Credential Theft and Remote Access Surge as AllaKore, PureRAT, and Hijack Loader Proliferate

Credential Theft and Remote Access Surge as AllaKore, PureRAT, and Hijack Loader Proliferate

Jul 22, 2025 Financial Fraud / Malware
Mexican organizations are still being targeted by threat actors to deliver a modified version of AllaKore RAT and SystemBC as part of a long-running campaign.  The activity has been attributed by Arctic Wolf Labs to a financially motivated hacking group called Greedy Sponge . It's believed to be active since early 2021, indiscriminately targeting a wide range of sectors, such as retail, agriculture, public sector, entertainment, manufacturing, transportation, commercial services, capital goods, and banking. "The AllaKore RAT payload has been heavily modified to enable the threat actors to send select banking credentials and unique authentication information back to their command-and-control (C2) server, for the purpose of conducting financial fraud," the cybersecurity company said in an analysis published last week. Details of the campaign were first documented by the BlackBerry Research and Intelligence Team (which is now part of Arctic Wolf) in January 2024, with ...
New IDAT Loader Attacks Using Steganography to Deploy Remcos RAT

New IDAT Loader Attacks Using Steganography to Deploy Remcos RAT

Feb 26, 2024 Steganography / Malware
Ukrainian entities based in Finland have been targeted as part of a malicious campaign distributing a commercial remote access trojan known as Remcos RAT using a malware loader called IDAT Loader. The attack has been attributed to a threat actor tracked by the Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine (CERT-UA) under the moniker UAC-0184. "The attack, as part of the IDAT Loader, used steganography as a technique," Morphisec researcher Michael Dereviashkin said in a report shared with The Hacker News. "While steganographic, or 'Stego' techniques are well-known, it is important to understand their roles in defense evasion, to better understand how to defend against such tactics." IDAT Loader , which overlaps with another loader family called Hijack Loader, has been used to serve additional payloads like DanaBot, SystemBC, and RedLine Stealer in recent months. It has also been used by a threat actor tracked as TA544 to distribute Remcos RAT and SystemBC...
SystemBC Malware's C2 Server Analysis Exposes Payload Delivery Tricks

SystemBC Malware's C2 Server Analysis Exposes Payload Delivery Tricks

Jan 25, 2024 Remote Access Trojan
Cybersecurity researchers have shed light on the command-and-control (C2) server workings of a known malware family called  SystemBC . "SystemBC can be purchased on underground marketplaces and is supplied in an archive containing the implant, a command-and-control (C2) server, and a web administration portal written in PHP," Kroll  said  in an analysis published last week. The risk and financial advisory solutions provider said it has witnessed an increase in the use of malware throughout Q2 and Q3 2023. SystemBC,  first observed  in the wild in 2018, allows threat actors to remote control a compromised host and deliver additional payloads, including trojans, Cobalt Strike, and ransomware. It also features support for launching ancillary modules on the fly to expand on its core functionality. A standout aspect of the malware revolves around its use of SOCKS5 proxies to mask network traffic to and from C2 infrastructure, acting as a persistent access mecha...

Gootkit Malware Adopts New Tactics to Attack Healthcare and Finance Firms

Gootkit Malware Adopts New Tactics to Attack Healthcare and Finance Firms

Feb 09, 2023 Threat Intelligence / Malware
The Gootkit malware is prominently going after healthcare and finance organizations in the U.S., U.K., and Australia, according to new findings from Cybereason. The cybersecurity firm said it investigated a Gootkit incident in December 2022 that adopted a new method of deployment, with the actors abusing the foothold to deliver  Cobalt Strike  and  SystemBC  for post-exploitation. "The threat actor displayed fast-moving behaviors, quickly heading to control the network it infected, and getting elevated privileges in less than four hours," Cybereason  said  in an analysis published February 8, 2023. Gootkit, also called Gootloader, is exclusively attributed to a threat actor tracked by Mandiant as UNC2565. Starting its life in 2014 as a banking trojan, the malware has since morphed into a loader capable of delivering next-stage payloads. The shift in tactics was  first uncovered  by Sophos in March 2021. Gootloader takes the form of heavily-o...
Ransomware Attackers Using SystemBC Malware With RAT and Tor Proxy

Ransomware Attackers Using SystemBC Malware With RAT and Tor Proxy

Dec 16, 2020
Cybercriminals are increasingly outsourcing the task of deploying ransomware to affiliates using commodity malware and attack tools, according to new research. In a new analysis published by Sophos today and shared with The Hacker News, recent deployments of  Ryuk  and  Egregor  ransomware have involved the use of  SystemBC  backdoor to laterally move across the network and fetch additional payloads for further exploitation. Affiliates are typically threat actors responsible for gaining an initial foothold in a target network. "SystemBC is a regular part of recent ransomware attackers' toolkits," said Sophos senior threat researcher and former Ars Technica national security editor Sean Gallagher. "The backdoor can be used in combination with other scripts and malware to perform discovery, exfiltration and lateral movement in an automated way across multiple targets. These SystemBC capabilities were originally intended for mass exploitation, but they h...
