Spark RAT Targets Cambodia, Abuses Vulnerable OPSWAT Driver to Disable Security Tools

Spark RAT Targets Cambodia, Abuses Vulnerable OPSWAT Driver to Disable Security Tools

Aug 27, 2026 Malware / Vulnerability
Individuals and organizations in Cambodia have emerged as the target of a new campaign that delivers an open-source remote access trojan (RAT) called Spark RAT . "The samples employ diverse lure themes, suggesting an effort to appeal to a broad range of potential victims. These include government notices, public health materials, real estate-related content, and other topics," Acronis Threat Research Unit (TRU) researchers Darrel Virtusio and Subhajeet Singha said in an analysis published Wednesday. The multi-stage attack is notable for employing the bring your own vulnerable driver (BYOVD) technique to load a legitimate-but-vulnerable driver associated with OPSWAT AppRemover ("ardrv.sys") to escalate privileges and neutralize security software. Attack chains likely make use of targeting phishing emails to distribute compressed archives containing an Inno Setup executable and trick recipients into running it using wide-ranging lures, including Cambodian gove...
GoCaracal Malware Uses Ethereum Smart Contract to Fetch Replacement C2 Address

GoCaracal Malware Uses Ethereum Smart Contract to Fetch Replacement C2 Address

Aug 27, 2026 Malware / Phishing
Threat actors linked by Arctic Wolf to Dark Caracal with medium confidence deployed a previously undocumented Go-based malware framework, GoCaracal , during a June 2026 intrusion at an unnamed communications organization in Venezuela. GoCaracal provides operators with remote shell access and payload execution, while the extended profile adds browser data theft, keylogging, remote desktop control, and SOCKS5 proxying. Arctic Wolf also published a YARA rule and representative indicators of compromise (IoCs) that defenders can use to hunt for the malware. "We assess with medium confidence that this activity is linked to Dark Caracal," Arctic Wolf said. Arctic Wolf based the assessment on Bandook use, recurring Delphi-loader characteristics, Spanish-language financial lures, malicious SVGs, URL shorteners, document-themed infrastructure, hosting-provider preferences, and Latin American targeting. In its  technical analysis of GoCaracal , Arctic Wolf said the malware ap...
New GPUThor Rowhammer Defeats ECC on NVIDIA RTX A6000 to Gain Host Root Access

New GPUThor Rowhammer Defeats ECC on NVIDIA RTX A6000 to Gain Host Root Access

Aug 27, 2026 Hardware Security / Vulnerability
Academic researchers have disclosed a Rowhammer attack impacting NVIDIA workstation GPUs with GDDR6 memory that defeats error correction codes (ECC), the mitigation NVIDIA recommends against GPU Rowhammer, and enables denial-of-service (DoS) and privilege escalation to a root shell. Dubbed GPUThor , the attack was developed by researchers at the University of Toronto, who hammered four DRAM banks for 24 hours each on four Ampere-class cards, inducing bit flips on each. The following GPUs were tested and found vulnerable - RTX A6000 (48 GB GDDR6) RTX A5000 (24 GB GDDR6) RTX A4500 (20 GB GDDR6) RTX A4000 (16 GB GDDR6) Mounting the attack requires the ability to launch an unprivileged CUDA kernel on the target GPU, either as a co-tenant on a shared card or as untrusted code on a single-tenant machine. The researchers advise avoiding cross-tenant GPU sharing, monitoring ECC error counters, and restricting untrusted CUDA workloads. "Recently, researchers at the U...

FBI Disrupts China-Linked QTFY Infrastructure Used to Steal Data From U.S. Organizations

Aug 26, 2026 Cyber Espionage / Critical Infrastructure
The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) on Wednesday announced the disruption of two hacking platforms named QScan and QTRouter operated by Chinese threat actors to target critical infrastructure and other sensitive networks in the country. The activity has been attributed to a Chinese state-sponsored group known as QTFY, employed by Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Technology Company (南京鑫玖维网络科技有限公司).  "Among the targets of QTFY are the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Federal Reserve, Department of Energy, Department of Justice, Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Senate," DoJ said. Damon Rouse, a security researcher at Lumen Black Lotus Labs who has been tracking the activity for over the past 18 months, told The Hacker News that the digital quartermaster has been active since May 2018. Nanjing counts both China's Ministry of State Security (MSS) and the People's Liberation Army (PLA) among its customers. ...

Nimbus Manticore Expands Toolset With TWOSTROKE-Like Backdoor and SSH Tunneler

Aug 26, 2026 Malware / Cyber Espionage
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered additional infrastructure and previously undocumented malware associated with Nimbus Manticore , an Iranian state-sponsored hacking group affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Group-IB, in a new analysis published today, described the cyber espionage actor as among the most active Iranian APT groups in 2026. Nimbus Manticore (aka GalaxyGato, Mirage Kitten, Screening Serpens, Smoke Sandstorm, Subtle Snail, and UNC1549) is assessed to be linked to Tortoiseshell (aka Imperial Kitten and Unyielding Wasp), which is part of the Charming Kitten (aka Eclipsed Wasp) cluster. Tortoiseshell is known to be active since at least July 2018, mainly targeting defense, aerospace, IT service providers, and military organizations in the Middle East and the U.S. Nimbus Manticore also has a history of orchestrating its own version of the Dream Job campaign to deliver malware under the pretext of job opportunity-themed social engine...
NovaCookies Campaigns Abuse Genuine Docusign Notifications to Steal Microsoft 365 Sessions

NovaCookies Campaigns Abuse Genuine Docusign Notifications to Steal Microsoft 365 Sessions

Aug 26, 2026 Phishing / Identity Security
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a new adversary-in-the-middle ( AitM ) phishing toolkit called NovaCookies that's used as a proxy to redirect Microsoft 365 sign-ins, while capturing authenticated sessions in the process. In a report shared with The Hacker News ahead of publication, Island characterized the $320/month service as a subscription-based phishing platform that facilitates real-time Microsoft 365 session theft. The kit has been used to target hundreds of organizations across multiple sectors in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Germany, Israel, and the U.A.E. to date.  "Observed campaigns used genuine Docusign envelopes to carry counterfeit document-share lures, with some clicks routed through legitimate Microsoft or Google sign-in endpoints as redirect hops before reaching the kit," Island said. "The message, document service and redirect can therefore appear trustworthy until the browser reaches attacker-controlled infrastructure....
