Cyanogen Shutting Down All Services; No More Android ROM Updates

Dec 26, 2016
A bittersweet Christmas and New Year for users and fans of the most popular custom Android ROM, Cyanogen OS. Cyanogen that tried and failed to kill Google's Android operating system is now shutting down the custom services that it provides to phones that run its Cyanogen OS as we know it and the "nightly builds" of said OS on December 31st. Cyanogen came with an ambition to build better versions of the Android operating system than those created by Google itself, but following some technical and potential legal issues, the startup has decided to quit. The planned shutdown of Cyanogen was officially announced late Friday through a very brief blog post made by the company, saying "as part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen," it's shutting down all services and nightly builds on December 31. "The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally," the blog reads. What

Warning: Millions of Xiaomi Phones Vulnerable to Remote Hacking

Jul 12, 2016
Millions of Xiaomi smartphones are vulnerable to a dangerous remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability that could grant attackers complete control of handsets. The vulnerability, now patched, exists in MIUI – Xiaomi's own implementation of the Android operating system – in versions prior to MIUI Global Stable 7.2 which is based on Android 6.0. The flaw, discovered by IBM X-Force researcher David Kaplan, potentially allows attackers with privileged network access, such as cafe Wi-Fi, to install malware remotely on the affected devices and fully compromise them. Researchers found some apps in the analytics package in MIUI, which can be abused to provide malicious ROM updates remotely through a man-in-the-middle attack. " The vulnerability we discovered allows for a man-in-the-middle attacker to execute arbitrary code as the highly privileged Android 'system' user, " researchers say. Researchers say they discovered vulnerable analytics packages in at lea

The Secret Weakness Execs Are Overlooking: Non-Human Identities

Oct 03, 2024Enterprise Security / Cloud Security
For years, securing a company's systems was synonymous with securing its "perimeter." There was what was safe "inside" and the unsafe outside world. We built sturdy firewalls and deployed sophisticated detection systems, confident that keeping the barbarians outside the walls kept our data and systems safe. The problem is that we no longer operate within the confines of physical on-prem installations and controlled networks. Data and applications now reside in distributed cloud environments and data centers, accessed by users and devices connecting from anywhere on the planet. The walls have crumbled, and the perimeter has dissolved, opening the door to a new battlefield: identity . Identity is at the center of what the industry has praised as the new gold standard of enterprise security: "zero trust." In this paradigm, explicit trust becomes mandatory for any interactions between systems, and no implicit trust shall subsist. Every access request, regardless of its origin,

How to Run Android on your iPhone using this 3D Printed Phone Case

Hackers and geeks always tinkered with their devices, regardless of their operating system, and are always behind the ways to run Android on iPhone, iOS on Android phones, or Dual-Boot iOS and Android together in a single device. Though there are many solutions available on the Internet to solve these queries, but recently a hardware hacker has demonstrated a new way to run Android OS virtually on iPhone within an app i.e. without booting the iOS device. Nick Lee, the CTO of mobile development firm Tendigi, has created a specialized iPhone case, that when connected to your iPhone, will let your iPhone run a full-fledged version of Android operating system. This hack is not the first weird thing Lee did; he previously was able to get his Apple Watch to run Windows 95. Lee showed how everything from WiFi to the Google Play Store to the calculator app worked fine. To run Android on iPhone, Lee first cloned the Android Open Source Project and built his own version of Android M

The wait is over as the popular Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus has finally released its own custom ROM --  OnePlus OxygenOS , which is based on Android 5.0 Lollipop. Last month, the OnePlus announced the official release of its in-house OxygenOS to 'One' on or before March 27, but was failed to deliver the update due to a couple of security issues discovered in the update. The news disappointed many OnePlus customers, including me, who were looking forward to their Lollipop updates. However, the update is now ready for downloading from the OnePlus servers. Also, a full installation guide has been provided for customers who want to switch from the CyanogenMod 11S to the latest OxygenOS.
