Forget Data Leakage: Shadow AI's Real Threat Is Access Control

Forget Data Leakage: Shadow AI's Real Threat Is Access Control

Jun 19, 2026 Agentic AI / SaaS Security
The first wave of enterprise AI concern was straightforward. It was simply employees pasting sensitive data into public AI tools. Security teams responded with usage policies, domain blocks, and data loss prevention rules. That response made sense at the time. It doesn't fit the problem anymore. Shadow AI has shifted from a data leakage concern to an access control problem. The threat isn't about what employees type into AI tools. It's about which AI agents are running inside the organization, what enterprise systems they're connected to, and what actions they're authorized,or not, to take. From passive tools to active actors Employees and business units are building AI agents at a pace most security teams can't keep track of. Custom assistants, coding agents, workflow automations, and agentic applications are being created across departments with some in sanctioned platforms, but many through browser extensions, SaaS-native features, developer tools, M...
The Hidden Threat in Your Stack: Why Non-Human Identity Management is the Next Cybersecurity Frontier

The Hidden Threat in Your Stack: Why Non-Human Identity Management is the Next Cybersecurity Frontier

Jun 10, 2025 Identity Management / DevOps
Modern enterprise networks are highly complex environments that rely on hundreds of apps and infrastructure services. These systems need to interact securely and efficiently without constant human oversight, which is where non-human identities (NHIs) come in. NHIs — including application secrets, API keys, service accounts, and OAuth tokens — have exploded in recent years, thanks to an ever-expanding array of apps and services that must work together and identify one another on the fly. In some enterprises, NHIs now outnumber human identities by as much as 50-to-1 .  However, NHIs introduce unique risks and management challenges that have security leaders on high alert. Forty-six percent of organizations have experienced compromises of NHI accounts or credentials over the past year, and another 26% suspect they have, according to a recent report from Enterprise Strategy Group .  It’s no wonder NHIs — and the difficulties they present with oversight, risk reduction, and gove...
Do We Really Need The OWASP NHI Top 10?

Do We Really Need The OWASP NHI Top 10?

Jan 27, 2025 Application Security / API Security
The Open Web Application Security Project has recently introduced a new Top 10 project - the Non-Human Identity (NHI) Top 10. For years, OWASP has provided security professionals and developers with essential guidance and actionable frameworks through its Top 10 projects, including the widely used API and Web Application security lists.  Non-human identity security represents an emerging interest in the cybersecurity industry, encompassing the risks and lack of oversight associated with API keys, service accounts , OAuth apps, SSH keys, IAM roles, secrets, and other machine credentials and workload identities.  Considering that the flagship OWASP Top 10 projects already cover a broad range of security risks developers should focus on, one might ask - do we really need the NHI Top 10? The short answer is - yes . Let’s see why, and explore the top 10 NHI risks.  Why we need the NHI Top 10 While other OWASP projects might touch on related vulnerabilities, such as secret...
