Gamaredon Expands Ukraine Attacks with New Malware and Cloud Service Abuse

июн. 29, 2026 Cloud Security / Malware
A Russian advanced persistent threat (APT) group has continued to evolve and expand its malware arsenal as part of its ongoing cyber onslaught against Ukraine throughout 2025. Slovakian cybersecurity company ESET said it observed 35 distinct spear-phishing campaigns mounted by Gamaredon against new targets, with most of them taking place in the second half of the year. Primary targets of these efforts include Ukrainian governmental and military institutions. "Throughout 2025, Gamaredon stayed highly active and remained focused solely on Ukraine," ESET said . "The group's ultimate goal continues to be the exfiltration of sensitive information and other critical data that could be exploited to support Russian interests in the ongoing war in Ukraine." The spear-phishing campaigns make use of archive attachments or XHTML files that employ HTML smuggling to deliver malicious HTA downloaders that are responsible for dropping additional payloads, such as PteroS...
GamaCopy Mimics Gamaredon Tactics in Cyber Espionage Targeting Russian Entities

GamaCopy Mimics Gamaredon Tactics in Cyber Espionage Targeting Russian Entities

янв. 27, 2025 Cyber Espionage / Threat Intelligence
A previously unknown threat actor has been observed copying the tradecraft associated with the Kremlin-aligned Gamaredon hacking group in its cyber attacks targeting Russian-speaking entities. The campaign has been attributed to a threat cluster dubbed GamaCopy , which is assessed to share overlaps with another hacking group named Core Werewolf , also tracked as Awaken Likho and PseudoGamaredon. According to the Knownsec 404 Advanced Threat Intelligence team, the attacks leverage content related to military facilities as lures to drop UltraVNC, allowing threat actors to remotely access the compromised hosts. "The TTP (Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures) of this organization imitates that of the Gamaredon organization which conducts attacks against Ukraine," the company said in a report published last week. The disclosure arrives nearly four months after Kaspersky revealed that Russian government agencies and industrial entities have been the target of Core Werewolf, ...

Gamaredon Deploys Android Spyware "BoneSpy" and "PlainGnome" in Former Soviet States

дек. 12, 2024 Mobile Security / Cyber Espionage
The Russia-linked state-sponsored threat actor tracked as Gamaredon has been attributed to two new Android spyware tools called BoneSpy and PlainGnome , marking the first time the adversary has been discovered using mobile-only malware families in its attack campaigns. "BoneSpy and PlainGnome target former Soviet states and focus on Russian-speaking victims," Lookout said in an analysis. "Both BoneSpy and PlainGnome collect data such as SMS messages, call logs, phone call audio, photos from device cameras, device location, and contact lists." Gamaredon , also called Aqua Blizzard, Armageddon, BlueAlpha, Hive0051, Iron Tilden, Primitive Bear, Shuckworm, Trident Ursa, UAC-0010, UNC530, and Winterflounder, is a hacking group affiliated with Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). Last week, Recorded Future's Insikt Group revealed the threat actor's use of Cloudflare Tunnels as a tactic to conceal its staging infrastructure hosting malicious payload...

Hackers Leveraging Cloudflare Tunnels, DNS Fast-Flux to Hide GammaDrop Malware

дек. 06, 2024 Malware / Threat Intelligence
The threat actor known as Gamaredon has been observed leveraging Cloudflare Tunnels as a tactic to conceal its staging infrastructure hosting a malware called GammaDrop. The activity is part of an ongoing spear-phishing campaign targeting Ukrainian entities since at least early 2024 that's designed to drop the Visual Basic Script malware, Recorded Future's Insikt Group said in a new analysis. The cybersecurity company is tracking the threat actor under the name BlueAlpha, which is also known as Aqua Blizzard, Armageddon, Hive0051, Iron Tilden, Primitive Bear, Shuckworm, Trident Ursa, UAC-0010, UNC530, and Winterflounder. The group, believed to be active since 2014, is affiliated with Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). "BlueAlpha has recently started using Cloudflare Tunnels to conceal staging infrastructure used by GammaDrop , an increasingly popular technique used by cybercriminal threat groups to deploy malware," Insikt Group noted . "BlueAl...
Russian Cyber Espionage Group Deploys LitterDrifter USB Worm in Targeted Attacks

Russian Cyber Espionage Group Deploys LitterDrifter USB Worm in Targeted Attacks

нояб. 18, 2023 Cyber Attack / USB Worm
Russian cyber espionage actors affiliated with the Federal Security Service (FSB) have been observed using a USB propagating worm called  LitterDrifter  in attacks targeting Ukrainian entities. Check Point, which  detailed  Gamaredon's (aka Aqua Blizzard, Iron Tilden, Primitive Bear, Shuckworm, and Winterflounder) latest tactics, branded the group as engaging in large-scale campaigns that are followed by "data collection efforts aimed at specific targets, whose selection is likely motivated by espionage goals." The LitterDrifter worm packs in two main features: automatically spreading the malware via connected USB drives as well as communicating with the threat actor's command-and-control (C&C) servers. It's also suspected to be an evolution of a PowerShell-based USB worm that was previously  disclosed  by Symantec in June 2023. Written in VBS, the spreader module is responsible for distributing the worm as a hidden file in a USB drive together with...
