Rebranded Knight Ransomware Targeting Healthcare and Businesses Worldwide

Rebranded Knight Ransomware Targeting Healthcare and Businesses Worldwide

Jun 05, 2024 Ransomware / Cybercrime
An analysis of a nascent ransomware strain called RansomHub has revealed it to be an updated and rebranded version of Knight ransomware, itself an evolution of another ransomware known as Cyclops. Knight (aka Cyclops 2.0) ransomware first arrived in May 2023, employing double extortion tactics to steal and encrypt victims' data for financial gain. It's operational across multiple platforms, including Windows, Linux, macOS, ESXi, and Android. Advertised and sold on the RAMP cybercrime forum, attacks involving the ransomware have been found to leverage phishing and spear-phishing campaigns as a distribution vector in the form of malicious attachments. The ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) operation has since shut down as of late February 2024, when its source code was put up for sale , raising the possibility that it may have changed hands to a different actor, who subsequently decided to update and relaunch it under the RansomHub brand. RansomHub, which posted its first v...
Cybercriminals Abuse Stack Overflow to Promote Malicious Python Package

Cybercriminals Abuse Stack Overflow to Promote Malicious Python Package

May 29, 2024 Software Security / Supply Chain
Cybersecurity researchers have warned of a new malicious Python package that has been discovered in the Python Package Index (PyPI) repository to facilitate cryptocurrency theft as part of a broader campaign. The package in question is pytoileur , which has been downloaded 316 times as of writing. Interestingly, the package author, who goes by the name PhilipsPY, has uploaded a new version of the package (1.0.2) with identical functionality after a previous version (1.0.1) was yanked by PyPI maintainers on May 28, 2024. According to an analysis released by Sonatype, the malicious code is embedded in the package's setup.py script, allowing it to execute a Base64-encoded payload that's responsible for retrieving a Windows binary from an external server. "The retrieved binary, 'Runtime.exe,' is then run by leveraging Windows PowerShell and VBScript commands on the system," security researcher Ax Sharma said . Once installed, the binary establishes persiste...
How AI Is Transforming IAM and Identity Security

How AI Is Transforming IAM and Identity Security

Nov 15, 2024Machine Learning / Identity Security
In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has begun revolutionizing Identity Access Management (IAM), reshaping how cybersecurity is approached in this crucial field. Leveraging AI in IAM is about tapping into its analytical capabilities to monitor access patterns and identify anomalies that could signal a potential security breach. The focus has expanded beyond merely managing human identities — now, autonomous systems, APIs, and connected devices also fall within the realm of AI-driven IAM, creating a dynamic security ecosystem that adapts and evolves in response to sophisticated cyber threats. The Role of AI and Machine Learning in IAM AI and machine learning (ML) are creating a more robust, proactive IAM system that continuously learns from the environment to enhance security. Let's explore how AI impacts key IAM components: Intelligent Monitoring and Anomaly Detection AI enables continuous monitoring of both human and non-human identities , including APIs, service acc...
The End of an Era: Microsoft Phases Out VBScript for JavaScript and PowerShell

The End of an Era: Microsoft Phases Out VBScript for JavaScript and PowerShell

May 23, 2024 Endpoint Security / Data Privacy
Microsoft on Wednesday outlined its plans to deprecate Visual Basic Script (VBScript) in the second half of 2024 in favor of more advanced alternatives such as JavaScript and PowerShell. "Technology has advanced over the years, giving rise to more powerful and versatile scripting languages such as JavaScript and PowerShell," Microsoft Program Manager Naveen Shankar  said . "These languages offer broader capabilities and are better suited for modern web development and automation tasks." The tech giant originally  announced  its plans to gradually sunset VBScript in October 2023. The scripting language, also called Visual Basic Scripting Edition, was first introduced by Microsoft in 1996 as a Windows system component, offering users the ability to automate tasks and develop interactive web pages using Internet Explorer and Edge (in  Internet Explorer mode ). The announced deprecation plan consists of three phases, with the first phase kicking off in the second h...

New DEEP#GOSU Malware Campaign Targets Windows Users with Advanced Tactics

New DEEP#GOSU Malware Campaign Targets Windows Users with Advanced Tactics

Mar 18, 2024 Cybercrime / Cryptocurrency
A new elaborate attack campaign has been observed employing PowerShell and VBScript malware to infect Windows systems and harvest sensitive information. Cybersecurity company Securonix, which dubbed the campaign DEEP#GOSU, said it's likely associated with the North Korean state-sponsored group tracked as Kimsuky (aka Emerald Sleet, Springtail, or Velvet Chollima). "The malware payloads used in the  DEEP#GOSU  represent a sophisticated, multi-stage threat designed to operate stealthily on Windows systems especially from a network-monitoring standpoint," security researchers Den Iuzvyk, Tim Peck, and Oleg Kolesnikov said in a technical analysis shared with The Hacker News. "Its capabilities included keylogging, clipboard monitoring, dynamic payload execution, and data exfiltration, and persistence using both RAT software for full remote access, scheduled tasks as well as self-executing PowerShell scripts using jobs." A notable aspect of the infection proced...
Experts Warn of 'Ice Breaker' Cyberattacks Targeting Gaming and Gambling Industry

Experts Warn of 'Ice Breaker' Cyberattacks Targeting Gaming and Gambling Industry

Feb 01, 2023 Gaming / Cyber Attack
A new attack campaign has been targeting the gaming and gambling sectors since at least September 2022, just as the ICE London 2023 gaming industry trade fair event is scheduled to kick off next week. Israeli cybersecurity company Security Joes is tracking the activity cluster under the name  Ice Breaker , stating the intrusions employ clever social engineering tactics to deploy a JavaScript backdoor. The attack sequence proceeds as follows: The threat actor poses as a customer while initiating a conversation with a support agent of a gaming company under the pretext of having account registration issues. The adversary then urges the individual on the other end to open a screenshot image hosted on Dropbox. Security Joes said that the threat actor is "well-aware of the fact that the customer service is human-operated." Clicking the purported screenshot link sent in the chat leads to the retrieval of an LNK payload or, alternatively, a VBScript file as a backup option,...
Earth Bogle Campaign Unleashes NjRAT Trojan on Middle East and North Africa

Earth Bogle Campaign Unleashes NjRAT Trojan on Middle East and North Africa

Jan 18, 2023 Cyber Threat / Malware
An ongoing campaign dubbed  Earth Bogle  is leveraging geopolitical-themed lures to deliver the NjRAT remote access trojan to victims across the Middle East and North Africa. "The threat actor uses public cloud storage services such as files[.]fm and failiem[.]lv to host malware, while compromised web servers distribute NjRAT," Trend Micro  said  in a report published Wednesday. Phishing emails, typically tailored to the victim's interests, are loaded with malicious attachments to activate the infection routine. This takes the form of a Microsoft Cabinet (CAB) archive file containing a Visual Basic Script dropper to deploy the next-stage payload. Alternatively, it's suspected that the files are distributed via social media platforms such as Facebook and Discord, in some cases even creating bogus accounts to serve ads on pages impersonating legitimate news outlets. The CAB files, hosted on cloud storage services, also masquerade as sensitive voice recordings to ...
GuLoader Malware Utilizing New Techniques to Evade Security Software

GuLoader Malware Utilizing New Techniques to Evade Security Software

Dec 26, 2022 Reverse Engineering
Cybersecurity researchers have exposed a wide variety of techniques adopted by an advanced malware downloader called  GuLoader  to evade security software. "New shellcode anti-analysis technique attempts to thwart researchers and hostile environments by scanning entire process memory for any virtual machine (VM)-related strings," CrowdStrike researchers Sarang Sonawane and Donato Onofri  said  in a technical write-up published last week. GuLoader, also called  CloudEyE , is a Visual Basic Script (VBS) downloader that's used to distribute remote access trojans such as Remcos on infected machines. It was first detected in the wild in 2019. In November 2021, a JavaScript malware strain dubbed RATDispenser  emerged  as a conduit for dropping GuLoader by means of a Base64-encoded VBScript dropper. Recent GuLoader samples unearthed by CrowdStrike have been found to exhibit a three-stage process wherein the VBScript is designed to deliver a next-stage ...
