Critical OpenWrt DHCPv6 Flaw Could Let Unauthenticated Attackers Run Code as Root

Critical OpenWrt DHCPv6 Flaw Could Let Unauthenticated Attackers Run Code as Root

Jul 28, 2026 Network Security / Vulnerability
OpenWrt has shipped version 24.10.8 to close a critical DHCPv6 stack overflow and a wider set of remotely triggerable flaws in network services enabled by default. The critical issue, tracked as CVE-2026-53921 and rated 9.8 on CVSS 3.1 in OpenWrt's GitHub advisory, lets an unauthenticated attacker able to reach the DHCPv6 server overwrite a stack buffer in odhcpd through a crafted DHCPv6 REQUEST. odhcpd runs as root, and the advisory notes that embedded hardware commonly lacks stack canaries and address space layout randomization (ASLR), making code execution a realistic outcome on typical devices. The advisory includes public Python proof-of-concept code for both documented overflow paths. Users on the 24.10 branch should install 24.10.8, while users on 25.12 should install 25.12.5; firmware images are available through the OpenWrt Firmware Selector. As of July 28, the reviewed OpenWrt materials did not report exploitation in the wild. The flaw was also absent from CISA...

Critical OpenWrt Vulnerability Exposes Devices to Malicious Firmware Injection

Dec 13, 2024 Linux / Vulnerability
A security flaw has been disclosed in OpenWrt 's Attended Sysupgrade ( ASU ) feature that, if successfully exploited, could have been abused to distribute malicious firmware packages. The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2024-54143 , carries a CVSS score of 9.3 out of a maximum of 10, indicating critical severity. Flatt Security researcher RyotaK has been credited with discovering and reporting the flaw on December 4, 2024. The issue has been patched in ASU version 920c8a1 . "Due to the combination of the command injection in the imagebuilder image and the truncated SHA-256 hash included in the build request hash, an attacker can pollute the legitimate image by providing a package list that causes the hash collision," the project maintainers said in an alert. OpenWrt is a popular open-source Linux-based operating system for routers, residential gateways, and other embedded devices that route network traffic. Successful exploitation of the shortcoming could essentiall...
Critical RCE Bug Affects Millions of OpenWrt-based Network Devices

Critical RCE Bug Affects Millions of OpenWrt-based Network Devices

Mar 24, 2020
A cybersecurity researcher today disclosed technical details and proof-of-concept of a critical remote code execution vulnerability affecting OpenWrt , a widely used Linux-based operating system for routers, residential gateways, and other embedded devices that route network traffic. Tracked as CVE-2020-7982 , the vulnerability resides in the OPKG package manager of OpenWrt that exists in the way it performs integrity checking of downloaded packages using the SHA-256 checksums embedded in the signed repository index. While an 'opkg install' command is invoked on the victim system, the flaw could allow a remote man-in-the-middle attacker in a position to intercept the communication of a targeted device to execute arbitrary code by tricking the system into installing a malicious package or software update without verification. If exploited successfully, a remote attacker could gain complete control over the targeted OpenWrt network device, and subsequently, over the netwo...
