New Interrupt Injection Attack Can Bypass Spectre v2 Defenses on Intel and AMD CPUs

New Interrupt Injection Attack Can Bypass Spectre v2 Defenses on Intel and AMD CPUs

Aug 06, 2026 Vulnerability / Hardware Security
An unprivileged Linux program can time a hardware interrupt to land in the gap between a processor sanitizing its branch predictor and the kernel using it, re-poisoning the predictor after the defense has run. MIT CSAIL researchers Daniël Trujillo and Mengjia Yan named the technique INTERRUPT INJECTION . On an AMD Zen 2 machine running Linux 6.14 with every default Spectre v2 mitigation on, their exploit leaked arbitrary kernel memory at 5.47 bytes per second with 91.97% accuracy, enough to locate and read /etc/shadow, which stores the system's password hashes, in five of ten attempts. It needs no privileges, only local code execution, so the risk sits on shared systems running an affected processor. The pair disclosed to AMD and Intel on February 5. AMD told them it plans a kernel patch; MIT says one has since shipped and arrives in a normal operating system update. A fix is in the Linux kernel. The commit, "x86/bugs: Make Safe-RET robust against interrupt inject...
New Spectre-Style 'Pathfinder' Attack Targets Intel CPU, Leak Encryption Keys and Data

New Spectre-Style 'Pathfinder' Attack Targets Intel CPU, Leak Encryption Keys and Data

May 08, 2024 Data Encryption / Hardware Security
Researchers have discovered two novel attack methods targeting high-performance Intel CPUs that could be exploited to stage a key recovery attack against the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm. The techniques have been collectively dubbed  Pathfinder  by a group of academics from the University of California San Diego, Purdue University, UNC Chapel Hill, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Google. "Pathfinder allows attackers to read and manipulate key components of the branch predictor, enabling two main types of attacks: reconstructing program control flow history and launching high-resolution Spectre attacks," Hosein Yavarzadeh, the lead author of the  paper , said in a statement shared with The Hacker News. "This includes extracting secret images from libraries like libjpeg and recovering encryption keys from AES through intermediate value extraction." Spectre is the name given to a  class of side-channel attacks ...
Intel Adds Hardware-Enabled Ransomware Detection to 11th Gen vPro Chips

Intel Adds Hardware-Enabled Ransomware Detection to 11th Gen vPro Chips

Jan 13, 2021
Intel and Cybereason have partnered to build anti-ransomware defenses into the chipmaker's newly announced 11th generation Core  vPro  business-class processors. The hardware-based security enhancements are baked into Intel's vPro platform via its  Hardware Shield  and  Threat Detection Technology  (TDT), enabling profiling and detection of ransomware and other threats that have an impact on the CPU performance. "The joint solution represents the first instance where PC hardware plays a direct role in ransomware defenses to better protect enterprise endpoints from costly attacks," Cybereason  said . Exclusive to vPro, Intel Hardware Shield provides protections against firmware-level attacks targeting the  BIOS , thereby ensuring that the operating system (OS) runs on legitimate hardware as well as minimizing the risk of malicious code injection by locking down memory in the BIOS when the software is running to help prevent planted malware fro...
