Microsoft Patches 61 Flaws, Including Two Actively Exploited Zero-Days

May 15, 2024 Patch Tuesday / Vulnerability
Microsoft has addressed a total of  61 new security flaws  in its software as part of its Patch Tuesday updates for May 2024, including two zero-days which have been actively exploited in the wild. Of the 61 flaws, one is rated Critical, 59 are rated Important, and one is rated Moderate in severity. This is in addition to  30 vulnerabilities  resolved in the Chromium-based Edge browser over the past month, including two recently disclosed zero-days ( CVE-2024-4671  and  CVE-2024-4761 ) that have been tagged as exploited in attacks. The two security shortcomings that have been weaponized in the wild are below - CVE-2024-30040  (CVSS score: 8.8) - Windows MSHTML Platform Security Feature Bypass Vulnerability CVE-2024-30051  (CVSS score: 7.8) - Windows Desktop Window Manager ( DWM ) Core Library Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability "An unauthenticated attacker who successfully exploi...
VMware Patches Severe Security Flaws in Workstation and Fusion Products

VMware Patches Severe Security Flaws in Workstation and Fusion Products

May 14, 2024 Bluetooth / Vulnerability
Multiple security flaws have been  disclosed  in VMware Workstation and Fusion products that could be exploited by threat actors to access sensitive information, trigger a denial-of-service (DoS) condition, and execute code under certain circumstances. The four vulnerabilities impact Workstation versions 17.x and Fusion versions 13.x, with fixes available in version 17.5.2 and 13.5.2, respectively, the Broadcom-owned virtualization services provider said. A brief description of each of the flaws is below - CVE-2024-22267  (CVSS score: 9.3) - A use-after-free vulnerability in the Bluetooth device that could be exploited by a malicious actor with local administrative privileges on a virtual machine to execute code as the virtual machine's VMX process running on the host CVE-2024-22268  (CVSS score: 7.1) - A heap buffer-overflow vulnerability in the Shader functionality that could be exploited by a malicious actor with non-administrative access to a virtua...
New Chrome Zero-Day Vulnerability CVE-2024-4761 Under Active Exploitation

New Chrome Zero-Day Vulnerability CVE-2024-4761 Under Active Exploitation

May 14, 2024 Vulnerability / Zero Day
Google on Monday shipped emergency fixes to address a new zero-day flaw in the Chrome web browser that has come under active exploitation in the wild. The high-severity vulnerability, tracked as  CVE-2024-4761 , is an out-of-bounds write bug impacting the V8 JavaScript and WebAssembly engine. It was reported anonymously on May 9, 2024. Out-of-bounds write bugs  could be typically exploited by malicious actors to corrupt data, or induce a crash or execute arbitrary code on compromised hosts. "Google is aware that an exploit for CVE-2024-4761 exists in the wild," the tech giant  said . Additional details about the nature of the attacks have been withheld to prevent more threat actors from weaponizing the flaw. The disclosure comes merely days after the company patched  CVE-2024-4671 , a use-after-free vulnerability in the Visuals component that has also been exploited in real-world attacks. With the latest fix, Google has...

Critical Flaws in Cacti Framework Could Let Attackers Execute Malicious Code

May 14, 2024 Network Monitoring / Vulnerability
The maintainers of the  Cacti  open-source network monitoring and fault management framework have addressed a dozen security flaws, including two critical issues that could lead to the execution of arbitrary code. The most severe of the vulnerabilities are listed below - CVE-2024-25641  (CVSS score: 9.1) - An arbitrary file write vulnerability in the "Package Import" feature that allows authenticated users having the "Import Templates" permission to execute arbitrary PHP code on the web server, resulting in remote code execution CVE-2024-29895  (CVSS score: 10.0) - A command injection vulnerability allows any unauthenticated user to execute arbitrary command on the server when the " register_argc_argv " option of PHP is On Also addressed by Cacti are two other high-severity flaws that could lead to code execution via SQL injection and file inclusion - CVE-2024-31445  (CVSS score: 8.8) - An SQL injection vulnerability in api_automation.php that ...
6 Mistakes Organizations Make When Deploying Advanced Authentication

6 Mistakes Organizations Make When Deploying Advanced Authentication

May 14, 2024 Cyber Threat / Machine Learning
Deploying advanced authentication measures is key to helping organizations address their weakest cybersecurity link: their human users. Having some form of 2-factor authentication in place is a great start, but many organizations may not yet be in that spot or have the needed level of authentication sophistication to adequately safeguard organizational data. When deploying advanced authentication measures, organizations can make mistakes, and it is crucial to be aware of these potential pitfalls.  1. Failing to conduct a risk assessment A comprehensive risk assessment is a vital first step to any authentication implementation. An organization leaves itself open to risk if it fails to assess current threats and vulnerabilities, systems and processes or needed level of protections required for different applications and data.  Not all applications demand the same levels of security. For example, an application that handl...
