Attackers Exploit VMware vCenter Vulnerability to Gain Persistent Remote Access

Aug 12, 2026 Vulnerability / Threat Intelligence
Threat actors have begun to actively exploit a recently patched critical security flaw in Broadcom VMware vCenter, according to new findings from QUIRSO. The vulnerability in question is CVE-2026-59310 (CVSS score: 9.8), a directory-traversal vulnerability in the VMware vCenter server that a malicious actor with network access can exploit to execute arbitrary code. Patches for the flaw were released by Broadcom late last month. The German cybersecurity company said it discovered the activity following an incident response engagement. The attack chain is said to have exhibited path traversal activity consistent with the flaw, followed by the deployment of a malicious cron job to establish persistence on the host using reverse_ssh, an open-source tool used for setting up SSH connections to threat actor-controlled infrastructure. Compromised systems identified by QUIRSO were found to first establish contact with the attacker's domains on August 3, five days after Broadcom pub...

Three Critical VMware Flaws Allow Auth Bypass, Code Execution, and VM Escape

Jul 29, 2026 Vulnerability / Enterprise Security
Broadcom has released security updates to address multiple security flaws impacting VMware ESX, vCenter, Workstation, and Fusion, three of which have been designated as critical in severity. The first of the three critical-rated flaws is CVE-2026-59309 (CVSS score: 9.8), which has been described as an authentication bypass in VMware vCenter. "A malicious actor with network access to vCenter may exploit this issue to bypass authentication and gain unauthorized access to the system," Broadcom said. The second critical flaw is a directory-traversal vulnerability in vCenter ( CVE-2026-59310 , CVSS score: 9.8) that a malicious actor with network access can exploit to execute arbitrary code. Both vulnerabilities have been addressed in the versions below - VMware Cloud Foundation, VMware vSphere Foundation versions 9.1.x.x (Fixed in 9.1.0.0300) VMware Cloud Foundation, VMware vSphere Foundation versions 9.0.x.x (Fixed in 9.0.2.0100) VMware vCenter version...

The Gentlemen Ransomware Claims 478 Victims, Can Spread Like a Worm

Jun 11, 2026 Cybercrime / Ransomware
A new analysis of The Gentlemen operation has revealed that the financially motivated threat group initially operated as an affiliate responsible for conducting double extortion attacks, while leveraging resources from various ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) schemes like LockBit (aka Tenacious Mantis), Qilin (aka Pestilent Mantis), and Medusa (aka Venomous Mantis). According to a detailed report published by PRODAFT, the group, which it tracks as Phantom Mantis, is led by a Russian-speaking cybercriminal it calls LARVA-368, who goes by the online aliases hastalamuerte, ArmCorp, zeta88, nobody0, and santamuerte. The Gentlemen is known to be active since March 2025, claiming a total of 478 victims to date, per data from Ransomware.Live. "In July 2025, Phantom Mantis transitioned into The Gentlemen, an independent partnership program no longer dependent on other RaaS groups," the Swiss cybersecurity company said. "Additionally, LARVA-368 relies heavily on artificia...
