Mustang Panda Adds Signed Windows Rootkit to CoolClient Backdoor for Stealth

Mustang Panda Adds Signed Windows Rootkit to CoolClient Backdoor for Stealth

Aug 14, 2026 Malware / Threat Intelligence
The threat actor known as HoneyMyte (aka  Mustang Panda ) has been observed deploying an updated version of the CoolClient backdoor with a signed Windows kernel-mode rootkit that can hide and protect malicious processes, files, registry objects, and command-and-control (C2) network information. Russian cybersecurity vendor Kaspersky said it identified victims in Myanmar, Mongolia, Pakistan, and Russia, including confirmed government entities, with CoolClient consistently deployed as a secondary backdoor following a  PlugX  infection. The kernel component is deployed when CoolClient has full access to the Service Control Manager (SCM) and the SeTcbPrivilege privilege. If those conditions are not met, the malware skips driver deployment and proceeds to the final-stage implant. Kaspersky has also published file hashes, paths, and C2 domains as indicators of compromise (IoCs). "Our analysis confirms that the investigated malware is a new CoolClient variant ...
Chrome DevTools Technique Enables Authenticated Session Hijacking in Live Windows Browsers

Chrome DevTools Technique Enables Authenticated Session Hijacking in Live Windows Browsers

Aug 14, 2026 Browser Security / Endpoint Security
Cybersecurity researchers have detailed a post-exploitation technique that enables the  Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP)  inside a running Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge process on Windows, allowing an operator to access cookies, saved data, and authenticated browser sessions. The technique assumes that an operator already has code execution on the Windows host and does not involve exploiting a Chrome or Edge security vulnerability. The requirement for prior code execution and sufficient access to manipulate the target process places the technique in a narrower post-compromise scenario than a remotely exploitable browser flaw. SpecterOps said defenders can look for signs of process injection targeting chrome.exe and msedge.exe using Sysmon Event IDs 8 and 10. "Since App-Bound Encryption was enabled, we've seen an increase in attackers using Chrome Remote Debugging to extract cookies," Google said in a  March 2025 post . Google  changed C...

CTM360 Uncovers Over 3,000 Recruitment Phishing URLs Using Browser-in-the-Browser (BitB) Credential Traps

Aug 14, 2026 United States
Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a large-scale, global recruitment-themed phishing campaign that uses fake interview scheduling pages and Browser-in-the-Browser (BitB) windows to steal Google and Facebook credentials and, in more advanced cases, relay multi-factor authentication (MFA) prompts in real time. CTM360, which detailed the activity in a new report titled RecruitTrap , said it identified more than 3,000+ phishing URLs over two months. The campaign impersonated real recruiters and recruitment processes associated with more than 50 organizations across 14 sectors . Marketing professionals accounted for the majority of observed targets. The focus on marketing roles appears deliberate. Compromised marketing accounts can provide access to advertising platforms, corporate social media profiles, customer data, email, and other business-critical services. Apple Warns Users in 110 Countries They May Be Targets of Mercenary Spyware

Apple Warns Users in 110 Countries They May Be Targets of Mercenary Spyware

Aug 14, 2026 Spyware / Cyber Espionage
Apple on Thursday sent a fresh batch of notifications to customers whom it suspects may have been targeted by mercenary spyware attacks. In a statement shared with TechCrunch, the iPhone maker said it alerted an unspecified number of users targeted in 110 countries and that it has notified customers in over 150 countries to date. Apple began sending threat notifications to users in late 2021. "The extreme cost, sophistication, and worldwide nature of mercenary spyware attacks make them some of the most advanced digital threats in existence today," the tech giant said . "As a result, Apple does not attribute the attacks or resulting threat notifications to any specific attackers or geographical regions." Typically, such notifications are sent to people who may have been individually targeted because of "who they are or what they do," including journalists, activists, politicians, and diplomats. They tend to focus on a very small number of speci...
Trump Memo Paves Way for U.S. Firms to Hack and Disrupt Foreign Crime Groups

Trump Memo Paves Way for U.S. Firms to Hack and Disrupt Foreign Crime Groups

Aug 14, 2026 Cybercrime / Offensive Operation
A new White House memo signed by U.S. President Donald Trump has instructed the National Coordination Center (NCC) to establish a program that would allow private sector companies to take advantage of their "innovative capabilities" to break into foreign Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs) and disrupt them. "By partnering with vetted United States companies subject to the direction and oversight of the Federal Government, we will enhance our ability to counter TCO threats and combat transnational cybercrime, fraud, and other predatory schemes against American citizens," the memo reads . To that end, the NCC has been tasked with setting up a program that allows authorized companies to conduct two types of operations against TCOs upon obtaining approval: cyber surveillance operations, which can access sensitive data without authorization from the owner or operator, and cyber effects operations, which can result in disruption, denial, degradation, or destr...
China-Linked Jewelbug Uses XG-Web for Government Espionage and Crypto Fraud

China-Linked Jewelbug Uses XG-Web for Government Espionage and Crypto Fraud

Aug 14, 2026 United States
The China-linked threat actor known as Jewelbug has been observed carrying out cyber espionage operations targeting governments and militaries, while simultaneously engaging in cryptocurrency fraud. "Both missions are administered from a single control panel, XG-Web , a browser-centric remote-access and information-stealing framework that turns a victim's browser into a full remote-control channel and reaches from there into the host and the internal network behind it," Broadcom's Symantec and Carbon Black Threat Hunter Team said . Jewelbug is assessed to be a China-based hackers-for-hire group that runs parallel operations, including espionage against governments and militaries across the Middle East, Southeast Asia and South Asia, and a for-profit cryptocurrency fraud business. "The group has developed five generations of command-and-control (C&C) code and a family of implants spanning browsers, Windows endpoints, Linux servers and network devices,...

Unpatched GeoServer Zero-Day Targeted in Active Exploitation Attempts, Can Lead to RCE

Aug 13, 2026 Zero-Day / Vulnerability
A newly disclosed zero-day flaw in GeoServer is seeing active exploitation efforts, per watchTowr. The vulnerability, which has yet to be assigned a CVE identifier, is an SQL injection vulnerability in the open-source platform that can lead to remote code execution (RCE). The security defect remains unpatched. It was first disclosed on August 12, 2026, at 10:46 UTC, by a researcher named @q1uf3ng on X. "GeoServer jsonArrayContains unauthorized SQL injection, and in the case of the sa [system administrator] database, it's naturally possible to achieve RCE," the researcher said. The threat intelligence and exposure management platform said it began to observe exploitation attempts within hours of public disclosure, and that it has seen hundreds of attempts originating from a small pool of IP addresses.  "Currently, we're seeing attackers probe to identify vulnerable systems across the internet, triggering errors and not proceeding further," Jake Knot...

New PATCHCORD Backdoor Targets Afghan Telecom and Indian Critical Infrastructure

New PATCHCORD Backdoor Targets Afghan Telecom and Indian Critical Infrastructure

Aug 13, 2026 Cyber Espionage / Critical Infrastructure
Afghan telecom providers and South Asian critical infrastructure organizations have emerged as the target of a new ongoing campaign that delivers a previously undocumented backdoor called PATCHCORD . According to Acronis Threat Research Unit (TRU) , the backdoor is a compiled C/C++ implant delivered by means of sector-specific lures, including fake VPN installers impersonating Afghan Telecom (AFTEL) and telecom management tools. An analysis of the threat actor's infrastructure has also led to the discovery of another Go-based backdoor dubbed SHEETCORD that uses Google Sheets for command-and-control (C2) communications. The malware has been found to be delivered via a domain impersonating India's National Informatics Center (NIC). "The campaign's infrastructure centers on a single C2 server with multiple associated domains, including domains impersonating Afghan telecom operators and a hijacked legitimate healthcare domain," researchers Darrel Virtusio, San...
AmnesiaStealer Hijacks Chromium Sessions to Give Attackers Live Browser Control on macOS

AmnesiaStealer Hijacks Chromium Sessions to Give Attackers Live Browser Control on macOS

Aug 13, 2026 Malware / Vulnerability
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a new macOS-oriented, Rust-based information stealer called AmnesiaStealer that's capable of hijacking Chromium web browsers to steal session data. The multi-stage stealer is spread via a counterfeit GitHub download page titled "Download for macOS" and claims to be from a verified publisher. The page employs a ClickFix-style lure that instructs users to copy and paste a Base64-encoded command into the macOS Terminal app. The attack chain ultimately leads to the deployment of AmnesiaStealer via a dropper script hosted on a remote server, which, according to Jamf Threat Labs , runs in three distinct stages. "The first is a shell script that downloads and launches the payload," security researcher Thijs Xhaflaire said in a report shared with The Hacker News. "The second is a Rust infostealer that harvests the Keychain, browsers, Apple Notes, and Telegram. The third is a stream_module, fetched on comm...
WindRelay Android Malware Turns Victims' Phones Into NFC Relays for Payment Fraud

WindRelay Android Malware Turns Victims' Phones Into NFC Relays for Payment Fraud

Aug 13, 2026 Malware / Mobile Security
A previously unseen Android near field communication ( NFC ) relay malware family dubbed WindRelay is being deployed in conjunction with a known remote access trojan (RAT) called SpyNote as part of a contactless payment fraud scheme. The purpose-built malware, according to Group-IB, is designed to capture live card data via NFC and transmit it to fraudsters in real time. It was first detected in the wild in late August 2025. "SpyNote's Accessibility Service access lets the fraudster sideload and activate the NFC app silently, with no screen sharing ever triggered," researchers Alexander Grabko, Konstantinos Angelopoulos, Pavlos Gaitanis, and Bruno Bijelić said .  These attacks typically work by luring prospective targets via phishing, smishing, or vishing scams into sideloading a malicious app. Once installed, the threat actor abuses SpyNote's remote access to install the NFC relay malware without any further user interaction. To lend credibility to the sch...
North Korean Remote Workers Are Infiltrating Government and Businesses: How to Expose Them Before Hiring

North Korean Remote Workers Are Infiltrating Government and Businesses: How to Expose Them Before Hiring

Aug 13, 2026 Cyber Espionage / Threat Intelligence
Companies are used to thinking about attackers as outsiders trying to break in. North Korean IT workers flip that model. They apply for jobs, pass interviews, receive legitimate credentials, and can end up inside the same systems companies spend millions trying to protect. That risk is no longer theoretical. The FBI is now investigating a North Korean remote IT worker who reportedly worked for a U.S. federal agency. For CISOs, the priority is clear: spot the warning signs before a fraudulent hire becomes trusted access. When the Threat Gets Hired A recent joint investigation by Mauro Eldritch ( BCA LTD ), Heiner García ( NorthScan ), and ANY.RUN showed what this looks like from inside the operation. Researchers deliberately hired suspected DPRK developers linked to Lazarus Group and gave them what looked like ordinary virtual desktops. In reality, they were controlled ANY.RUN Sandboxes, capturing their activity in real time. The operation exposed forged identities, re...

Attackers Exploit SharePoint Authentication Bypass After Public PoC Release

Aug 13, 2026 Vulnerability / Enterprise Security
Threat actors have begun to exploit a newly disclosed Microsoft SharePoint vulnerability following the release of a proof-of-concept (PoC) code. The vulnerability in question is CVE-2026-55040 (CVSS score: 9.1), which refers to a critical security feature bypass that stems from weak authentication. It was patched by Microsoft as part of its July 2026 Patch Tuesday updates. "The authentication feature could be bypassed as this vulnerability allows impersonation," Microsoft said in an advisory for the flaw last month. "Exploiting this vulnerability could allow an attacker to disclose files and modify data, but the attacker cannot impact the availability of the system." According to Defused Cyber , threat actors are leveraging a PoC exploit released by Rapid7 earlier this week, once again indicating fresh flaws are being rapidly abused in real-world attacks. It's worth mentioning that CVE-2026-55040 is the fifth SharePoint vulnerability to be exploited t...

Lazarus Exploits Windows Zero-Day to Gain SYSTEM Access and Deploy Backdoor

Aug 12, 2026 Vulnerability / Cyber Espionage
The North Korean threat actor known as Lazarus Group has been attributed to the zero-day exploitation of a newly patched security flaw impacting Microsoft Windows to deliver a never-before-seen backdoor targeting defense and aerospace companies across France, Germany, Brazil, and India. The activity, per Check Point Research, is part of Operation Dream Job , a long-running cyber espionage and social engineering campaign orchestrated by Pyongyang-backed hackers to target professionals worldwide with fake-but-compelling job offers at firms like Lockheed Martin and Enveil to steal sensitive data and install malware by approaching them on platforms like LinkedIn, pretending to be recruiters in an attempt to build trust. The attacks have been found to exploit CVE-2026-68820 (CVSS score: 7.0), a privilege escalation flaw affecting Windows Ancillary Function Driver for WinSock ("AFD.sys") that was patched by Microsoft as part of its Patch Tuesday updates for August 2026. 737 Chrome VPN Extensions Caught Routing Traffic Through Proxies. Check If You Have One

Aug 12, 2026 Browser Security / Privacy
A massive set of 737 free VPN and proxy extensions have been found to mainly target Russian-speaking users seeking access to blocked services with an aim to intercept browser traffic and route them through a proxy infrastructure. The extensions, published across at least 40 Chrome Web Store developer accounts, racked up 75,486 installs. Of those identified, 274 have been found to impersonate 66 established VPN and privacy brands, including Proton VPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, AdGuard VPN, Browsec, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost, Windscribe, TunnelBear, Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1, and Google's Outline, per Socket. The censorship circumvention extensions "route the user's entire browser session through SOCKS5 proxies operated by a single provider," security researcher Kush Pandya said . "520 of the 522 in the bulk corpus route browser traffic through the same SOCKS5 infrastructure." The vast majority of the extensions have been found to route users' entire browser...
