filters from parsing them," the Microsoft Security Research team said . The Windows maker said the findings show AI-era evasion techniques can be adapted by threat actors in traditional phishing and spam campaigns. Attacks exploiting this approach are said to have first emerged in early February 2026. ASCII Smuggling refers to a technique where invisible or non-rendering Unicode characters are used to conceal messages or instructions inside seemingly-harmless text. As a result, human user interfaces do not render them, making the text appear completely normal to the user. However, such content can be ingested by email filters or AI...

Severe Framelink Figma MCP Vulnerability Lets Hackers Execute Code Remotely

Oct 08, 2025 Vulnerability / Software Security
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a now-patched vulnerability in the popular figma-developer-mcp Model Context Protocol ( MCP ) server that could allow attackers to achieve code execution. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2025-53967 (CVSS score: 7.5), is a command injection bug stemming from the unsanitized use of user input, opening the door to a scenario where an attacker can send arbitrary system commands. "The server constructs and executes shell commands using unvalidated user input directly within command-line strings. This introduces the possibility of shell metacharacter injection (|, >, &&, etc.)," according to a GitHub advisory for the flaw. "Successful exploitation can lead to remote code execution under the server process's privileges." Given that the Framelink Figma MCP server exposes various tools to perform operations in Figma using artificial intelligence (AI)-powered coding agents like Cursor, an attacker co...
