New EDDIESTEALER Malware Bypasses Chrome's App-Bound Encryption to Steal Browser Data

New EDDIESTEALER Malware Bypasses Chrome's App-Bound Encryption to Steal Browser Data

May 30, 2025 Browser Security / Malware
A new malware campaign is distributing a novel Rust-based information stealer dubbed EDDIESTEALER using the popular ClickFix social engineering tactic initiated via fake CAPTCHA verification pages. "This campaign leverages deceptive CAPTCHA verification pages that trick users into executing a malicious PowerShell script, which ultimately deploys the infostealer, harvesting sensitive data such as credentials, browser information, and cryptocurrency wallet details," Elastic Security Labs researcher Jia Yu Chan said in an analysis. The attack chains begin with threat actors compromising legitimate websites with malicious JavaScript payloads that serve bogus CAPTCHA check pages, which prompt site visitors to "prove you are not [a] robot" by following a three-step process, a prevalent tactic called ClickFix . This involves instructing the potential victim to open the Windows Run dialog prompt, paste an already copied command into the "verification window"...
China-Linked Hackers Exploit SAP and SQL Server Flaws in Attacks Across Asia and Brazil

China-Linked Hackers Exploit SAP and SQL Server Flaws in Attacks Across Asia and Brazil

May 30, 2025 Vulnerability / Threat Intelligence
The China-linked threat actor behind the recent in-the-wild exploitation of a critical security flaw in SAP NetWeaver has been attributed to a broader set of attacks targeting organizations in Brazil, India, and Southeast Asia since 2023. "The threat actor mainly targets the SQL injection vulnerabilities discovered on web applications to access the SQL servers of targeted organizations," Trend Micro security researcher Joseph C Chen said in an analysis published this week. "The actor also takes advantage of various known vulnerabilities to exploit public-facing servers." Some of the other prominent targets of the adversarial collective include Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. The cybersecurity company is tracking the intrusion set under the moniker Earth Lamia , stating the activity shares some degree of overlap with threat clusters documented by Elastic Security Labs as REF0657 , Sophos as STAC6451 , and Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 a...
From the "Department of No" to a "Culture of Yes": A Healthcare CISO's Journey to Enabling Modern Care

From the "Department of No" to a "Culture of Yes": A Healthcare CISO's Journey to Enabling Modern Care

May 30, 2025 Healthcare / Zero Trust
Breaking Out of the Security Mosh Pit When Jason Elrod, CISO of MultiCare Health System, describes legacy healthcare IT environments, he doesn't mince words: "Healthcare loves to walk backwards into the future. And this is how we got here, because there are a lot of things that we could have prepared for that we didn't, because we were so concentrated on where we were." This chaotic approach has characterized healthcare IT for decades. In a sector where lives depend on technology working flawlessly 24/7/365, security teams have traditionally functioned as gatekeepers—the “Department of No”—focused on protection at the expense of innovation and care delivery. But as healthcare continues its digital transformation journey, this approach is no longer sustainable. With 14 hospitals, hundreds of urgent care clinics, and nearly 30,000 employees serving millions of patients, MultiCare needed a different path forward – one that didn’t sacrifice innovation for safety. That...

U.S. Sanctions Funnull for $200M Romance Baiting Scams Tied to Crypto Fraud

U.S. Sanctions Funnull for $200M Romance Baiting Scams Tied to Crypto Fraud

May 30, 2025 Cryptocurrency / Cybercrime
The U.S. Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has levied sanctions against a Philippines-based company named Funnull Technology Inc. and its administrator Liu Lizhi for providing infrastructure to conduct romance baiting scams that led to massive cryptocurrency losses. The Treasury accused the Taguig-headquartered company of enabling thousands of websites involved in virtual currency investment scams that caused Americans to lose billions of dollars annually. "Funnull has directly facilitated several of these schemes, resulting in over $200 million in U.S. victim-reported losses," the agency said in a press release. The average loss is estimated to be over $150,000 per individual. Funnull, also called Fang Neng CDN (funnull[.]io, funnull[.]com, funnull[.]app, and funnull[.]buzz), first attracted the attention of the cybersecurity community in June 2024 after it was implicated in the supply chain attack of the widely-used Polyfill[.]io J...
ConnectWise Hit by Cyberattack; Nation-State Actor Suspected in Targeted Breach

ConnectWise Hit by Cyberattack; Nation-State Actor Suspected in Targeted Breach

May 30, 2025 Vulnerability / Data Breach
ConnectWise, the developer of remote access and support software ScreenConnect, has disclosed that it was the victim of a cyber attack that it said was likely perpetrated by a nation-state threat actor. "ConnectWise recently learned of suspicious activity within our environment that we believe was tied to a sophisticated nation-state actor, which affected a very small number of ScreenConnect customers," the company said in a brief advisory on May 28, 2025. The company said it has engaged the services of Google Mandiant to conduct a forensic probe into the incident and that it has notified all affected customers. The incident was first reported by CRN. However, it did not reveal the exact number of customers who were impacted by the hack, when it happened, or the identity of the threat actor behind it. It's worth noting that the company, in late April 2025, patched CVE-2025-3935 (CVSS score: 8.1), a high-severity vulnerability in ScreenConnect versions 25.2.3 and ea...
Meta Disrupts Influence Ops Targeting Romania, Azerbaijan, and Taiwan with Fake Personas

Meta Disrupts Influence Ops Targeting Romania, Azerbaijan, and Taiwan with Fake Personas

May 30, 2025 Artificial Intelligence / Disinformation
Meta on Thursday revealed that it disrupted three covert influence operations originating from Iran, China, and Romania during the first quarter of 2025. "We detected and removed these campaigns before they were able to build authentic audiences on our apps," the social media giant said in its quarterly Adversarial Threat Report. This included a network of 658 accounts on Facebook, 14 Pages, and two accounts on Instagram that targeted Romania across several platforms, including Meta's services, TikTok, X, and YouTube. One of the pages in question had about 18,300 followers. The threat actors behind the activity leveraged fake accounts to manage Facebook Pages, direct users to off-platform websites, and share comments on posts by politicians and news entities. The accounts masqueraded as locals living in Romania and posted content related to sports, travel, or local news. While a majority of these comments did not receive any engagement from authentic audiences, Met...
Cybercriminals Target AI Users with Malware-Loaded Installers Posing as Popular Tools

Cybercriminals Target AI Users with Malware-Loaded Installers Posing as Popular Tools

May 29, 2025 Artificial Intelligence / Cybercrime
Fake installers for popular artificial intelligence (AI) tools like OpenAI ChatGPT and InVideo AI are being used as lures to propagate various threats, such as the CyberLock and Lucky_Gh0$t ransomware families, and a new malware dubbed Numero. "CyberLock ransomware, developed using PowerShell, primarily focuses on encrypting specific files on the victim's system," Cisco Talos researcher Chetan Raghuprasad said in a report published today. "Lucky_Gh0$t ransomware is yet another variant of the Yashma ransomware, which is the sixth iteration of the Chaos ransomware series, featuring only minor modifications to the ransomware binary." Numero, on the other hand, is a destructive malware that impacts victims by manipulating the graphical user interface (GUI) components of their Windows operating system, thereby rendering the machines unusable. The cybersecurity company said the legitimate versions of the AI tools are popular in the business-to-business (B2B) sal...
