Massive 7.3 Tbps DDoS Attack Delivers 37.4 TB in 45 Seconds, Targeting Hosting Provider

Jun 20, 2025 Cyber Attack / Botnet
Cloudflare on Thursday said it autonomously blocked the largest distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack ever recorded, which hit a peak of 7.3 terabits per second (Tbps). The attack, which was detected in mid-May 2025, targeted an unnamed hosting provider. "Hosting providers and critical Internet infrastructure have increasingly become targets of DDoS attacks," Cloudflare's Omer Yoachimik said . "The 7.3 Tbps attack delivered 37.4 terabytes in 45 seconds." Earlier this January, the web infrastructure and security company said it had mitigated a 5.6 Tbps DDoS attack aimed at an unnamed internet service provider (ISP) from Eastern Asia. The attack originated from a Mirai-variant botnet in October 2024. Then in April 2025, Cloudflare revealed it defended against a massive 6.5 Tbps flood that likely emanated from Eleven11bot, a botnet comprising roughly 30,000 webcams and video recorders. The hyper-volumetric attack lasted about 49 seconds. The 7.3 Tbps...

Top-Rated Chinese AI App DeepSeek Limits Registrations Amid Cyberattacks

Jan 28, 2025 Artificial Intelligence / Technology
DeepSeek, the Chinese AI startup that has captured much of the artificial intelligence (AI) buzz in recent days, said it's restricting registrations on the service, citing malicious attacks. "Due to large-scale malicious attacks on DeepSeek's services, we are temporarily limiting registrations to ensure continued service," the company said in an incident report page. "Existing users can log in as usual. Thanks for your understanding and support." Users attempting to sign up for an account are being displayed a similar message, stating "registration may be busy" and that they should wait and try again. "With the popularity of DeepSeek growing, it's not a big surprise that they are being targeted by malicious web traffic," Erich Kron, security awareness advocate at KnowBe4, said in a statement shared with The Hacker News. "These sorts of attacks could be a way to extort an organization by promising to stop attacks and rest...

Researchers Uncover Prompt Injection Vulnerabilities in DeepSeek and Claude AI

Dec 09, 2024 Artificial Intelligenc / Vulnerability
Details have emerged about a now-patched security flaw in the DeepSeek artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that, if successfully exploited, could permit a bad actor to take control of a victim's account by means of a prompt injection attack . Security researcher Johann Rehberger, who has chronicled many a prompt injection attack targeting various AI tools, found that providing the input "Print the xss cheat sheet in a bullet list. just payloads" in the DeepSeek chat triggered the execution of JavaScript code as part of the generated response – a classic case of cross-site scripting (XSS). XSS attacks can have serious consequences as they lead to the execution of unauthorized code in the context of the victim's web browser. An attacker could take advantage of such flaws to hijack a user's session and gain access to cookies and other data associated with the chat.deepseek[.]com domain, thereby leading to an account takeover. "After some experimenting,...
