DeadLock Ransomware Uses Polygon Smart Contracts to Make Extortion Infra Harder to Disrupt

DeadLock Ransomware Uses Polygon Smart Contracts to Make Extortion Infra Harder to Disrupt

Aug 11, 2026 Ransomware / Blockchain
The ransomware group known as DeadLock has been observed using decentralized infrastructure to facilitate victim communications and data leak operations in a bid to improve operational resilience. "Its recovery ecosystem combines the Session messaging network with blockchain-backed services that store and deliver resources used throughout the extortion process," the Microsoft Threat Intelligence team said . The tech giant said it observed the ransomware being deployed by multiple threat actors, including an affiliate for Lynx and INC ransomware. DeadLock was first detected in July 2025, employing double extortion tactics to encrypt victim environments and apply pressure by threatening to publicly release exfiltrated data. As of this month, the group has claimed 96 victims , with most of them located in Italy, Spain, Poland, Türkiye, and the U.S. In an analysis published earlier this January, Singapore-headquartered Group-IB said the group has managed to keep a lowe...
Malicious MCP Servers Can Split Instructions to Make AI Coding Agents Exfiltrate Secrets

Malicious MCP Servers Can Split Instructions to Make AI Coding Agents Exfiltrate Secrets

Aug 11, 2026 AI Security / Cyber Attack
A malicious tool server connected to an AI coding assistant can quietly walk off with SSH keys, environment secrets, source code, and customer data without ever sending one obviously harmful instruction. The trick can work even after a blunt version of the same theft is refused: split the request into fragments that each look routine, place them in channels the assistant already uses, and let the agent stitch them together and send the data back. The attack targets coding tools that connect to outside servers over the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open standard that lets AI assistants call external tools. A malicious MCP server can put one fragment in a tool description and another in a tool result; some setups also support server-initiated sampling. MCP does preserve structured tool and result boundaries. But ASSET Research Group's tests show agents can still combine instructions across them in the same working context, so no single fragment has to contain the whole mal...
Atlassian Rovo Can Be Tricked Into Sending Jira and Confluence Data to Attackers

Atlassian Rovo Can Be Tricked Into Sending Jira and Confluence Data to Attackers

Aug 08, 2026 AI Security / Enterprise Security
Attacker-controlled instructions can make Atlassian's Rovo assistant collect Jira or Confluence data that a signed-in user can access, then send it to an outside server. Two security firms found that behavior independently, by different routes. Only one of those routes is confirmed closed. PromptArmor , an AI security firm, hid the instructions in content Rovo reads. It said an uploaded file was enough to make the assistant gather internal data and send it out through a URL request, with no separate approval step. The firm published on August 5, 2026 and said the chain still worked with Rovo's web-search option switched off. That bypass is single-sourced, and the report establishes the finding's status only on that date; a later remediation is not confirmed here. Varonis Threat Labs put the instructions in a link instead. It found that the rovoChatPrompt URL parameter would preload attacker instructions into Rovo Chat, so one click from an authenticated user was enou...

Metabase Zero-Day Exploited in Wild Allows Admin Access Without Authentication

Metabase Zero-Day Exploited in Wild Allows Admin Access Without Authentication

Aug 08, 2026 Zero-Day / Vulnerability
Metabase has warned that a maximum-severity security flaw impacting its business intelligence and data visualization software package has been exploited in the wild as a zero-day. The vulnerability (CVSS score: 10.0), which does not carry a CVE identifier, allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to inject arbitrary SQL into the Metabase application database, enabling them to gain administrator access to the instance. Armed with the elevated access, the attacker can change the application configuration, steal stored credentials for the connected databases, read any data accessible through those connections, and export data. "We recently identified that Metabase Cloud was attacked by someone utilizing an unknown ('0-day') security vulnerability in versions 1.58 and above," Metabase said in an advisory. Metabase Cloud instances have already been updated to the latest version. Users running self-hosted versions are advised to apply security patches released b...
Kali365 Weaponizes Microsoft Authentication Against US Companies: New Enterprise Risk

Kali365 Weaponizes Microsoft Authentication Against US Companies: New Enterprise Risk

Aug 05, 2026 Phishing / Identity Security
Kali365 is turning a legitimate Microsoft login into a gateway to corporate data. The phishing kit targets US organizations with attacker-controlled device codes that victims approve on Microsoft's real authentication page. Once access and refresh tokens are issued, attackers may retain access to email, documents, and cloud resources, creating a direct path to data exposure, financial fraud, operational disruption, and costly incident response. How Kali365 Targets US Organizations Kali365 is a device code phishing kit built to abuse legitimate Microsoft authentication. ANY.RUN telemetry records more than 80 public sessions linked to the campaign each week, with the United States emerging as its main geographic target. One of these sandbox sessions shows a SharePoint-themed lure used to draw the victim into the authentication flow. View the analysis session and gather IOCs SharePoint-themed Kali365 lure analyzed inside ANY.RUN’s Interactive Sandbox Based on the resear...
PNLD Breach Exposes U.K. Police and Government Contact Details on Dark Web

PNLD Breach Exposes U.K. Police and Government Contact Details on Dark Web

Aug 03, 2026 Data Breach / Dark Web
The Police National Legal Database (PNLD) has confirmed that police, government and customer contact information was compromised and published on the dark web. The data included names, organisations and work email addresses belonging to police officers, police staff, criminal justice professionals, government partners and customers. The incident, identified on July 26, also exposed some names and email addresses belonging to people who had submitted questions through Ask the Police. That exposure could make phishing messages targeting named officers appear more convincing, according to UK government guidance . PNLD said, "There is no evidence to suggest that passwords or other security credentials have been compromised." The service provides legal information, products and services to UK police forces and criminal justice organisations. It is not the Police National Computer or the Police National Database, is not a crime-recording system, and does not hold confidentia...

Azure Cosmos DB Flaw Exposed Platform-Wide Key That Could Access Any Database

Azure Cosmos DB Flaw Exposed Platform-Wide Key That Could Access Any Database

Jul 30, 2026 Vulnerability / Cloud Security
A now-patched vulnerability in Azure Cosmos DB could have let an attacker escape the service's Gremlin query sandbox and obtain full read and write access to databases across customer tenants, according to Wiz. Wiz , which codenamed the chain CosmosEscape , said the exploit chain began with a crafted query against a Gremlin database controlled by the attacker. From there, code execution on a multi-tenant gateway exposed a platform-wide signing secret and a regional account directory, allowing the researchers to locate a target and retrieve its primary account key. Microsoft blocked the vulnerable Gremlin entry point within 48 hours of the November 2025 report. Wiz said Microsoft completed the longer-term fix across all regions in July 2026 and eliminated the platform-wide key. "We appreciate Wiz's work in identifying and reporting this issue through coordinated vulnerability disclosure," a Microsoft spokesperson told The Hacker News. "We have fully addres...
Microsoft Copilot for Word Can Copy Hidden Prompts Into New Documents

Microsoft Copilot for Word Can Copy Hidden Prompts Into New Documents

Jul 30, 2026 Vulnerability / AI Security
Hidden instructions in a Word document can make Microsoft 365 Copilot rewrite figures in a report, then copy the same instructions into the finished file. Håkon Måløy disclosed the technique on July 28, 144 days after reporting it to Microsoft. In his proof of concept, the internally generated file triggered the same behavior when it was used in a second Copilot drafting session. Måløy's timeline says Microsoft confirmed the reported behavior on March 31 and deployed two mitigations. The first blocked the original prompt wording; the second upgraded the underlying model to GPT-5.5. He said the full chain worked with modified instructions on GPT-5.6 the next day, and the attack class still reproduced on July 28. "The vulnerability class therefore remains exploitable at the time of publication," Måløy said. The attack is not zero-click and does not execute conventional malware. It requires a Copilot drafting or editing operation, and the malicious document must en...
Claude AI Just Cracked a Post-Quantum Test Scheme and Found a Faster 7-Round AES Attack

Claude AI Just Cracked a Post-Quantum Test Scheme and Found a Faster 7-Round AES Attack

Jul 28, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Encryption
Anthropic says Claude Mythos Preview helped derive an end-to-end key-recovery attack against HAWK-256 and a 200- to 800-fold speedup for an attack on seven-round AES-128. The HAWK attack exploits a previously unused symmetry in the lattice behind the signature scheme. Anthropic's released implementation gives an expected end-to-end runtime of about three hours and 42 minutes on a 96-core server. The AES result removes a 256-way guessing step from an existing meet-in-the-middle attack. Anthropic said neither result affects production systems. HAWK remains a candidate in a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) post-quantum standardization process, and the public recovery code only targets the smaller HAWK-256 parameter. The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) result applies to seven of AES-128's ten rounds and still requires an impractical number of chosen plaintexts. The company said no production software needs to change as a result. Anthropic published...
The Fastest Path to AI Adoption Runs Through Security

The Fastest Path to AI Adoption Runs Through Security

Jul 22, 2026 AI Security / Shadow IT
Security leaders who build fast, visible paths to AI adoption are becoming the most valued partners in their organizations. AI governance done right gives security teams the visibility they need, employees the tools they want, and CISOs the strategic influence they have earned. According to McKinsey's State of AI report, 76 percent of employees now use AI in some capacity at work, up from 55 percent the year before. Writing assistants, coding copilots, meeting summarizers, AI-powered research tools: they are woven into daily work. Most were never reviewed by security. The conventional response is restriction. An application appears, the security team blocks it, employees find a workaround within days, and the cycle repeats. It comes down to speed: the approval path moves slower than the pace of AI releases. When the official route takes six weeks, and a workaround takes six minutes, most employees will choose the workaround. Technology gets adopted because people find it use...
New ENCFORGE Ransomware Targets AI Model Files in Langflow RCE Attack

New ENCFORGE Ransomware Targets AI Model Files in Langflow RCE Attack

Jul 21, 2026 Threat Intelligence / Vulnerability
Researchers at Sysdig have linked a second attack on the same Langflow server to JADEPUFFER , the AI-agent-driven operator it first documented earlier this month. The same operator has now been spotted deploying ENCFORGE , a new compiled Go ransomware designed to encrypt model weights, vector indexes, training datasets, and other AI infrastructure files across the host filesystem. The entry point did not change. Langflow versions before 1.3.0 expose the /api/v1/validate/code endpoint without authentication, allowing any remote attacker to execute arbitrary Python on the server. The flaw, CVE-2025-3248 , carries a CVSS score of 9.8 and has been in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog since May 5, 2025. As The Hacker News reported earlier this month, the prior operation used throwaway Python code and MySQL's AES_ENCRYPT() function to encrypt and destroy data in Nacos (Alibaba's configuration server) and production databases. The new ENCFORGE payload re...

The Race to Field Military Autonomy Is On, Can Trusted Information Infrastructure Keep Pace?

Jul 17, 2026 National Security / Artificial Intelligence
Military forces are under increasing pressure to field autonomous capabilities faster than ever before. Across the U.S., UK, and NATO, new investment, evolving defense strategies, and accelerated acquisition pathways are transforming how capability is delivered, rewarding programs that can move from concept to operational deployment at commercial speed. Now the focus shifts to the trusted information infrastructure that allows them to operate together at mission speed. As autonomous aircraft, uncrewed maritime vessels, ground systems, satellites and AI-enabled mission applications become increasingly connected, so too does the information that powers them. Telemetry, ISR, command data, AI outputs, sensor-to-shooter workflows and coalition intelligence all need to move seamlessly across platforms, domains, and partners. The future force won't be defined by autonomous systems alone, it will be defined by the trusted information infrastructure that connects them. Defense Has ...

OpenAI’s GPT-Red Automates Prompt Injection Testing to Harden GPT-5.6 Sol

Jul 16, 2026 Red Teaming / Software Security
OpenAI has disclosed details of GPT-Red , an internal automated red-teaming model that scales prompt injection vulnerability discovery with an aim to fix issues before the tools are deployed widely. "GPT‑Red is a strong red-teamer, and our previous models are highly vulnerable to its prompt injection attacks," the artificial intelligence (AI) company said . "We use GPT‑Red to adversarially train GPT‑5.6 , making it much more robust to prompt injections." The model works just like a human red-teamer. It sends a prompt, monitors how a GPT model responds, and iterates its way towards a malicious goal, such as uploading sensitive data to an external server. The development comes as adversarial prompt injections continue to be a persistent thorn in the flesh of large language models, which can be tricked into executing a carefully crafted instruction that can produce undesirable consequences. As agentic systems continue to be hooked to third-party data sources ...
SASE Has An AI Blind Spot. Inspecting Packets Is No Longer Enough.

SASE Has An AI Blind Spot. Inspecting Packets Is No Longer Enough.

Jul 15, 2026 Network Security / Enterprise Security
For years, routing traffic through cloud proxies was good enough. Then work moved to the browser, AI entered the workflow, and the inspection model stopped keeping up. Enterprise workflows now live across SaaS applications, browsers, and an expanding ecosystem of generative AI tools, unsanctioned browser extensions, and autonomous agents. Employees routinely paste intellectual property into public LLMs for code optimization, while automated agents query internal documentation and move data across systems at machine speed. The challenge is not that SASE failed, but that data interactions have shifted to the presentation layer, an area network-centric architectures were never designed to see. This structural paradigm shift is explored in detail within The Guide to Modern SASE Architecture . Why Traditional Enforcement Struggles Traditional SASE relies on backhauling traffic to cloud proxies for decryption, inspection, and policy enforcement. However, modern internet protocols, spe...

Jul 14, 2026 Enterprise Security / Vulnerability
SAP has rolled out updates to address multiple vulnerabilities as part of its July 2026 security updates, including a critical flaw in SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP. The vulnerability in question is CVE-2026-44747 (CVSS score: 9.9), an out-of-bounds write flaw that allows an authenticated attacker to leverage logical errors in memory management to cause a memory corruption that could lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or system unavailability. "As a temporary workaround the note proposes to disable all ICF nodes with a specific property in transaction SICF," SAP security firm Onapsis said . "Since the workaround will disable opening transactions in SAP GUI for HTML, it is not an option for all customers and it is strongly recommended to install the patching ABAP Kernel version." Also addressed by SAP are two other critical vulnerabilities - CVE-2026-27690 (CVSS score: 9.1) - An HTTP request/response smuggling flaw in SAP Approuter...

Hackers Weaponize Balochistan Police Portal in Multi-Group Espionage Campaigns

Jul 11, 2026 Threat Intelligence / Cyber Espionage
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of sustained cyber espionage activity against several Pakistani law enforcement organizations undertaken by suspected China- and India-aligned threat actors between February 2024 and April 2026. "At Balochistan Police, the compromised assets included servers hosting web applications that manage police and citizen data, such as criminal and biometric records," Aleksandar Milenkoski, principal threat researcher at SentinelOne SentinelLABS, said in a report published this week. The activity targeted network appliances and servers hosting web applications that manage biometric records, hotel and tenant registrations linked to national identity records, criminal case files, and personnel records. The China-nexus threat actor is also said to have compromised one of these web applications to deploy a custom implant masquerading as a portal update. The application in question, named Complaint Management System (CMS), serves pol...

URGENT - Progress Tells ShareFile Customers to Shut Down Storage Zone Controllers Over Security Threat

Jul 10, 2026 Enterprise Security / Security Incident
Progress Software has told ShareFile customers to shut down the Windows servers running their Storage Zone Controllers, confirming to The Hacker News that it is responding to a "credible external security threat." The company has temporarily disabled access to the affected accounts, a step it says it took "out of an abundance of caution" while it works with internal and external security experts. It says it has no indication of unauthorized access to any ShareFile accounts or data, and that it notified customers after learning of the threat. What Progress has not said is what the threat is or who is behind it. The order became public when a customer posted the company's email to Reddit's  r/sysadmin  on July 10. Progress  confirmed the disruption on its status page, listing Storage Zone Controller customers as "not operational" and the incident as under investigation as of a 12:12 p.m. EDT update. Only the Storage Zone Controller is af...

Orphaned AI Agents: How to Find Hidden Access Risks Inside Your Network

Jun 18, 2026 AI Security / Data Security
If an autonomous AI agent interacts with your company's core intellectual property today, can your security team instantly name the person who authorized it? For most enterprises, the answer is a simple no . The rush to adopt internal AI tools has left a massive trail of administrative debt: orphaned agents (AI tools left running after their creator leaves the company) and standing privileges (AI that retains permanent, unrestricted access it no longer needs). When an employee moves on, the automated tools they built stay active—often keeping unmonitored access to sensitive databases and source code long after the human’s credentials are revoked. To help security teams bridge this line of accountability, The Hacker News is hosting a technical briefing. Secure your spot today for the live webinar: Orphaned Agents & Standing Privileges: The Hidden Access Risks of Internal AI . Why Existing Security Tools Miss the Signal Traditional access tools treat AI like stand...
