Popular WordPress SEO Plugin Rank Math PRO Hijacked to Deliver Self-Restoring Backdoor

Popular WordPress SEO Plugin Rank Math PRO Hijacked to Deliver Self-Restoring Backdoor

Oct 19, 2026 Web Security / Vulnerability
Copies of Rank Math PRO, the paid version of the Rank Math SEO plugin for WordPress, that were downloaded from rankmath.com or delivered as updates between 20:02 UTC on October 15 and 07:12 UTC on October 16 contained malware, Rank Math said in a  security notice  published on October 16. Any site that installed and activated one of those copies should be treated as compromised, and the malware can recreate its hidden backdoor whenever someone visits the site. Rank Math has removed the affected files and released a clean version, 3.0.124. Installing it replaces the plugin but does not remove files, administrator accounts, or scheduled tasks the malware may already have placed elsewhere on the server, Wordfence said in an  advisory  on October 17. Who Is Affected The version number does not show whether a copy is affected. Rank Math's  changelog  dates 3.0.123 to October 7, more than a week before the window opened, and the notice limits the inciden...
GhostAction Attackers Plant Credential Stealer Disguised as Font in 94 GitHub Repositories

GhostAction Attackers Plant Credential Stealer Disguised as Font in 94 GitHub Repositories

Oct 19, 2026 Developer Security / Supply Chain
The threat actor behind the GhostAction supply chain attack has expanded beyond injecting malicious GitHub Actions workflows into compromised projects to phish open-source developers and deliver a stealer malware disguised within a fake font file. The latest evolution, detailed by OpenSourceMalware, signals that the attackers are actively refining their modus operandi in response to steps taken by GitHub to prevent the workflow from running. According to the threat intelligence platform, the threat actor registered the domain " my-github[.]com " and pointed it at " 193.32.204[.]199 ," the same IP address that's used as an exfiltration endpoint for data harvested from running the malicious workflow. The domain was registered on October 9, 2026, 17 days after " my-gitlab[.]com " was registered. There is no evidence at this stage to suggest that the two code-hosting-themed domains are operated by the same threat actor. "It follows the sam...
Fake Web3 Accelerator Uses npm Packages to Spread Malware and Hijack AI Agent Traffic

Fake Web3 Accelerator Uses npm Packages to Spread Malware and Hijack AI Agent Traffic

Oct 19, 2026 Malware / Artificial Intelligence
A fake Web3 accelerator has been observed pushing information stealers and backdoors to Windows and macOS systems using malicious npm packages under the pretext of offering free artificial intelligence (AI) credits for Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini, coding tools, and security audits. "The tools delivered information-stealing malware and backdoors for macOS and Windows machines," Elastic Security Labs researchers Jia Yu Chan and Daniel Stepanic said . "The operation also repackaged a legitimate coding agent to send model requests through attacker-controlled services, while its audit tools generated fabricated security findings." The scheme poses as a Web3 venture capital accelerator named Apex Accelerator to target cryptocurrency startups and founders. It's being tracked under the moniker REF8801 . The names of the npm packages, each of which targets both Windows and macOS machines, are listed below - @apexacc/cli (Apex Copilot CLI — AI advisor fo...

MALFEX npm Package 'imgdecode' Hides Shellcode Loader in Windows Native Addon

MALFEX npm Package 'imgdecode' Hides Shellcode Loader in Windows Native Addon

Oct 17, 2026 Malware / Windows Security
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a malicious npm package that's part of a recently disclosed software supply chain attack campaign dubbed MALFEX . The package, named " imgdecode ," was uploaded to the package registry on September 30, 2026, by a user named "malfexteste8." It has been downloaded 979 times as of writing and is still available on npm as of writing. The latest version of the package is 1.0.3. "The npm package imgdecode hides a malicious loader in a compiled Node.js addon," SafeDep said . "Its nine-line JavaScript file loads a Windows dynamic-link library (DLL). When a Node.js program calls require('imgdecode') from a Windows console, the DLL attempts to download encrypted shellcode from GitHub. It decrypts the response and injects the result into a new dllhost.exe process." First documented by both Checkmarx and CloudSEK, MALFEX is the name assigned to a long-running campaign in which an unknown threat...
Attackers Tampered with AOMEI Backupper's Update Servers for Minutes to Deliver a Backdoor

Attackers Tampered with AOMEI Backupper's Update Servers for Minutes to Deliver a Backdoor

Oct 16, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Endpoint Security
Attackers repeatedly changed the files that AOMEI Backupper fetches from the vendor's own update servers, in windows of five to ten minutes at a time between May and July 2026, so that any copy of the Windows backup program that checked for an update during one of those windows would download and run a backdoor. Google Threat Intelligence Group, Mandiant , and  ManageEngine's Threat Analysis Lab , which disclosed the campaign this week, say AOMEI has reported fixing its servers, but that fix does not remove the backdoor from machines that were already hit. AOMEI Backupper is Windows backup and disk-cloning software made by AOMEI Technology, a vendor registered in Hong Kong. Like the company's remote-desktop tool AnyViewer, it runs background services that regularly check AOMEI's servers over HTTPS for software updates and promotional pop-ups. Two files drive that check. One, down_html.ini, names the update package to download and the checksum the program uses to ...
GhostAction Compromises About 1,900 GitHub Accounts, Targets Over 30,000 Repositories

GhostAction Compromises About 1,900 GitHub Accounts, Targets Over 30,000 Repositories

Oct 15, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Cloud Security
The credential-theft campaign known as GhostAction has ramped up, targeting more than 30,000 repositories across 3,000 users and organizations. The spike, according to GitGuardian, was observed on October 8 and 9, 2026. "This resulted from compromising the GitHub accounts of about 1,900 users. It attempted to extract 3,174 secrets from public repositories' CI," security researchers Gaetan Ferry and Guillaume Valadon said . GhostAction is the moniker for a supply chain attack campaign targeting developer infrastructure on GitHub. Originally discovered in September 2025, it involves threat actors compromising legitimate developer accounts to inject malicious GitHub Actions automation workflows into software repositories. Attackers have been found to gain write access to repositories using stolen Personal Access Tokens (PATs) or credentials harvested from infostealer logs and dumps. Using the hijacked maintainer account, they push a malicious workflow file disguis...
Docker Fixes Critical Two-Year-Old Hub Flaw That Let One User Push Images as Another

Docker Fixes Critical Two-Year-Old Hub Flaw That Let One User Push Images as Another

Oct 13, 2026
A flaw in Docker Hub, the registry where container images are published and downloaded, let one user push, pull, or delete images as another user. Docker fixed the flaw on September 30 and says it found no evidence that anyone exploited it. The flaw was in the feature that  converts a personal account  into an organization, Docker said in a  security advisory  on October 12. Conversion transferred the account's personal access tokens (PATs) to the user designated as the organization's owner. A PAT is used in place of a password in the registry, and the person who created each token can still use it. The access was limited to the registry. It did not reach the Docker Hub web interface, and it could not be used to change a password, email address, or two-factor settings, or to take over an account. Docker tracks the flaw as CVE-2026-105445 and rated it critical. The  CVE record  it published on October 13 gives the flaw a CVSS 4.0 score of 9.4. The ...

GitHub Tightens npm Publishing After Flaw Left 1,500+ Packages Vulnerable to Hijacking

Oct 13, 2026 DevSecOps / Supply Chain Security
GitHub has taken the step of expiring unvalidated npm trusted publishing configurations 48 hours after creation after researchers found that it was possible for an attacker to push new versions of a different user's package without having to steal their credentials. "Your configuration becomes validated and exempt from expiry after its first successful publish," the Microsoft-owned subsidiary said . "Changing the repository or project identity requires a new trust relationship with a fresh 48-hour validation window -- ordinary edits don't restart the deadline." The change contains the risk associated with trusting a repository or project name that changes ownership, GitHub said, adding npm also rejects trusted publishing tokens from GitHub Actions issue_comment events going forward, along with the existing pull_request_target restriction. In an update to its documentation, GitHub states that a newly created trusted publisher configuration must compl...
Low-Cost Android Phones Ship With Preinstalled Malware That Turns Them Into Residential Proxies

Low-Cost Android Phones Ship With Preinstalled Malware That Turns Them Into Residential Proxies

Oct 13, 2026 Mobile Security / Cybercrime
Low-cost Android smartphones have been shipped with malicious software baked into the device firmware, allowing bad actors to covertly install apps, conduct ad fraud, and turn devices into residential proxies. The activity, which targets Android devices built on MediaTek platforms across several brands, is being tracked by Bitdefender under the moniker Midnight Mimosa . The preinstalled malware ("com.android.system.lite") runs with system-level privileges, which make it possible to install or uninstall a rotating set of at least 32 disguised apps, grant itself additional permissions to accessibility services, notifications, and SMS, and load arbitrary code supplied remotely by the operators. Specifically, it fetches a remote configuration from an external server and then downloads and executes additional payloads designed to conduct ad fraud and silent installation or removal of partner apps. These apps incorporate proxyware, ad fraud, and code execution features. It...

Ledger Finds Unauthorized Hardware Implant in CryptoBilis-Sold Wallet Amid Fund Theft Reports

Oct 12, 2026 Cryptocurrency / Cybercrime
Cryptocurrency hardware maker Ledger has temporarily paused sales of its products via CryptoBilis following reports of stolen funds linked to devices sold by the reseller. On Friday, the company said it was investigating reports of loss of funds from users in Southeast Asia who had purchased products from CryptoBilis. The incident is said to have resulted in losses totaling more than $86 million, according to pseudonymous blockchain investigator Specter . "We recommend Ledger users who purchased from this reseller in the last 90 days to not initiate set up if you have not done so yet," Ledger said in an X post. "If you have set up your Ledger device, consider moving assets to a new Ledger signer (with new seed)." The company has since revealed that one of the impacted users' devices contained an unauthorized hardware implant, and that it's reaching out to impacted users as part of an ongoing probe into the incident. Out of an abundance of caution, ...
The Third-Party Agent Problem: Why Security Built for AI You Chose Misses the Agents You Didn't

The Third-Party Agent Problem: Why Security Built for AI You Chose Misses the Agents You Didn't

Oct 10, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Enterprise Security
In environments studied for the 2026 State of Agent Security Report , roughly 1,280 third-party products now embed AI. About 282 of them sit behind single sign-on. The other thousand are invisible to identity infrastructure by default, not because anyone hid them, but because an identity stack can only govern what authenticates through it, and most agents never do. That gap is the clearest expression of a shift the security industry is only starting to name. For several years, "AI security" solved a first-party problem: the company decided to use AI, procured licenses, deployed a model behind a gateway, and security pointed controls at the thing the business had chosen. Agents do not arrive that way. They arrive inside software the enterprise already runs, and they arrive without a decision. Why the decision point mattered more than the controls Every control in the first-party toolkit assumes a moment exists: model scanning assumes a model was selected, prompt inspect...
Credential-Stealing GitHub Actions Workflows Planted in Tens of Thousands of Repositories

Credential-Stealing GitHub Actions Workflows Planted in Tens of Thousands of Repositories

Oct 09, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Cloud Security
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of an ongoing credential-theft campaign that has compromised two high-profile open-source maintainer accounts to push a malicious workflow into over 340 repositories. "Using the account of Takashi Kitao, author of the 18,400-star game engine pyxel, the attacker pushed a malicious workflow to 27 repositories starting at 13:20 UTC," StepSecurity said . "Eight hours later, the account of Henry Wu (henrywoo), the original author of Uber's athenadriver, was used to push the same workflow to 318 repositories in a 16-minute window, 21:10–21:26 UTC." As of October 9, 2026, Socket said it has identified more than 500 GitHub accounts that committed the malicious workflow to tens of thousands of repositories since October 7, 2026. The activity has been attributed to GhostAction , a massive supply chain attack campaign that first came to light in September 2025. The activity impacted 817 repositories across 327 GitHu...
Tensorlake npm Package Compromised to Deliver Shai-Hulud Credential-Stealing Worm

Tensorlake npm Package Compromised to Deliver Shai-Hulud Credential-Stealing Worm

Oct 08, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Cloud Security
The npm package known as " tensorlake ," a TypeScript software development kit (SDK) for Tensorlake applications, sandboxes, and cloud services, was compromised as part of a ChainDrop / Shai-Hulud supply chain attack. The malicious version 0.5.144 "contains obfuscated malware that harvests credentials, exfiltrates secrets, establishes persistence, and executes remotely supplied code," Socket said . Version 0.5.144 is no longer available for download from the npm package registry. An analysis of the compromised release shows that it contains a preinstall hook designed to launch a JavaScript file ("package/lib/setup.mjs"), an obfuscated loader that launches the main credential-stealing and self-propagating worm ("package/lib/Math_Symbol.js") using the Bun runtime. The stealer malware is designed to harvest credentials across local files, CI environments, Kubernetes, and Vault sources. It also drops the HackBrowserData binary, exfiltrate...

Eight Malicious npm Packages Downloaded 40,767 Times Deliver Overlord RAT and Stealer

Oct 07, 2026 Supply Chain / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a long-running npm supply chain malware campaign that pushes information stealers and remote access trojans (RAT) to compromised hosts. The campaign has been codenamed MALFEX by CloudSEK and Checkmarx . The activity is assessed to be the work of a lone threat actor who appears to have published 12 packages since August 2023, eight of which have been flagged as malicious. The attack is designed to infect Windows systems through three separate pathways - A loader for Overlord , an open-source RAT written in Go that uses Solana transactions to extract the command-and-control (C2) address A chain that installs movinlike, a Node.js stealer targeting Discord, browsers, Telegram, and cryptocurrency wallets, and A downloader The list of identified malicious packages is below - tlxbnhd tldriver mxdriver img-to-native native-runner function-flag (Still live) function-color (Still live) cdn-img-fetch (S...

Welcome to the Jungle: What We Found Inside 15,465 Public MCP Servers

Oct 06, 2026 Supply Chain / Artificial Intelligence
In 2024, MCP (Model Context Protocol) set out to become the USB-C of AI: one standard for connecting models, agents, and IDEs to tools and data. The protocol delivered. Thousands of developers built servers, and enterprises plugged them into agent workflows. The ecosystem around it fell short. Earlier this year, our team at OX Security ,  traced critical vulnerabilities in Anthropic's MCP source code, downloaded more than 150 million times. This time, we looked at what people actually install: community-published servers across the most popular MCP marketplaces. We found no guardrails and no review. Security is a recommendation, not a policy. A Marketplace With No Bouncer In 2012, Google ran Bouncer, an automated scanner that checked Android apps for malware before they reached users. It wasn't perfect: researchers slipped malware past it . But it existed. MCP marketplaces have no equivalent. Anyone can write a server, push it, and publish it. Even a review wouldn'...
Google Pauses OSS Product Bug Bounty Rewards After Surge in Invalid Automated Reports

Google Pauses OSS Product Bug Bounty Rewards After Surge in Invalid Automated Reports

Oct 06, 2026 Vulnerability / Open Source
Google has stopped accepting product vulnerability reports through its bug bounty program for its open-source software. The change, in effect since October 1, means researchers can no longer submit security flaws in the code of projects such as Go, Angular, and Protocol Buffers there for a reward. Reports about supply chain compromises are still accepted, and reports filed before October 1 are not affected. Google called the stop temporary in a  post on X  on October 1 and said it was due to "a significant rise in automated submissions, the vast majority of which are not valid." The post gave no figures. It did not say whether the submissions were produced with AI tools. The  rules of the program , called the Open Source Software Vulnerability Reward Program (OSS VRP), now carry a notice of the stop. It commits Google to an update in the first quarter of 2027 while it reworks this part of the program. Neither the post nor the notice gives a date for accepting p...
The Credential Layer Is Expanding Faster Than Security Teams Can See It

The Credential Layer Is Expanding Faster Than Security Teams Can See It

Oct 05, 2026 DevSecOps / Supply Chain
Every modern enterprise depends on credentials. This is how humans, systems, and now AI, all connect to data, services, and each other securely. GitGuardian helps secure that credential layer through three connected capabilities: Detect, Remediate, and Prevent. The journey starts with detection, because organizations first need to understand what credentials exist, where they live, and what they can access. This is the first of three articles we are releasing that explain the reason behind our mission.  — Software production is accelerating beyond the growth assumptions that shaped many of today's security controls. GitHub COO Kyle Daigle said the platform had gone from roughly 1 billion commits during all of 2025 to 2.9 billion commits in August 2026, an annualized pace of over 14 billion for the 2026 reporting year. GitHub's own engineering team has gone further in its capacity planning, saying it moved from preparing for 10x scale to designing for a future that require...
How Financial Services Companies Can Modernize Their Software Supply Chain

How Financial Services Companies Can Modernize Their Software Supply Chain

Oct 01, 2026 DevSecOps / Patch Management
Every security leader at a bank, insurer, or asset manager has had a version of this conversation: Security wants to eliminate a class of vulnerabilities. Engineering explains what it would take to upgrade the platform where they live. Somebody prices out the regression testing. Somebody else raises the change-freeze calendar. The finding gets an exception, a compensating control, and a date eighteen months out on the roadmap to address it. Nobody in that conversation is being unreasonable. Financial services carry more legacy software than almost any other industry for a few reasons: decades of accumulated infrastructure, regulatory obligations that reward stability, and applications where an hour of downtime is unacceptable. In that environment, minimizing change is risk management. Every dependency bump, every base image swap, every migration is a chance to break something that clears trades or moves money. So the instinct to stick to the status quo has been sound. The problem...

101 Malicious npm Packages Add Developers' WhatsApp Accounts to Groups Without Consent

Sep 29, 2026 Supply Chain / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have identified a cluster of 101 npm packages that are used to trap developers into a WhatsApp group subscriber campaign dubbed PhantomSub . "The malicious packages abuse the 'Baileys' WhatsApp open source project to add the victims to groups without their consent," OX Security researchers Nir Zadok, Moshe Siman Tov Bustan, and Vitalii Chepurko said in a technical write-up published Monday. OpenAI Shelves GPT-6.1 Astra After Tests Find Deception and Unauthorized Actions

Sep 29, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Supply Chain
OpenAI on Monday shelved plans to release GPT-6.1 Astra, a next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) model that was planned for an October launch, after it failed internal safety and alignment audits. The development was first reported by The Wall Street Journal. The move "marks a rare case of a major AI developer ditching a new release because of safety concerns," the news publication said. The ChatGPT maker said it made the decision to scrap its GPT-6.1 Astra model release after testing raised questions about whether it can follow user instructions without deviating from expected behavior. The Journal reported that the model exhibited higher levels of deception than its predecessor during evaluation, and failed to disclose what actions it had carried out. In some cases, it went ahead without seeking permission or attempted to use outside tools in scenarios where doing so could be deemed unsafe. "While (GPT-6.1 Astra) improved on axes such as model laziness...
