Identity Lifecycle Management Wasn't Built for AI Agents

Identity Lifecycle Management Wasn't Built for AI Agents

Jul 02, 2026 Identity Governance / Enterprise Security
Identity lifecycle management was architected around a person with an employment record, a manager, and a departure date. AI agents have none of those. As autonomous principals proliferate across enterprise environments, the governance model built for humans develops structural blind spots that traditional IGA tools weren't designed to detect. This guide covers where that model breaks, what it fails to govern, and what extending it to agents actually requires. What Identity Lifecycle Management Was Designed to Handle To understand why identity lifecycle management breaks down around AI agents, you need to understand what it was built to do well and who it was built for. The entire architecture rests on a single foundational assumption: every identity maps to a human being whose organizational status changes through documented, HR-driven events. The identity lifecycle management process governs access from an identity's first provisioning event through every modificatio...
Stop Your Legacy Infrastructure from Hijacking Your AI Agents

Stop Your Legacy Infrastructure from Hijacking Your AI Agents

Jun 22, 2026 Exposure Management / AI Security
Earlier this month, I spoke at the Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit about a blind spot most security programs are still not accounting for - how attackers are circumventing AI security programs by using legacy infrastructure to hijack AI agents. AI adoption is moving faster than security programs can account for. Roughly 71% of organizations are piloting AI agents across their enterprise applications, and 31% have already moved them into production workflows. For this reason, organizations are legitimately pouring resources into securing AI workloads against model poisoning, prompt injection, data leakage, and other emerging threats. Yet this focus misses everything underneath the AI layer. Because an unpatched server, a misconfigured Active Directory permission, or a cached credential on a developer's machine are exposures that give attackers a direct route to everything your AI agents depend on - knowledge bases, cloud storage, Lambda functions, SaaS integrati...
Shrinking the IAM Attack Surface through Identity Visibility and Intelligence Platforms (IVIP)

Shrinking the IAM Attack Surface through Identity Visibility and Intelligence Platforms (IVIP)

Jun 03, 2026 Enterprise Security / AI Agents
The Fragmented State of Modern Enterprise Identity Enterprise IAM is approaching a breaking point. As organizations scale, identity becomes increasingly fragmented across thousands of applications, decentralized teams, machine identities, and autonomous systems. The result is Identity Dark Matter: identity activity that sits outside the visibility of centralized IAM and beyond the reach of security teams. According to Orchid Security 's analysis , 46% of enterprise identity activity occurs outside centralized IAM visibility. In other words, nearly half of the enterprise identity surface may be operating unseen. This hidden layer includes unmanaged applications, local accounts, opaque authentication flows, and over-permissioned non-human identities. It is further amplified by disconnected tools, siloed ownership, and the rapid rise of Agentic AI. The consequence is a widening gap between what the security organizations think they have and the access that actually exists. Th...

Agent AI is Coming. Are You Ready?

Agent AI is Coming. Are You Ready?

May 20, 2026 Identity Security / Enterprise Security
New Industry Data Just Released Suggests Not. On May 19th, 2026, Orchid Security released the results of our Identity Gap: Snapshot 2026. Among the findings, "identity dark matter" (the unseen, unmanaged elements of identity) now overshadows the visible elements 57% vs. 43%. And it couldn't have occurred at a worse time, with enterprises embracing Agent AI with both arms (and unfortunately, as Orchid co-founder Robert Wiseman explains, more than one eye closed).
