Qilin and Warlock Ransomware Use Vulnerable Drivers to Disable 300+ EDR Tools

Qilin and Warlock Ransomware Use Vulnerable Drivers to Disable 300+ EDR Tools

Apr 06, 2026 Ransomware / Endpoint Security
Threat actors associated with Qilin  and Warlock ransomware operations have been observed using the bring your own vulnerable driver ( BYOVD ) technique to silence security tools running on compromised hosts, according to findings from Cisco Talos and Trend Micro. Qilin attacks analyzed by Talos have been found to deploy a malicious DLL named "msimg32.dll," which initiates a multi-stage infection chain to disable endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions. The DLL, launched via DLL side-loading, is capable of terminating more than 300 EDR drivers from almost every security vendor in the market. "The first stage consists of a PE loader responsible for preparing the execution environment for the EDR killer component," Talos researchers Takahiro Takeda and Holger Unterbrink said . "This secondary payload is embedded within the loader in an encrypted form." The DLL loader implements an array of techniques to evade de...
New ForumTroll Phishing Attacks Target Russian Scholars Using Fake eLibrary Emails

New ForumTroll Phishing Attacks Target Russian Scholars Using Fake eLibrary Emails

Dec 17, 2025 Vulnerability / Malware
The threat actor linked to Operation ForumTroll has been attributed to a fresh set of phishing attacks targeting individuals within Russia, according to Kaspersky. The Russian cybersecurity vendor said it detected the new activity in October 2025. The origins of the threat actor are presently unknown. "While the spring cyberattacks focused on organizations, the fall campaign honed in on specific individuals: scholars in the field of political science, international relations, and global economics, working at major Russian universities and research institutions," security researcher Georgy Kucherin said . Operation ForumTroll refers to a series of sophisticated phishing attacks exploiting a then-zero-day vulnerability in Google Chrome (CVE-2025-2783) to deliver the LeetAgent backdoor and a spyware implant known as Dante. The latest attack wave also commences with emails that claimed to be from eLibrary, a Russian scientific electronic library, with the messages sent f...
Chinese Threat Actors Exploit ToolShell SharePoint Flaw Weeks After Microsoft's July Patch

Chinese Threat Actors Exploit ToolShell SharePoint Flaw Weeks After Microsoft's July Patch

Oct 22, 2025 Cyber Espionage / Vulnerability
Threat actors with ties to China exploited the ToolShell security vulnerability in Microsoft SharePoint to breach a telecommunications company in the Middle East after it was publicly disclosed and patched in July 2025. Also targeted were government departments in an African country, as well as government agencies in South America, a university in the U.S., as well as likely a state technology agency in an African country, a government department in the Middle East, and a finance company in a European country. According to Broadcom's Symantec Threat Hunter Team, the attacks involved the exploitation of CVE-2025-53770 , a now-patched security flaw in on-premise SharePoint servers that could be used to bypass authentication and achieve remote code execution. CVE-2025-53770, assessed to be a patch bypass for CVE-2025-49704 and CVE-2025-49706, has been weaponized as a zero-day by three Chinese threat groups , including Linen Typhoon (aka Budworm), Violet Typhoon (aka Sheathminer)...

Storm-2603 Deploys DNS-Controlled Backdoor in Warlock and LockBit Ransomware Attacks

Storm-2603 Deploys DNS-Controlled Backdoor in Warlock and LockBit Ransomware Attacks

Aug 01, 2025 Threat Intelligence / Ransomware
The threat actor linked to the exploitation of the recently disclosed security flaws in Microsoft SharePoint Server is using a bespoke command-and-control (C2) framework called AK47 C2 (also spelled ak47c2) in its operations. The framework includes at least two different types of clients, HTTP-based and Domain Name System ( DNS )-based, which have been dubbed AK47HTTP and AK47DNS, respectively, by Check Point Research. The activity has been attributed to Storm-2603 , which, according to Microsoft, is a suspected China-based threat actor that has leveraged the SharePoint flaws – CVE-2025-49706 and CVE-2025-49704 (aka ToolShell) – to deploy Warlock (aka X2anylock) ransomware. A previously unreported threat cluster, evidence gathered following an analysis of VirusTotal artifacts shows that the group may have been active since at least March 2025, deploying ransomware families like LockBit Black and Warlock together – something that's not observed commonly among established e-c...
