ThreatsDay Bulletin: AI Tools in Malware, Botnets, GDI Flaws, Election Attacks & More

Nov 06, 2025 Cybersecurity / Hacking News
Cybercrime has stopped being a problem of just the internet — it's becoming a problem of the real world. Online scams now fund organized crime, hackers rent violence like a service, and even trusted apps or social platforms are turning into attack vectors. The result is a global system where every digital weakness can be turned into physical harm, economic loss, or political leverage. Understanding these links is no longer optional — it's survival. For a full look at the most important security news stories of the week, keep reading. Hidden flaws resurface in Windows core Security Flaws in Windows GDI Details have emerged about three now-patched security vulnerabilities in Windows Graphics Device Interface (GDI) that could enable remote code execution and information disclosure. These issues – CVE-2025-30388 , CVE-2025-53766 , and CVE-2025-47984 – involve out-of-bounds memory access triggered through malformed e...

SonicWall Investigating Potential SSL VPN Zero-Day After 20+ Targeted Attacks Reported

Aug 05, 2025 Zero-Day / Network Security
SonicWall said it's actively investigating reports to determine if there is a new zero-day vulnerability following reports of a spike in Akira ransomware actors in late July 2025. "Over the past 72 hours, there has been a notable increase in both internally and externally reported cyber incidents involving Gen 7 SonicWall firewalls where SSLVPN is enabled," the network security vendor said in a statement Monday. "We are actively investigating these incidents to determine whether they are connected to a previously disclosed vulnerability or if a new vulnerability may be responsible." While SonicWall is digging deeper, organizations using Gen 7 SonicWall firewalls are advised to follow the steps below until further notice - Disable SSL VPN services where practical Limit SSL VPN connectivity to trusted IP addresses Activate services such as Botnet Protection and Geo-IP Filtering Enforce multi-factor authentication Remove inactive or unused local user ac...

Scattered Spider Hijacks VMware ESXi to Deploy Ransomware on Critical U.S. Infrastructure

Jul 28, 2025 Cyber Attack / Ransomware
The notorious cybercrime group known as Scattered Spider is targeting VMware ESXi hypervisors in attacks targeting retail, airline, and transportation sectors in North America. "The group's core tactics have remained consistent and do not rely on software exploits. Instead, they use a proven playbook centered on phone calls to an IT help desk," Google's Mandiant team said in an extensive analysis. "The actors are aggressive, creative, and particularly skilled at using social engineering to bypass even mature security programs. Their attacks are not opportunistic but are precise, campaign-driven operations aimed at an organization's most critical systems and data." Also called 0ktapus, Muddled Libra, Octo Tempest, and UNC3944, the threat actors have a history of conducting advanced social engineering attacks to obtain initial access to victim environments and then adopting a "living-off-the-land" (LotL) approach by manipulating trusted ad...

CERT-UA Discovers LAMEHUG Malware Linked to APT28, Using LLM for Phishing Campaign

CERT-UA Discovers LAMEHUG Malware Linked to APT28, Using LLM for Phishing Campaign

Jul 18, 2025 Cyber Attack / Malware
The Computer Emergency Response Team of Ukraine (CERT-UA) has disclosed details of a phishing campaign that's designed to deliver a malware codenamed LAMEHUG . "An obvious feature of LAMEHUG is the use of LLM (large language model), used to generate commands based on their textual representation (description)," CERT-UA said in a Thursday advisory. The activity has been attributed with medium confidence to a Russian state-sponsored hacking group tracked as APT28 , which is also known as Fancy Bear, Forest Blizzard, Sednit, Sofacy, and UAC-0001. The cybersecurity agency said it found the malware after receiving reports on July 10, 2025, about suspicious emails sent from compromised accounts and impersonating ministry officials. The emails targeted executive government authorities. Present within these emails was a ZIP archive that, in turn, contained the LAMEHUG payload in the form of three different variants named "Додаток.pif, "AI_generator_uncensored_Can...
