U.S. Prosecutors Indict Cybersecurity Insiders Accused of BlackCat Ransomware Attacks

Federal prosecutors in the U.S. have accused a trio of allegedly hacking the networks of five U.S. companies with BlackCat (aka ALPHV) ransomware between May and November 2023 and extorting them. Ryan Clifford Goldberg, Kevin Tyler Martin, and an unnamed co–conspirator (aka "Co-Conspirator 1") based in Florida, all U.S. nationals, are said to have used the ransomware strain against a medical device company based in Tampa, Florida, a pharmaceutical company based in Maryland, a doctor's office based in California, an engineering company based in California, and a drone manufacturer based in Virginia. The Chicago Sun-Times first reported the indictment over the weekend, stating Martin and Co-Conspirator 1 were employed as ransomware threat negotiators for a company named DigitalMint at the time when these incidents took place. Casbaneiro Banking Malware Goes Under the Radar with UAC Bypass Technique

The financially motivated threat actors behind the  Casbaneiro  banking malware family have been observed making use of a User Account Control ( UAC ) bypass technique to gain full administrative privileges on a machine, a sign that the threat actor is evolving their tactics to avoid detection and execute malicious code on compromised assets. "They are still heavily focused on Latin American financial institutions, but the changes in their techniques represent a significant risk to multi-regional financial organizations as well," Sygnia  said  in a statement shared with The Hacker News. Casbaneiro , also known as Metamorfo and Ponteiro, is best known for its banking trojan, which first emerged in mass email spam campaigns targeting the Latin American financial sector in 2018.
