Four Spy Groups Used the Same Chrome and Windows Exploit Kit Within a Week

Four Spy Groups Used the Same Chrome and Windows Exploit Kit Within a Week

Sep 09, 2026 Vulnerability / Cyber Espionage
Multiple espionage-motivated threat activity clusters have been found deploying a previously undocumented exploit kit called BlueMoon that chains together multiple vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows and Google Chrome. The first in-the-wild use of BlueMoon has been attributed to the China-aligned state-sponsored group tracked as APT31 (aka Bronze Vinewood, Judgement Panda, JungleBamboo, PerplexedGoblin, RedBravo, TA412, Tide Castle, and Violet Typhoon) on August 28, 2026. "Within days, several other espionage-motivated clusters began using BlueMoon, the majority of which have a suspected China nexus," Proofpoint said in a report published today. "However, BlueMoon may not be exclusive to China-aligned actors, as some usage remains unattributed and there are also potentially more actors using the exploit kit." The exploit chain employs three vulnerabilities - CVE-2026-85046 , a type confusion in V8 in Google Chrome A V8 sandbox escape that does not...

Researcher Drops New Microsoft Defender PoC Showing ShieldBreak Patch Can Be Bypassed

Sep 09, 2026 Vulnerability / Endpoint Security
The security researcher known as Chaotic Eclipse has dropped a proof-of-concept (PoC) for yet another zero-day in Microsoft Defender. The vulnerability, codenamed ShieldCrash , is assessed to be a patch bypass for CVE-2026-69414 (CVSS score: 7.8), also called ShieldBreak , which the researcher reported last month. "Microsoft has failed to properly patch ShieldBreak CVE-2026-69414," Chaotic Eclipse said. "Under specific conditions it is still possible to trigger the exact same problem that was caused by ShieldBreak. While Microsoft fixed several things to prevent re-exploiting the issue, they missed a spot where ShieldBreak can still be exploited." The PoC demonstrates an arbitrary file read as SYSTEM with the latest version of Windows installed. All supported versions of the desktop operating system are said to be impacted. The development comes days after Redmond shipped an update to the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine to plug CVE-2026-69414. The issue...

Microsoft Patches Record 974 Flaws, Including Two Exploited Windows Zero-Days

Sep 09, 2026 Zero-Day / Vulnerability
Microsoft on Tuesday broke Patch Tuesday records by addressing an earth-shattering 974 vulnerabilities spanning its software portfolio, including two flaws that it said have been actively exploited in the wild. These include 723 flaws in Windows, 111 in Office and Office 2016, 62 in SQL, and 22 in Developer Tools. Of these, over 110 shortcomings have been assigned a critical severity rating. Three prominent vulnerability types, namely privilege escalation, remote code execution, and information disclosure, account for nearly 90% of the flaws patched this month. Along with Microsoft's fixes for 25 non-Microsoft CVEs, the update brings the total number of vulnerabilities resolved to 999. September's record-setting security updates come after Microsoft patched 457 vulnerabilities in August, 663 in July , 220 in June , and 161 in May . "At this scale, the challenge is not simply getting through the patch list but knowing what needs attention first," Jack Bicer...

Rogue ScreenConnect Clients Spread Four-Stage VBScript Chain to Newly Connected Hosts

Rogue ScreenConnect Clients Spread Four-Stage VBScript Chain to Newly Connected Hosts

Sep 07, 2026 Malware / Vulnerability
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of worm-like activity that abuses ConnectWise ScreenConnect to distribute a malicious Visual Basic Script (VBScript) payload to newly connected systems. According to Huntress , three unrelated incidents have been found to use diverse initial access methods, namely a Quick Assist tech-support scam, a phishing-delivered MSI installer, and a fake Geek Squad refund form lure, to activate a four-stage VBScript chain that leads to rogue ScreenConnect installations. However, once the ScreenConnect instances were installed, the cybersecurity company said it observed the clients repeatedly spawning "wscript.exe" to execute VBScripts named 1.vbs, 2.vbs, 3.vbs, and 4.vbs. The incidents were observed in August 2026. The details of the three attacks are below - A social engineering attack that persuaded a user into executing Quick Assist as part of a tech support scam, after which a rogue ScreenConnect remote access client was d...
Four REVSTEALER-Linked Modules Disable Windows Update and Defender to Run a Crypto Miner

Four REVSTEALER-Linked Modules Disable Windows Update and Defender to Run a Crypto Miner

Sep 06, 2026 Malware / Endpoint Security
Elastic Security Labs has documented four previously unreported programs associated with REVSTEALER, an emerging Windows information stealer, that remain on an infected machine after the stealer deletes itself. One of them switches off Windows Update and Microsoft Defender before running a cryptocurrency miner. The company named the four programs ProManager , WinUpdate , SoftManager , and LockAppHost and  published the findings on September 2 , along with a  technical white paper . REVSTEALER has been sold as a commercial infostealer since at least February 2026, when the earliest sample was first detected on VirusTotal. The core stealer exfiltrates browser passwords and cookies, cryptocurrency wallets, gaming accounts, messaging data, and files, then reports "complete" to its server, deletes itself, and leaves no persistence. The four newly documented programs work differently. Each installs itself into the user's profile and stays there. Elastic recovered the ...
Fake Software Installers Disable Windows Update and Weaken Microsoft Defender

Fake Software Installers Disable Windows Update and Weaken Microsoft Defender

Sep 02, 2026 Malware / Social Engineering
An active malware campaign is using bogus software-download websites to impersonate trusted vendors and distribute malicious installers. "The campaign has targeted users looking to download popular software and has resulted in compromises across multiple organizations and industries, primarily affecting China-based operations of multinational organizations and Chinese-speaking users," Microsoft said . The installers, once launched, deploy malware that's capable of setting up persistence, weakening security protections, and communicating with attacker-controlled infrastructure. The activity has resulted in victims spanning healthcare, manufacturing, gaming, technology, logistics, government, and education sectors. The Windows maker has assessed with moderate confidence that the campaign is consistent with a Chinese threat cluster dubbed Silver Fox (aka Yinhu), which has a track record of using spoofed vendor download pages to distribute Gh0st RAT and ValleyRAT (a...

Iranian Hackers Pose as Recruiters to Deliver Cross-Platform RATs Through Coding Tests

Sep 01, 2026 Malware / Cyber Espionage
The Iranian Nimbus Manticore hacking group has been attributed to two previously undocumented malware families that highlight the continued evolution of its toolset and likely expand its targeting footprint to infect Linux and Apple macOS systems using cross-platform remote access trojans (RATs) developed using Node.js and JavaScript. Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky is tracking the malware strains under the names NodeRabbit and PollCat. The first sample of NodeRabbit was discovered on a system in Afghanistan, with subsequent sightings on two distinct machines located in Egypt and Ethiopia. "Its operators deliver [NodeRabbit] through spear-phishing messages on LinkedIn and other job search platforms that contain trojanized coding challenge archives," Kaspersky security researcher Omar Amin said . "Like NodeRabbit, PollCat is a cross-platform RAT, but it is written in obfuscated JavaScript also distributed through trojanized coding challenge archives."...

DevMan RaaS Portal Centralizes Payload Builds, Victim Management, and Affiliate Payouts

Jul 25, 2026 Ransomware / Cybercrime
The operators of the DevMan ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) scheme are maintaining a dedicated web platform that offers affiliates the ability to build payloads, oversee earnings, and manage various aspects related to victims. Swiss cybersecurity company PRODAFT is tracking the centrally administered RaaS operation under the name Funky Mantis . "The portal combined build generation, finance, victim chat, support, victim records, teams, and payout functions," the company said in an extensive report shared with The Hacker News. "The service integrated access brokerage or access distribution with ransomware deployment. Administrators offered country-specific 'networks,' asked whether an affiliate would use personal or program-supplied access, and imposed two-to-three-day completion windows." Various analyses show that DevMan first emerged on the scene in April 2025 as an affiliate for Qilin, DragonForce, Apos, and RansomHub, before shifting to their o...
New 7-Zip Vulnerability Could Let Crafted XZ Archives Run Code During Extraction

New 7-Zip Vulnerability Could Let Crafted XZ Archives Run Code During Extraction

Jul 20, 2026 Vulnerability / Endpoint Security
Opening a crafted XZ archive in 7-Zip could let an attacker run code on the machine. The flaw, CVE-2026-14266 , is a heap-based buffer overflow in how the archiver processes XZ chunked data, and Trend Micro's Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) detailed it on July 15. A fix shipped on June 25 in 7-Zip 26.02 . The overflow lets an attacker "execute code in the context of the current process," per the advisory. The code runs with the token 7-Zip itself holds and gains no privileges of its own. On Windows, a normally launched 7-Zip runs under a filtered standard-user token even on an administrator account, so the attacker inherits those limited rights unless the program was started elevated. The bug came in from Landon Peng of Lunbun LLC, who reported it to 7-Zip on June 5. ZDI rates the flaw 7.0, or High, not the Critical several write-ups reached for. The full CVSS 3.0 vector is AV:L/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H . The AV:L makes it a local attack vector, not a network-re...

UAC-0145 Uses ClickFix CAPTCHAs to Infect Ukrainian Devices wih Malware

Jul 19, 2026 Malware / Cyber Warfare
Russian state-sponsored threat actors have been observed leveraging the infamous ClickFix strategy to trick Ukrainian targets into infecting their own machines with data-stealing malware. According to the Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine (CERT-UA), the activity has been attributed to UAC-0145 , a sub-cluster within Sandworm , an advanced hacking unit affiliated with GRU, Russia's primary foreign military intelligence agency. In these attacks, threat actors have been found to leverage fake CAPTCHA checks on compromised websites that instruct prospective targets to execute a PowerShell command in the terminal. "The mentioned command, as an example, could be intended for downloading and saving a VBS file in the Startup autorun directory; one of the variants of such a program was called GHETTOVIBE," CERT-UA said in an alert. The attacks also involve the use of SCOUTCURL, a PowerShell script that performs basic reconnaissance by harvesting details about t...

Armored Likho Targets Government Agencies, Power Sector with BusySnake Stealer

Jul 03, 2026 Infostealer / Cyber Espionage
A previously undocumented threat actor known as Armored Likho has been attributed to cyber attacks targeting government agencies and the electric power sector across Russia, Brazil, and Kazakhstan. "Armored Likho blends financially motivated campaigns targeting private individuals with targeted cyber espionage aimed at organizations," Kaspersky said in a technical analysis published today. "Their toolkit features obfuscated, modular RATs and infostealers specifically engineered to bypass dynamic analysis." The attacks are also characterized by the use of tools like Go2Tunnel for remote access and network tunneling. The wide variety of tools in its arsenal allows the threat actor to maintain persistent access to compromised hosts, steal credentials and sensitive data, and dynamically deliver modules tailored to the victim's profile. The Russian cybersecurity vendor said Armored Likho shares possible overlaps with a threat cluster tracked by BI.ZONE under...
Ousaban Banking Trojan Targets Iberian Bank Users with Fake PDF Lures

Ousaban Banking Trojan Targets Iberian Bank Users with Fake PDF Lures

Jul 01, 2026 Endpoint Security / Malware
A Brazilian banking trojan called Ousaban is going after Windows users who bank in Spain and Portugal.  Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs  identified the campaign in May 2026. It opens with a phishing PDF disguised as a corrupted file, checks that the visitor is really in Spain or Portugal, and hides its real payload inside an image. The goal is the usual one: steal banking logins and take over accounts. Ousaban sits quietly on a Windows PC and waits for the user to open a banking site. When a target bank loads, it can capture screenshots and keystrokes, tamper with the clipboard, show fake messages, and give the attacker remote control. Together, those are the tools for hijacking a live banking session and taking over an account. Ousaban watches for more than two dozen banks across the two countries, among them Banco Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank, Bankinter, and Caixa Geral de Depósitos. How the attack works It starts with a phishing PDF disguised as a corrupted file. Th...

AI-Generated Browser Ransomware Abuses Chromium API on Windows, Linux, macOS, Android

Jul 01, 2026 Browser Security / Ransomware
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged a new malware artifact generated using DeepSeek that constructed a novel attack path combining "unrealistic browser-malware concepts with a real browser capability" to turn it into a working ransomware technique that runs entirely inside the browser on both Windows and Android devices. "This is the first documented case where a frontier AI model independently bridged the gap between a theoretical browser-only ransomware risk and a practical, working attack chain – surfacing a novel attack path that defenders had previously dismissed as unfeasible due to browser sandboxing limits," Check Point said in a statement shared with The Hacker News. "The expertise needed to discover a new attack path is no longer the bottleneck, and defenders need to account for that shift now — before threat actors operationalize it at scale." The identified sample is a Python Flask application named " deepseek_python_20260125_da...

WhatsApp VBScript Campaign Uses Fake Documents to Install ManageEngine RMM Tool

Jun 23, 2026 Malware / Social Engineering
Direct messages sent via WhatsApp are being used to distribute malicious Visual Basic Script (VBScript) files that lead to the installation of legitimate Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) software. Per findings from Kaspersky, the active campaign is targeting users of WhatsApp Desktop and WhatsApp Web across Malaysia, Brazil, India, Mexico, Singapore, the U.K., Spain, Taiwan, Australia, Russia, and Vietnam. The highest concentration of victims has been reported in Malaysia. "The threat actor uses deceptive file names masquerading as business and financial documents to persuade recipients to download and execute the attachment," security researcher Fareed Radzi said . "Once executed, the VBScript initiates a multi-stage infection chain that ultimately results in the installation of legitimate Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) software, enabling remote access to the victim's system." It's suspected that the threat actor behind the operation ma...
ClickFix Campaigns Expand Malware Delivery With New Loaders and Fake Update Lures

ClickFix Campaigns Expand Malware Delivery With New Loaders and Fake Update Lures

Jun 16, 2026 Malware / Endpoint Security
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged multiple ClickFix campaigns that deliver three malware loaders called BabaDeda Loader , Lorem Ipsum Loader , and Potemkin , per independent reports from Morphisec , BlueVoyant , and Huntress , respectively. Attacks involving BabaDeda Loader, observed in April 2026, have targeted education and financial organizations. "Earlier BabaDeda activity was known for concealing malicious payloads inside legitimate looking installer packages," Morphisec researcher Shmuel Uzan said. "This new framework keeps that same code genome but expands it into a far more capable loader built for stealth, evasion, and payload flexibility." The starting point of the attacks is a ClickFix social engineering attack that deceives users into running attacker-supplied PowerShell commands to deliver the loader, which is then used to drop information stealers and remote access trojans (RATs) by combining well-known techniques like hidden PowerShell, i...

New GreatXML Exploit Bypasses Windows BitLocker via Recovery Partition XML Files

Jun 11, 2026 Endpoint Security / Vulnerability
Security researcher Chaotic Eclipse (aka Nightmare-Eclipse and MSNightmare) has released a new Windows BitLocker bypass dubbed GreatXML , a day after they published an exploit for Microsoft Defender. "This was an accidental discovery, it took a total of 4 hours to find this," the researcher said in a post on Blogger. "If you ever attempted to use Windows Defender Offline Scan , you're automatically vulnerable to a BitLocker bypass. I'm unsure if you can still trigger the bug without ever using the offline scan feature, because you can definitely." The exploit works as follows - Copy an XML file ("unattend.xml") and a recovery folder containing another XML file ("Recovery/WindowsRE/ReAgent.xml") to the root of the recovery partition. Reboot to Windows Recovery Environment ( WinRE ) by holding Shift while clicking Restart in the Windows power menu. If every step is followed correctly, the result is a shell spawned with unre...

Microsoft Defender RoguePlanet Zero-Day Grants SYSTEM Access on Updated Windows

Jun 10, 2026 Zero-Day / Vulnerability
The anonymous security researcher going by the name Chaotic Eclipse (aka Nightmare-Eclipse) has released a proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit for yet another Microsoft Defender zero-day named RoguePlanet . "The exploit is a race condition, so it's a hit or miss," the researcher, who published the exploit under a new GitHub account "MSNightmare" said . "I have managed to get a 100% success rate on some machines while it struggled to work on others." Should the exploit succeed, the result is a shell with SYSTEM-level privileges, granting the attacker the ability to run arbitrary code or perform unauthorized actions. The researcher said the exploit has been tested on Windows 11 and 10 machines with the June 2026 Patch Tuesday updates installed, meaning the exploit works on the up-to-date versions of the desktop operating system. That said, the exploit does not work on Windows Server instances in its current form since "standard users cannot mou...
