Researchers Report 84 Flaws in 4G and 5G Cores, Including a Session Hijacking Flaw

Researchers Report 84 Flaws in 4G and 5G Cores, Including a Session Hijacking Flaw

Jul 31, 2026 Mobile Security / Vulnerability
An academic study has disclosed a "widespread class" of security vulnerabilities impacting 4G and 5G core networks that, if successfully exploited, could trigger denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and even session hijacking, allowing an attacker to seize control of a user's network session. The findings have been released by a group of researchers from Singapore's Nanyang Technological University in a paper titled "Understanding Implicit Trust Errors in Core Carrier Networks through Multi-Agent Flaw Discovery and Analysis." The study has uncovered dozens of vulnerabilities in the signaling interfaces of LTE/5G core networks, and specifically covers two LTE implementations (Open5GS and OpenAirInterface) and five 5G implementations (Open5GS, free5GC, OpenAirInterface, SD-Core, and eUPF) across two core signaling protocols, GPRS Tunnelling Protocol Control Plane ( GTP-C ) and Packet Forwarding Control Protocol ( PFCP ). "Our research finds these vulne...
New Sni5Gect Attack Crashes Phones and Downgrades 5G to 4G without Rogue Base Station

New Sni5Gect Attack Crashes Phones and Downgrades 5G to 4G without Rogue Base Station

Aug 26, 2025 Vulnerability / Mobile Security
A team of academics has devised a novel attack that can be used to downgrade a 5G connection to a lower generation without relying on a rogue base station (gNB). The attack , per the ASSET (Automated Systems SEcuriTy) Research Group at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), relies on a new open-source software toolkit named Sni5Gect (short for "Sniffing 5G Inject") that's designed to sniff unencrypted messages sent between the base station and the user equipment (UE, i.e., a phone) and inject messages to the target UE over-the-air. The framework can be used to carry out attacks such as crashing the UE modem, downgrading to earlier generations of networks, fingerprinting, or authentication bypass, according to Shijie Luo, Matheus Garbelini, Sudipta Chattopadhyay, and Jianying Zhou. "As opposed to using a rogue base station, which limits the practicality of many 5G attacks, SNI5GECT acts as a third-party in the communication, silently sniffs me...
Mirai Botnet Launches Record 5.6 Tbps DDoS Attack with 13,000+ IoT Devices

Mirai Botnet Launches Record 5.6 Tbps DDoS Attack with 13,000+ IoT Devices

Jan 22, 2025 Botnet / Network Security
Web infrastructure and security company Cloudflare on Tuesday said it detected and blocked a 5.6 Terabit per second (Tbps) distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, the largest ever attack to be reported to date. The UDP protocol-based attack took place on October 29, 2024, targeting one of its customers, an unnamed internet service provider (ISP) from Eastern Asia. The activity originated from a Mirai -variant botnet. "The attack lasted only 80 seconds and originated from over 13,000 IoT devices," Cloudflare's Omer Yoachimik and Jorge Pacheco said in a report. That said, the average unique source IP address observed per second was 5,500, with the average contribution of each IP address per second around 1 Gbps. The previous record for the largest volumetric DDoS assault was also reported by Cloudflare in October 2024, which peaked at 3.8 Tbps. Cloudflare also revealed it blocked approximately 21.3 million DDoS attacks in 2024, a 53% increase from 2023, and th...
