Weedhack Malware Spreads via Fake Minecraft Clients and SEO Poisoning

Weedhack Malware Spreads via Fake Minecraft Clients and SEO Poisoning

Aug 24, 2026 Malware / SEO Poisoning
Cybersecurity researchers have found that several websites are still actively distributing a malware family known as Weedhack to gamers by masquerading as Minecraft clients. McAfee Labs said it detected and blocked more than 6,300 attempts to access malicious sites, adding that it found lookalike gaming websites designed to mimic legitimate projects, including branding, feature lists, FAQs, installation guides, developer credits, and links to genuine GitHub repositories. Notably, one of the sites has been built using Lovable , an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered website builder, highlighting how readily available tools can further lower the barrier and make it easier to launch convincing new malicious sites. Weedhack was first documented by the cybersecurity company back in June 2026, detailing its use of SEO poisoning and YouTube to redirect traffic to the bogus domains. The attack triggers a multi-stage sequence that culminates in the deployment of JAR payloads that can ...
Trojanized Newtonsoft.Json Fork Hides Game-Rigging Code in a Working Library

Trojanized Newtonsoft.Json Fork Hides Game-Rigging Code in a Working Library

Jul 22, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a NuGet typosquat that's unlike the typical information-stealing malware distributed via package registries: usual info-stealers: it's designed to rig live game results on Digitain. The package, named " Newtonsoftt.Json.Net ," masquerades as the Newtonsoft.Json library and is a trojanized fork. Seven versions of the package have been published to the NuGet repository: 11.0.4, 11.0.5, 11.0.7, 11.0.8, 11.0.9, 11.0.10, and 11.0.11. The package has been downloaded about 1,200 times to date. The package has been unlisted by its owner MagicalPuff96, meaning it will not be surfaced via a search on NuGet. However, the artifacts are still available for download from the registry. "The trojan rigs Digitain, an online betting platform, and in later generations, exfiltrates rigged round results to an attacker-controlled server, utilizing the header X-Seq-ApiKey: theperfectheist2025," according to JFrog . What's not...
GitVenom Malware Steals $456K in Bitcoin Using Fake GitHub Projects to Hijack Wallets

GitVenom Malware Steals $456K in Bitcoin Using Fake GitHub Projects to Hijack Wallets

Feb 25, 2025 Gaming / Threat Intelligence
Cybersecurity researchers are calling attention to an ongoing campaign that's targeting gamers and cryptocurrency investors under the guise of open-source projects hosted on GitHub . The campaign, which spans hundreds of repositories, has been dubbed GitVenom by Kaspersky. "The infected projects include an automation instrument for interacting with Instagram accounts, a Telegram bot that enables the remote management of Bitcoin wallets and a crack tool to play the Valorant game," the Russian cybersecurity vendor said. "All of this alleged project functionality was fake, and cybercriminals behind the campaign stole personal and banking data and hijacked cryptowallet addresses from the clipboard." The malicious activity has facilitated the theft of 5 bitcoins, approximately worth $456,600 as of writing. It's believed the campaign has been ongoing for at least two years, when some of the fake projects were published. A majority of the infection attempts...

Trojanized Game Installers Deploy Cryptocurrency Miner in Large-Scale StaryDobry Attack

Trojanized Game Installers Deploy Cryptocurrency Miner in Large-Scale StaryDobry Attack

Feb 19, 2025 Windows Security / Malware
Users who are on the lookout for popular games were lured into downloading trojanized installers that led to the deployment of a cryptocurrency miner on compromised Windows hosts. The large-scale activity has been codenamed StaryDobry by Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky, which first detected it on December 31, 2024. It lasted for a month. Targets of the campaign include individuals and businesses worldwide, with Kaspersky's telemetry finding higher infection concentrations in Russia, Brazil, Germany, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. "This approach helped the threat actors make the most out of the miner implant by targeting powerful gaming machines capable of sustaining mining activity," researchers Tatyana Shishkova and Kirill Korchemny said in an analysis published Tuesday. The XMRig cryptocurrency miner campaign employs popular simulator and physics games like BeamNG.drive, Garry's Mod, Dyson Sphere Program, Universe Sandbox, and Plutocracy as lures to initi...
Gcore DDoS Radar Reveals 56% YoY Increase in DDoS Attacks

Gcore DDoS Radar Reveals 56% YoY Increase in DDoS Attacks

Feb 11, 2025 IoT Security / Cloud Security
Gcore’s latest DDoS Radar report analyzes attack data from Q3–Q4 2024, revealing a 56% YoY rise in the total number of DDoS attacks with the largest attack peaking at a record 2 Tbps. The financial services sector saw the most dramatic increase, with a 117% rise in attacks, while gaming remained the most-targeted industry. This period’s findings emphasize the need for robust, adaptive DDoS mitigation as attacks become more precise and frequent. Let’s dive into the numbers. Key takeaways: the future of DDoS defense Here are the four key takeaways from Gcore Radar: DDoS attacks are increasing in volume and sophistication. The 17% growth in total attacks and new peak volume of 2 Tbps highlight the need for advanced protection. Financial services face growing risks. With a 117% increase in attacks, this sector requires heightened security measures. Shorter, high-intensity attacks are now the norm. Traditional mitigation approaches must adapt to rapid burst attacks that can evad...
Chinese Actor SecShow Conducts Massive DNS Probing on Global Scale

Chinese Actor SecShow Conducts Massive DNS Probing on Global Scale

Jun 11, 2024 DDoS Attack / Cyber Espionage
Cybersecurity researchers have shed more light on a Chinese actor codenamed SecShow that has been observed conducting Domain Name System (DNS) on a global scale since at least June 2023. The adversary, according to Infoblox security researchers Dr. Renée Burton and Dave Mitchell, operates from the China Education and Research Network ( CERNET ), a project funded by the Chinese government. "These probes seek to find and measure DNS responses at open resolvers," they said in a report published last week. "The end goal of the SecShow operations is unknown, but the information that is gathered can be used for malicious activities and is only for the benefit of the actor." That said, there is some evidence to suggest that it may have been linked to some kind of academic research related to "performing measurements using IP Address Spoofing Techniques on domains within secshow.net" modeled on the same approach as the Closed Resolver Project . This, howeve...
