14 Trojanized npm Packages Drop RedC2 4.0 Linux Backdoor With AI-Assisted C2

14 Trojanized npm Packages Drop RedC2 4.0 Linux Backdoor With AI-Assisted C2

Aug 21, 2026 Malware / Threat Intelligence
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a set of trojanized npm packages that masquerade as working calendar and streak utilities but are engineered to stealthily deliver an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Linux implant dubbed RedC2 4.0. "When the module loads, it locates the bundled binary, marks it executable, and launches it as a detached background process," TrendAI, Trend Micro's enterprise cybersecurity business, said in a report published Thursday. "No install hook function call is needed; a single import anywhere in the dependency graph, even a transitive one, is enough to execute the payload." The list of identified packages is below - streak-metrics-math@1.0.0,1.0.1 kit-map-vim@1.0.0 streak-map-cache@1.0.0 streak-map-kit@1.0.0 map-streak-kit@1.0.0 streak-cache-map@1.0.0 streak-calc-metrics@1.0.0 streak-calc-math@1.0.0 streak-math-abz@1.0.0 streak-metricsaz@1.0.0 streak-math-metrics@1.0.0 streak-metrica...
Rust Supply Chain Attack Puts Build-Time Malware in Crates with 245 Million Downloads

Rust Supply Chain Attack Puts Build-Time Malware in Crates with 245 Million Downloads

Aug 20, 2026 Software Security / Supply Chain Attack
The Rust Project has deleted malicious versions of three widely used Rust crates from crates.io after a compromised maintainer account published releases that added a typosquatted dependency whose build script downloaded and executed a remote payload during compilation. The affected releases are arrayref 0.3.10, internment 0.8.7, and append-only-vec 0.1.9, all published from the same owner account on August 20, 2026, and all removed within 86 to 107 minutes. Because the malicious code sat in the build script of the injected dependency, building a project that resolved it was sufficient to run the payload, and nothing from the crates themselves had to be called. Developers are advised to search ~/.cargo/registry/cache for the deleted crate files and to pin arrayref at 0.3.9 or earlier, after the Rust Security Response Team unyanked the maliciously-yanked versions during the response. There is no patched version, no CVE identifier has been assigned, and the RustSec advisories...
Isolated-vm Flaw Lets Sandboxed JavaScript Escape to Host for Potential RCE

Isolated-vm Flaw Lets Sandboxed JavaScript Escape to Host for Potential RCE

Aug 20, 2026 Vulnerability / Application Security
Cybersecurity researchers have disclosed a critical security flaw in isolated-vm , a popular open-source sandbox with more than 2,900 stars and 190 forks on GitHub, that could allow attackers to escape the confines of the isolated environment. The vulnerability (" GHSA-864f-rcv7-6rh4 "), which has yet to be assigned a CVE identifier, impacts all versions of the library before and including 7.0.0. It has been patched in versions 6.2.0 and 7.0.1 released earlier this month. Isolated-vm is a Node.js library for running untrusted JavaScript inside a V8 Isolate , an independent instance of the Google V8 JavaScript engine, allowing multiple sandboxed JavaScript environments to run concurrently without sharing data or interfering with each other. The npm package has witnessed nearly 1 million downloads over the past week. Because each V8 Isolate has a separate state and maintains its own heap, it is not possible to directly pass JavaScript objects from the main Node.js threa...

Malicious MCP Servers Can Split Instructions to Make AI Coding Agents Exfiltrate Secrets

Malicious MCP Servers Can Split Instructions to Make AI Coding Agents Exfiltrate Secrets

Aug 11, 2026 AI Security / Cyber Attack
A malicious tool server connected to an AI coding assistant can quietly walk off with SSH keys, environment secrets, source code, and customer data without ever sending one obviously harmful instruction. The trick can work even after a blunt version of the same theft is refused: split the request into fragments that each look routine, place them in channels the assistant already uses, and let the agent stitch them together and send the data back. The attack targets coding tools that connect to outside servers over the Model Context Protocol (MCP), the open standard that lets AI assistants call external tools. A malicious MCP server can put one fragment in a tool description and another in a tool result; some setups also support server-initiated sampling. MCP does preserve structured tool and result boundaries. But ASSET Research Group's tests show agents can still combine instructions across them in the same working context, so no single fragment has to contain the whole mal...
Solidity Pro VS Code Extensions Steal Crypto Wallets, API Keys, and Credentials

Solidity Pro VS Code Extensions Steal Crypto Wallets, API Keys, and Credentials

Aug 10, 2026 Malware / Cybercrime
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged a malicious Microsoft Visual Studio Code (VS Code) extension named Solidity Pro ("solidity-pro") that has been observed delivering a browser wallet and credential stealer. The names of the extensions are below - helper-beeps.solidity-pro web3devtoolsx.solidity-pro Although neither of the extensions is now available on Open VSX, the GitHub repository for " web3devtoolsx/solidity-pro " continues to remain accessible as of writing. According to Yeeth Security , early iterations of the extensions – from 1.0.0 through v2.4.x – were found to beacon to Cloudflare Workers endpoints to retrieve an encrypted Python payload and execute it. Subsequent versions starting with v3.0.0, on the other hand, have shifted to a full-blown information stealer that can collect browser profiles, crypto wallets, source-control tokens, API keys, SSH keys, and Telegram bot tokens. The captured data is then exfiltrated via a Telegram bot u...
Nearly 800 Malicious npm Packages Deliver Cross-Platform RAT and Infostealer

Nearly 800 Malicious npm Packages Deliver Cross-Platform RAT and Infostealer

Aug 07, 2026 Malware / Browser Security
A cluster of nearly 800 malicious packages has been published to the npm registry as part of a new campaign designed to deliver cross-platform malware targeting Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. "These packages appear to use AI slop squatted, or randomly generated typo-squatting package names, but all of them deliver a powerful RAT and infostealer payload," OpenSourceMalware researcher Paul McCarty said . Unlike other npm-oriented software supply chain attacks that make use of lifecycle hooks like preinstall or postinstall to trigger the execution of malicious code, the newly identified packages come with a README that instructs developers to load them with require(), a built-in function to import modules, local files, and third-party packages. The attack leads to the execution of a downloader named WEL1DROPPER , which, when executed, identifies the host operating system and processor architecture and fetches a compatible payload from one of the three Cloudflare Workers...
AWS, Google, and Vercel Agent Flaws Let Attackers Trigger Tools Without Running the Model

AWS, Google, and Vercel Agent Flaws Let Attackers Trigger Tools Without Running the Model

Aug 06, 2026 DevSecOps / Vulnerability
Security flaws in agent infrastructure from Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google, and Vercel let untrusted or forged instructions reach an agent's tools with no check that a model turn had authorized them. In several of the attack paths, the model never ran at all, so system prompts, content filters, and model-level guardrails never got a chance to intervene. The affected products include Amazon Bedrock AgentCore's InvokeHarness API, Google's Agent Development Kit (ADK) for Python, and the Vercel AI SDK harness packages for the Codex and OpenCode coding agents. AWS has fixed the managed service, Google addressed the issues in ADK 2.5.0, and Vercel patched @ai-sdk/harness-codex in version 1.0.29 and @ai-sdk/harness-opencode in version 1.0.28. These are not identical vulnerabilities and do not share the same attack conditions. AWS involved an authenticated remote request, Google's paths required attacker-controlled session events or user-authored function calls, and V...
Paperclip AI Flaws Let Attackers Run Host Commands via Malicious Agent Imports

Paperclip AI Flaws Let Attackers Run Host Commands via Malicious Agent Imports

Aug 05, 2026 Vulnerability / Web Security
Two security flaws in Paperclip could let attackers execute commands on a network server or a developer's computer. Paperclip is an open-source control plane for teams of artificial intelligence (AI) agents, and both paths rely on importing a malicious agent and starting it. A third flaw could expose sensitive data and control-plane details through application programming interface (API) routes that did not enforce the expected access checks. The more severe server-side path, tracked as CVE-2026-41679 (CVSS score: 10.0), requires no pre-existing account or victim interaction against network-accessible deployments using authenticated mode with the default registration configuration. The second path, tracked as GHSA-x8hx-rhr2-9rf7 (CVSS score: 9.6), requires a user to open an attacker-controlled page while Paperclip is running in its default local_trusted mode. The source tagged as Paperclip v2026.416.0 contains the import-authorization fix and hostname-validation guard di...
Trojanized npm Packages Employ NullReceiver Tactic to Decode C2 IP from Blockchain

Trojanized npm Packages Employ NullReceiver Tactic to Decode C2 IP from Blockchain

Aug 05, 2026 Cyber Espionage / Threat Intelligence
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged an evolution of the EtherHiding blockchain-based command-and-control (C2) technique that conceals the C2 server IP address inside a made-up destination address of a completely empty Ethereum transfer. The new dead drop resolver approach, observed in two trojanized npm packages "bianira-ui" and "fluid-type-ui," has been codenamed NullReceiver by OpenSourceMalware, which has described it as a "deliberate improvement on EtherHiding." The activity has been linked to North Korea. The packages are currently no longer available for download from npm. However, statistics show that they have been downloaded a few hundred times since they were first published on July 28, 2026 - bianira-ui (109 downloads), uploaded by an npm user named "npmuser1101" fluid-type-ui (587 downloads), uploaded by an npm user named "npmuser3002" EtherHiding was first publicly documented by Guardio Labs in October...
Critical Gitea Flaw Let Unauthenticated Attackers Read Server Files via Org-Mode Markup

Critical Gitea Flaw Let Unauthenticated Attackers Read Server Files via Org-Mode Markup

Aug 05, 2026 Vulnerability / DevOps
An unauthenticated attacker can read any file the service account can access on Gitea , the self-hosted Git platform, in versions 1.22.1 through 1.27.0. No login, no repository write access. A public repository and crafted Org-mode markup are enough. The flaw is fixed in Gitea 1.27.1. The file-read flaw is tracked as CVE-2026-59774 , rated Critical with a CVSS score of 9.8, and received its formal advisory on August 2. Gitea 1.27.1 also patches CVE-2026-60004 , a separate remote code execution bug covered in a prior THN report . Gitea said Cloud instances would be upgraded automatically during the release maintenance window. Self-hosted administrators should move to 1.27.1 immediately. The file-read bug is not direct one-request remote code execution. Gitea says it can become command execution if an attacker reads app.ini , extracts INTERNAL_TOKEN , injects a Git hook through the internal logger, and triggers that hook during an anonymous clone. That chain is described in Gite...
Open VSX Removes 77 Malicious Evil Twin Extensions Exfiltrating Developer Data

Open VSX Removes 77 Malicious Evil Twin Extensions Exfiltrating Developer Data

Aug 05, 2026 Software Supply Chain / Artificial Intelligence
A cluster of 77 extensions on the Open VSX marketplace has been found to impersonate legitimate developer tools while transmitting information about the systems and development environments on which they were installed. The "evil twin" extensions were uploaded to the repository between July 26 and August 1, 2026, according to Manifold Security. The packages have been removed from Open VSX as of August 3, 2026. "In most of the packages it sends little more than the machine's hostname," security researchers Ax Sharma and Cody Nash said . "In nineteen of them it sends a detailed description of the machine, the repository open in the editor, and the CI system the editor is running inside." Of the identified extensions, 58 have been described as lightweight tools designed to exfiltrate the hostname and, in some cases, the workspace folder name or editor version. The rest are reconnaissance payloads that transmit the developer-related information: l...
Keyv-Linked npm Worm Poisons Hundreds of Packages, Plants Claude Code and VS Code Hooks

Keyv-Linked npm Worm Poisons Hundreds of Packages, Plants Claude Code and VS Code Hooks

Aug 04, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Malware
A credential-stealing npm worm that first appeared in keyv@6.0.0 spread beyond the Keyv and Cacheable namespaces into hundreds of packages across multiple organizations on August 4, 2026. SafeDep verified 353 poisoned versions across 79 package names in the npm registry. Its monitoring put the wider footprint at 442 versions across 353 names, while Aikido later reported at least 868 packages across 1,381 versions. Neither broader total was independently reproducible from a complete public list at the reporting cutoff. The malicious release used a preinstall script to run a credential-stealing bundle inside developer and continuous integration (CI) environments. SafeDep and Socket say it can harvest repository, package registry, cloud and private-key material, then use available npm publishing access to poison more packages. The Keyv repository also retained separate Claude Code and Visual Studio Code (VS Code) hooks that can execute the payload once a user trusts the workspace...

18 Malicious npm Packages Deliver Cross-Platform RAT to Alibaba Tool Users

Aug 03, 2026 Malware / Software Supply Chain
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a new set of malicious npm packages that target users of Alibaba developer tools with a cross-platform remote access trojan (RAT) as part of a sophisticated, targeted software supply chain attack targeting Chinese-speaking environments. One of the packages in question is " lib-mtop ," an unscoped package with the same name as a private Alibaba package under the "@ali" scope. Although the npm package was first published sometime in November 2023 with no functionality, three new versions (v1.0.1, v1.0.2, and v1.0.3) were uploaded earlier this March and April. It's currently not clear if this was the result of a maintainer account takeover or the project developer opting to go rogue. Regardless of how the malicious changes were pushed, the newly added changes feature a loader that's designed to fetch a remote JavaScript payload using curl and then execute it. The same maintainer account " ch4ce ," whic...
Two Compromised joyfill npm Packages Run RAT When Imported Into Node.js

Two Compromised joyfill npm Packages Run RAT When Imported Into Node.js

Jul 29, 2026 Malware / Developer Security
Beta release versions of two npm packages in the @joyfill namespace have been compromised to deliver a remote access trojan (RAT) associated with the DEV#POPPER malware family. The list of affected packages is as follows - @joyfill/layouts@0.1.2-2773.beta.0 @joyfill/components@4.0.0-rc24-2773-beta.4 The two packages "contain an import-time JavaScript implant that resolves encrypted code through Tron, Aptos, and BNB Smart Chain transactions," Socket said in an analysis. Unlike other malicious packages that are triggered via an npm lifecycle hook, the implant delivered as part of the JavaScript libraries runs when Node.js loads the CommonJS package entry point. It's worth noting that the use of a multi-blockchain resolver structure comprising Tron, Aptos, and BNB Smart Chain (BSC) has been linked to a threat cluster tracked as PolinRider , which is assessed to be related to Contagious Interview . Earlier this month, Checkmarx and OpenSourceMalware highl...

Trojanized Newtonsoft.Json Fork Hides Game-Rigging Code in a Working Library

Jul 22, 2026 Supply Chain Attack / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a NuGet typosquat that's unlike the typical information-stealing malware distributed via package registries: usual info-stealers: it's designed to rig live game results on Digitain. The package, named " Newtonsoftt.Json.Net ," masquerades as the Newtonsoft.Json library and is a trojanized fork. Seven versions of the package have been published to the NuGet repository: 11.0.4, 11.0.5, 11.0.7, 11.0.8, 11.0.9, 11.0.10, and 11.0.11. The package has been downloaded about 1,200 times to date. The package has been unlisted by its owner MagicalPuff96, meaning it will not be surfaced via a search on NuGet. However, the artifacts are still available for download from the registry. "The trojan rigs Digitain, an online betting platform, and in later generations, exfiltrates rigged round results to an attacker-controlled server, utilizing the header X-Seq-ApiKey: theperfectheist2025," according to JFrog . What's not...
Microsoft Azure DevOps MCP Flaw Lets Hidden PR Comments Hijack AI Review Agents

Microsoft Azure DevOps MCP Flaw Lets Hidden PR Comments Hijack AI Review Agents

Jul 22, 2026 AI Security / DevSecOps
A single invisible comment in an Azure DevOps pull request can turn a reviewer's own AI coding agent against them, driving it into projects the attacker has no rights to reach and quietly leaking what it finds. The flaw is in Microsoft's official Azure DevOps MCP server , and it works because one of its tools returns pull request descriptions without a prompt-injection guardrail the company had already applied to others. Agentic Runtime Security firm Manifold Security detailed the confused-deputy bug this week. Microsoft ships the server so AI agents can read and operate Azure DevOps for a user, across pull requests, pipelines, wikis, and work items, all with the user's own permissions. That is the whole problem: content other people wrote can become instructions the agent acts on. Azure DevOps PR descriptions accept Markdown, which allows HTML comments. In the web UI, an HTML comment (<!-- ... -->) renders as nothing, so a reviewer scrolling the description s...
AWS Kiro Flaw Let a Poisoned Web Page Rewrite Its Config and Run Code

AWS Kiro Flaw Let a Poisoned Web Page Rewrite Its Config and Run Code

Jul 21, 2026 AI Security / Vulnerability
Hidden text on a web page was enough to make Kiro , AWS's agentic coding IDE, rewrite its own configuration file and run an attacker's code on a developer's machine, with no approval step able to stop it. Intezer, in research with Kodem Security, found that a request as ordinary as asking Kiro to summarize a page could end in remote code execution. AWS has patched the issue and says it is covered by CVE-2026-10591. Kiro's safety model rests on a human clicking "allow." The agent can run shell commands, fetch URLs, and edit files, and the design assumes a developer reviews anything risky before it happens. That approval step is the security boundary, and the flaw let an attacker slip past it without the developer ever being offered a choice. The weak point was the file that tells Kiro which external tools to load. Kiro reads its list of Model Context Protocol servers, and the exact command used to start each one, from ~/.kiro/settings/mcp.json. When th...
FakeGit Campaign Uses 7,600 GitHub Repositories to Spread SmartLoader Malware

FakeGit Campaign Uses 7,600 GitHub Repositories to Spread SmartLoader Malware

Jul 20, 2026 Malware / Artificial Intelligence
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered nearly 7,600 malicious GitHub repositories, out of which more than 800 pose as artificial intelligence (AI) skills or Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers to deliver a malware family known as SmartLoader as part of an ongoing campaign codenamed FakeGit . "FakeGit uses copied projects, lookalike developer profiles, convincing READMEs, and malicious ZIP files to deliver SmartLoader malware," Oleg Zaytsev, lead security researcher at Island, said in a report shared with The Hacker News. The end goal of these attacks is to leverage the access afforded by SmartLoader to establish persistence and push secondary payloads, such as StealC, an information stealer capable of harvesting a wide range of data from compromised systems. It's worth mentioning here that the use of trojanized MCP servers to distribute SmartLoader and StealC was flagged earlier this year by Straiker AI and subsequently by Derp.ca . But a concerning aspect ...

SleeperGem Uses Three Malicious RubyGems Packages to Target Developer Machines

Jul 20, 2026 Malware / Application Security
Cybersecurity researchers have flagged a new software supply chain attack codenamed SleeperGem targeting the Ruby ecosystem after three malicious gems were published to RubyGems with the end goal of serving additional payloads. The rogue gems are listed below - git_credential_manager (versions 2.8.0, 2.8.1, 2.8.2, 2.8.3) - Published on July 18, 2026 Dendreo (versions 1.1.3, 1.1.4) - Published on October 14, 2017 fastlane-plugin-run_tests_firebase_testlab (version 0.3.2) - Published on February 06, 2018 "Each malicious release is a loader," StepSecurity said in an analysis. "It fetches a second stage from an attacker controlled Forgejo host, checks whether it is running in a build system and skips if it is, and on a developer machine it drops a native daemon and installs persistence." One aspect of the attack that immediately stands out is that "git_credential_manager" impersonates the official Microsoft Git Credential Manager, while t...

Seven Malicious Vite npm Packages Use Blockchain C2 to Deliver a RAT

Jul 17, 2026 Software Supply Chain / Malware
Cybersecurity researchers have discovered a cluster of seven malicious npm packages targeting the Vite frontend tooling ecosystem as part of a software supply chain attack. The malicious package campaign, codenamed ViteVenom by Checkmarx, marks an expansion of ChainVeil , which was observed using an "unprecedented" four-tier blockchain-based command-and-control (C2) infrastructure spanning Tron, Aptos, and Binance Smart Chain to deliver a remote access trojan (RAT) capable of spawning a reverse shell, credential harvesting, file exfiltration, and persistent backdoor injection. "This tactic makes disabling or destroying the C2 infrastructure extremely difficult," Checkmarx researcher Pavan Gudimalla said in an analysis published last month. The activity has been attributed to a threat actor named SuccessKey, with evidence of malicious activity detected as far back as February 27, 2026, when cryptocurrency wallets linked to ViteVenom were activated. While the ...
