Credential-Stealing GitHub Actions Workflows Planted in Tens of Thousands of Repositories

Credential-Stealing GitHub Actions Workflows Planted in Tens of Thousands of Repositories

Oct 09, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Cloud Security
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of an ongoing credential-theft campaign that has compromised two high-profile open-source maintainer accounts to push a malicious workflow into over 340 repositories. "Using the account of Takashi Kitao, author of the 18,400-star game engine pyxel, the attacker pushed a malicious workflow to 27 repositories starting at 13:20 UTC," StepSecurity said . "Eight hours later, the account of Henry Wu (henrywoo), the original author of Uber's athenadriver, was used to push the same workflow to 318 repositories in a 16-minute window, 21:10–21:26 UTC." As of October 9, 2026, Socket said it has identified more than 500 GitHub accounts that committed the malicious workflow to tens of thousands of repositories since October 7, 2026. The activity has been attributed to GhostAction , a massive supply chain attack campaign that first came to light in September 2025. The activity impacted 817 repositories across 327 GitHu...
Tensorlake npm Package Compromised to Deliver Shai-Hulud Credential-Stealing Worm

Tensorlake npm Package Compromised to Deliver Shai-Hulud Credential-Stealing Worm

Oct 08, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Cloud Security
The npm package known as " tensorlake ," a TypeScript software development kit (SDK) for Tensorlake applications, sandboxes, and cloud services, was compromised as part of a ChainDrop / Shai-Hulud supply chain attack. The malicious version 0.5.144 "contains obfuscated malware that harvests credentials, exfiltrates secrets, establishes persistence, and executes remotely supplied code," Socket said . Version 0.5.144 is no longer available for download from the npm package registry. An analysis of the compromised release shows that it contains a preinstall hook designed to launch a JavaScript file ("package/lib/setup.mjs"), an obfuscated loader that launches the main credential-stealing and self-propagating worm ("package/lib/Math_Symbol.js") using the Bun runtime. The stealer malware is designed to harvest credentials across local files, CI environments, Kubernetes, and Vault sources. It also drops the HackBrowserData binary, exfiltrate...

Eight Malicious npm Packages Downloaded 40,767 Times Deliver Overlord RAT and Stealer

Oct 07, 2026 Supply Chain / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a long-running npm supply chain malware campaign that pushes information stealers and remote access trojans (RAT) to compromised hosts. The campaign has been codenamed MALFEX by CloudSEK and Checkmarx . The activity is assessed to be the work of a lone threat actor who appears to have published 12 packages since August 2023, eight of which have been flagged as malicious. The attack is designed to infect Windows systems through three separate pathways - A loader for Overlord , an open-source RAT written in Go that uses Solana transactions to extract the command-and-control (C2) address A chain that installs movinlike, a Node.js stealer targeting Discord, browsers, Telegram, and cryptocurrency wallets, and A downloader The list of identified malicious packages is below - tlxbnhd tldriver mxdriver img-to-native native-runner function-flag (Still live) function-color (Still live) cdn-img-fet...

Welcome to the Jungle: What We Found Inside 15,465 Public MCP Servers

Welcome to the Jungle: What We Found Inside 15,465 Public MCP Servers

Oct 06, 2026 Supply Chain / Artificial Intelligence
In 2024, MCP (Model Context Protocol) set out to become the USB-C of AI: one standard for connecting models, agents, and IDEs to tools and data. The protocol delivered. Thousands of developers built servers, and enterprises plugged them into agent workflows. The ecosystem around it fell short. Earlier this year, our team at OX Security ,  traced critical vulnerabilities in Anthropic's MCP source code, downloaded more than 150 million times. This time, we looked at what people actually install: community-published servers across the most popular MCP marketplaces. We found no guardrails and no review. Security is a recommendation, not a policy. A Marketplace With No Bouncer In 2012, Google ran Bouncer, an automated scanner that checked Android apps for malware before they reached users. It wasn't perfect: researchers slipped malware past it . But it existed. MCP marketplaces have no equivalent. Anyone can write a server, push it, and publish it. Even a review wouldn'...
Google Pauses OSS Product Bug Bounty Rewards After Surge in Invalid Automated Reports

Google Pauses OSS Product Bug Bounty Rewards After Surge in Invalid Automated Reports

Oct 06, 2026 Vulnerability / Open Source
Google has stopped accepting product vulnerability reports through its bug bounty program for its open-source software. The change, in effect since October 1, means researchers can no longer submit security flaws in the code of projects such as Go, Angular, and Protocol Buffers there for a reward. Reports about supply chain compromises are still accepted, and reports filed before October 1 are not affected. Google called the stop temporary in a  post on X  on October 1 and said it was due to "a significant rise in automated submissions, the vast majority of which are not valid." The post gave no figures. It did not say whether the submissions were produced with AI tools. The  rules of the program , called the Open Source Software Vulnerability Reward Program (OSS VRP), now carry a notice of the stop. It commits Google to an update in the first quarter of 2027 while it reworks this part of the program. Neither the post nor the notice gives a date for accepting p...
The Credential Layer Is Expanding Faster Than Security Teams Can See It

The Credential Layer Is Expanding Faster Than Security Teams Can See It

Oct 05, 2026 DevSecOps / Supply Chain
Every modern enterprise depends on credentials. This is how humans, systems, and now AI, all connect to data, services, and each other securely. GitGuardian helps secure that credential layer through three connected capabilities: Detect, Remediate, and Prevent. The journey starts with detection, because organizations first need to understand what credentials exist, where they live, and what they can access. This is the first of three articles we are releasing that explain the reason behind our mission.  — Software production is accelerating beyond the growth assumptions that shaped many of today's security controls. GitHub COO Kyle Daigle said the platform had gone from roughly 1 billion commits during all of 2025 to 2.9 billion commits in August 2026, an annualized pace of over 14 billion for the 2026 reporting year. GitHub's own engineering team has gone further in its capacity planning, saying it moved from preparing for 10x scale to designing for a future that require...
How Financial Services Companies Can Modernize Their Software Supply Chain

How Financial Services Companies Can Modernize Their Software Supply Chain

Oct 01, 2026 DevSecOps / Patch Management
Every security leader at a bank, insurer, or asset manager has had a version of this conversation: Security wants to eliminate a class of vulnerabilities. Engineering explains what it would take to upgrade the platform where they live. Somebody prices out the regression testing. Somebody else raises the change-freeze calendar. The finding gets an exception, a compensating control, and a date eighteen months out on the roadmap to address it. Nobody in that conversation is being unreasonable. Financial services carry more legacy software than almost any other industry for a few reasons: decades of accumulated infrastructure, regulatory obligations that reward stability, and applications where an hour of downtime is unacceptable. In that environment, minimizing change is risk management. Every dependency bump, every base image swap, every migration is a chance to break something that clears trades or moves money. So the instinct to stick to the status quo has been sound. The problem...

101 Malicious npm Packages Add Developers' WhatsApp Accounts to Groups Without Consent

Sep 29, 2026 Supply Chain / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have identified a cluster of 101 npm packages that are used to trap developers into a WhatsApp group subscriber campaign dubbed PhantomSub . "The malicious packages abuse the 'Baileys' WhatsApp open source project to add the victims to groups without their consent," OX Security researchers Nir Zadok, Moshe Siman Tov Bustan, and Vitalii Chepurko said in a technical write-up published Monday. These packages have been collectively downloaded 490,000 times, out of which 116,000 occurred in the last 30 days. The names of some of the packages are below - ourin-baileys @nexustechpro/baileys @badzz88/baileys @ostyado/baileys levvleys @vanzxy/baileys @yudzxml/baileys @chatunity/baileys @kelvdra/baileys neuralwhatsapp lilys-baileys @fyxzpediaa/baileys noxleyss @xrelly-stack/bails alipclutch-baileys kurobails eliteprotech-baileys @xayz/baileys chromestaff-baileys @sanzoffc/baileys @s...
OpenAI Shelves GPT-6.1 Astra After Tests Find Deception and Unauthorized Actions

OpenAI Shelves GPT-6.1 Astra After Tests Find Deception and Unauthorized Actions

Sep 29, 2026 Artificial Intelligence / Supply Chain
OpenAI on Monday shelved plans to release GPT-6.1 Astra, a next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) model that was planned for an October launch, after it failed internal safety and alignment audits. The development was first reported by The Wall Street Journal. The move "marks a rare case of a major AI developer ditching a new release because of safety concerns," the news publication said. The ChatGPT maker said it made the decision to scrap its GPT-6.1 Astra model release after testing raised questions about whether it can follow user instructions without deviating from expected behavior. The Journal reported that the model exhibited higher levels of deception than its predecessor during evaluation, and failed to disclose what actions it had carried out. In some cases, it went ahead without seeking permission or attempted to use outside tools in scenarios where doing so could be deemed unsafe. "While (GPT-6.1 Astra) improved on axes such as model laziness...

Compromised GitHub Actions Came Back Online and Resumed Executing Mini Shai-Hulud Malware

Sep 25, 2026 Malware / Supply Chain Attack
Two actions-cool GitHub Actions have been disabled for a second time after the repositories became accessible last week, months after they were compromised during the May 2026 Mini Shai-Hulud campaign . The affected GitHub Actions are listed below - actions-cool/issues-helper actions-cool/maintain-one-comment Visiting either of the repositories now shows the message: "Access to this repository has been disabled by GitHub Staff due to a violation of GitHub's terms of service. If you are the owner of the repository, you may reach out to GitHub Support for more information." "On September 16, 2026, both repositories became accessible again," Socket researcher Karlo Zanki said . "Their release tags were not cleaned up first. They still point to the malicious content introduced on May 18, so any workflow that references either action by a version tag resumed downloading and executing the payload on its next run." The two GitHub Actions work...

Attackers Use Malicious Terraform Providers to Deliver Go Malware via HashiCorp Registry

Sep 23, 2026 Malware / Supply Chain
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed Go-based malware distributed via two Go Modules and two Terraform providers, marking the first time threat actors are using the centralized repository hosted by HashiCorp as a distribution vector for malicious payloads. According to Aikido , the list of Terraform providers and Go modules is below - gocommunity-io/dockerd (222 downloads) kreuzwenker/docker (1,449 downloads) gocommunity.io/orderedbtree gogets.dev/btreex The malware deployed through these packages demonstrates overlaps with Graphalgo , a campaign that was first documented by ReversingLabs earlier this February and attributed to North Korean (aka DPRK) threat actors. As part of this effort, prospective developers are approached via social platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook, or through job offerings on forums by posing as non-existent Web3 companies, and then asked to complete a coding task by providing a benign GitHub repository that introduces the malicio...
A Leaked GitLab Issue Email Address Lets Anyone Push Code and Run CI Jobs as You

A Leaked GitLab Issue Email Address Lets Anyone Push Code and Run CI Jobs as You

Sep 23, 2026 DevOps Security / Supply Chain
The private email address GitLab gives you for filing issues by email is a credential. Anyone who gets it can email a patch that GitLab commits in your name, to any branch you can push to, including main, and can start CI/CD jobs that run as you. GitLab shows each user this address behind a button labeled "Email work item to this project." Mail sent to it opens an issue in that project, authored by you. The string in the middle of the address is a token tied to your account, and GitLab's documentation says it does not expire. The address looks like it belongs to one project. It does not.  Aikido Security , which reported the behavior, found that the addresses GitLab creates for a user's different projects all share the same token, and that the token applies to every project the account can open, public or private. GitLab does not check who sent the email. Any mailbox can write to the address, and GitLab acts on the message as if it came from you. Whoever holds...
Compromised MemTensor Packages Deliver sckit Credential Stealer via npm and PyPI

Compromised MemTensor Packages Deliver sckit Credential Stealer via npm and PyPI

Sep 23, 2026 Malware / Cloud Security
Unknown threat actors have managed to compromise two legitimate MemTensor packages across the npm and Python Package Index (PyPI) repositories to push a platform-specific Go-based implant dubbed sckit designed for Windows, Linux, and macOS. According to reports from Aikido , SafeDep , Socket , and StepSecurity , the libraries in question below - @memtensor/memos-cloud-openclaw-plugin versions 0.1.21, 0.1.23 and 0.1.25 (versions 0.1.22 and 0.1.24 are clean) MemoryOS version 2.0.34 (project currently quarantined on PyPI) The malicious npm package versions include a "hidden Go payload into a legitimate AI memory integration. Versions 0.1.21, 0.1.23, and 0.1.25 contain code that launches the payload when the agent gateway starts and whenever the plugin handles a memory-recall event," StepSecurity said. "The launcher passes the host process environment and, during recall, the user's prompt text directly to the malicious executable."

Malicious npm Package Poses as Twilio Bug-Bounty Probe, Can Exfiltrate Credentials

Sep 22, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed details of a malicious npm package named "tw-pkgprobe-7731" that masquerades as a security tool targeting developers integrating Twilio into their applications, while stealthily attempting to harvest sensitive data. The package, named "tw-pkgprobe-7731," was first uploaded to the npm registry in mid-August 2026 by an npm account named "twdepprobe7731." In total, 11 versions of the package were published in quick succession on the same day over an approximately 45-minute time period. The npm user account no longer exists as of writing. "The first version of tw-pkgprobe-7731 posed as an authorized security research probe," ReversingLabs researcher Lucija Valentić said in a report published today. "Comments inside the package describe it as an 'Authorized bug-bounty research probe (Twilio HackerOne program)' that 'runs only inside Twilio's serverless packager sandbox' and ...

Malicious npm Package indexed-btree Hid Its Loader in Runtime Code Before Removal

Sep 22, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Malware
A malicious npm package named "indexed-btree" has been observed hiding its malicious behavior within application code rather than using lifecycle scripts, indicating that threat actors are likely shifting tactics in response to recent security controls . "Indexed-btree is a malicious npm package mimicking the legit sorted-btree package, an ordinary B-tree/indexing utility," Checkmarx said . "Unlike the common attacks we've seen in the supply chain space, this package does not rely on preinstall / postinstall at all. Instead, it runs entirely from application code at runtime." The package and the associated GitHub repository are no longer available for download from npm. However, statistics show the package was first uploaded to the registry on June 18, 2026, by an npm user named " charlessadler25 ," amassing millions of downloads in a short span of time . To make matters worse, the campaign may have generated illicit profits for the...

Jade Sleet Linked to Indian IT Provider Breach With FLATROOF and ROOFDECK Backdoors

Sep 21, 2026 Malware / Social Engineering
The North Korean threat actor known as Jade Sleet has been attributed to the compromise of an India-based "much smaller organization" in the information technology (IT) services industry, once again highlighting how the adversary continues to target developers to breach target networks. Cybersecurity company SentinelOne, which disclosed details of the activity, said it involved the use of Apple macOS backdoors tracked as FLATROOF (aka Gaslight ) and ROOFDECK, both of which were previously observed in the March-April 2026 attack on KelpDAO's LayerZero bridge . Jade Sleet, also tracked under the monikers PUKCHONG, Slow Pisces, TraderTraitor, and UNC4899, has a history of targeting the Web3 sector for cryptocurrency heists. In early 2025, the hacking group was tied to the theft of about $1.5 billion from Bybit's cold wallet infrastructure following a supply chain compromise of Safe{Wallet}'s developer environment. "Jade Sleet mostly targets users as...
CrowdSec Says TanStack npm Attack Led to Copy of 170 Private GitHub Repositories

CrowdSec Says TanStack npm Attack Led to Copy of 170 Private GitHub Repositories

Sep 19, 2026 Data Breach / Supply Chain Attack
An attacker copied about 170 of CrowdSec's private GitHub repositories on May 22 using the account of an employee who had just left, CrowdSec said on September 18. The French security company had kept his GitHub access open. CrowdSec says his laptop was compromised in May's  supply chain attack on TanStack , in which malicious versions of TanStack's npm packages stole credentials from developers' machines. The code appeared on an online forum on September 16. Along with the source code, it contained the email addresses of 83 CrowdSec users and the names, email addresses, and investment context of 51 potential investors from 2020, the company said. CrowdSec says the account was used only to copy code, that its infrastructure and databases were not accessed, and that no code was changed. How the Code Was Taken On May 11, 84 malicious versions of 42 TanStack npm packages were published. The compromise is tracked as CVE-2026-45321 . Installing one of those versi...
An Abandoned CDN Domain Was Re-Registered. Thousands of Sites Still Call It.

An Abandoned CDN Domain Was Re-Registered. Thousands of Sites Still Call It.

Sep 18, 2026 Web Security / Compliance
In July 2025, someone registered a domain that used to belong to a content delivery network.  The CDN had been wound down years earlier, and the domain it served assets from was allowed to expire. What it had not lost were its callers. Thousands of websites, code repositories, and documentation pages still carry hard-coded references to hostnames beneath it.  The new owner holds wildcard DNS across the entire domain, and any hostname under it now resolves to infrastructure that person controls. Today the apex serves an ad-heavy media downloader page, which is unremarkable. The remarkable part is that the decision about what those thousands of pages load next belongs to a stranger, and nobody involved has been notified, because from the outside nothing broke.  This pattern is not hypothetical, and it's not unheard of either. In June 2024, the polyfill.io domain (a JavaScript shim embedded in more than 110,000 sites) changed ownership and began serving conditional redi...
Plugin4Shell Lets Repository Owners Swap Pinned Plugin Code Across Four AI Coding Agents

Plugin4Shell Lets Repository Owners Swap Pinned Plugin Code Across Four AI Coding Agents

Sep 18, 2026 Vulnerability / Artificial Intelligence
A flaw in four widely used AI coding agents lets someone who controls a plugin's code repository swap the plugin an agent installs for a malicious one, even when the agent locked that plugin to a specific reviewed version, security firm  Air Security said on Thursday . The firm said Anthropic has patched the flaw in Claude Code 2.1.179 and OpenAI in Codex 0.146.0, that GitHub Copilot has no fix, and that Google will not patch the Gemini CLI, which it is retiring. The agents install add-ons called plugins from online marketplaces. To stay safe, a marketplace locks each plugin to a single reviewed version by its commit hash, a long string that identifies an exact snapshot of the code. Air found that the agents fetch that snapshot but never check that the code they end up with actually matches it. A branch is a named line of code in a repository. On a code host that lets someone create a branch whose name is made to look like the commit hash, the owner of a plugin's reposit...

WeaselBiscuit Stealer Spreads via 13 npm Packages to Harvest Chrome Extension Storage

Sep 18, 2026 Malware / Web Security
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a cluster of 13 npm packages that have been found to deliver a previously undocumented JavaScript stealer codenamed WeaselBiscuit . The new malware family, per OpenSourceMalware , exhibits functional overlaps with two malware strains associated with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) Contagious Interview campaign: BeaverTail and OtterCookie . "It's smaller, lighter, and stripped down, with many of the heavier functions removed entirely," security researcher Paul McCarty (aka 6mile) said. The names of the packages are below - @biz44/id10-client @biz44/id12-client @biz44/id44-client @biz44/id79-client @biz44/id95-client @biz44/id99-client @biz44/process-runtime-utils @biz44/runtime-utils engin1 id79-client process-lhpm process-mite process-tailwind "It's a stripped down stealer that borrows several functions from DPRK's BeaverTail and OtterCookie,...
