Researchers Disclose Critical RCE Vulnerability Affecting Quarkus Java Framework

Dec 01, 2022 Kubernetes / Vulnerability Management
A critical security vulnerability has been disclosed in the Quarkus Java framework that could be potentially exploited to achieve remote code execution on affected systems. Tracked as  CVE-2022-4116  (CVSS score: 9.8), the shortcoming could be trivially abused by a malicious actor without any privileges. "The vulnerability is found in the Dev UI Config Editor, which is vulnerable to drive-by localhost attacks that could lead to remote-code execution (RCE)," Contrast Security researcher Joseph Beeton, who reported the bug,  said  in a write-up. Quarkus, developed by Red Hat, is an  open source project  that's used for creating Java applications in  containerized  and serverless environments. It's worth pointing out that the  issue  only impacts developers who are running Quarkus and are tricked into visiting a specially crafted website, which is embedded with malicious JavaScript code designed to install or execute arbitrary payload...
LibreOffice and OpenOffice Flaws Let Malicious Spreadsheets Run Code Without Macro Warnings

LibreOffice and OpenOffice Flaws Let Malicious Spreadsheets Run Code Without Macro Warnings

Oct 06, 2026 Vulnerability / Open Source
A malicious spreadsheet can make LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice run an attacker's code as soon as the file is opened, security researchers have shown. There is no warning first, of the kind either program shows before it runs a macro. The attack works only when the program's Java support is enabled. So far, it has only been shown as a proof of concept, and there are no reports of its use in real attacks. LibreOffice has already  fixed the flaw , which it tracks as CVE-2026-63277, in updates released on October 5. It recommends that users move to version 26.2.5 or 26.8.0. Versions before those are affected. Apache OpenOffice has not fixed the matching flaw, which it tracks as CVE-2026-59265. Every version up to and including its current release, 4.1.16, is affected, and the project  says a fix is expected  in version 4.1.17, which is still being tested. Until then, Apache OpenOffice users can block the attack by turning off Java in the program's settings, or by...
Unpatched Java Spring Framework 0-Day RCE Bug Threatens Enterprise Web Apps Security

Unpatched Java Spring Framework 0-Day RCE Bug Threatens Enterprise Web Apps Security

Mar 31, 2022
A zero-day remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability has come to light in the Spring framework shortly after a Chinese security researcher  briefly leaked  a  proof-of-concept  (PoC)  exploit  on GitHub before deleting their account. According to cybersecurity firm Praetorian, the unpatched flaw impacts Spring Core on Java Development Kit ( JDK ) versions 9 and later and is a bypass for another vulnerability tracked as  CVE-2010-1622 , enabling an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system. Spring is a  software framework  for building Java applications, including web apps on top of the Java EE (Enterprise Edition) platform. "In certain configurations, exploitation of this issue is straightforward, as it only requires an attacker to send a crafted HTTP request to a vulnerable system," researchers Anthony Weems and Dallas Kaman  said . "However, exploitation of different configurations will require the at...

Apache Tomcat Patches Important Remote Code Execution Flaw

Apache Tomcat Patches Important Remote Code Execution Flaw

Oct 05, 2017
The Apache Tomcat team has recently patched several security vulnerabilities in Apache Tomcat, one of which could allow an unauthorised attacker to execute malicious code on affected servers remotely. Apache Tomcat, developed by the Apache Software Foundation (ASF), is an open source web server and servlet system, which uses several Java EE specifications like Java Servlet, JavaServer Pages (JSP), Expression Language, and WebSocket, and provides a "pure Java" HTTP web server environment for Java concept to run in. Unlike Apache Struts2 vulnerabilities , which have recently been exploited to breach the systems of American credit reporting agency Equifax , Apache Tomcat flaws are less likely to be exploited. The critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability (CVE-2017-12617) discovered in Apache Tomcat is due to insufficient validation of user-supplied input by the affected software. Only systems with HTTP PUTs enabled (via setting the "read-only" initi...
FireEye spotted Critical 0-day vulnerability in Java Runtime Environment

FireEye spotted Critical 0-day vulnerability in Java Runtime Environment

Aug 27, 2012
FireEye's Malware Intelligence Lab is making the claim that there is a new zero day vulnerability in the wild that affects the latest version of Java.Researcher. Atif Mushtaq wrote on the company's blog that he spotted the initial exploit on a domain that pointed to an IP address in China. The vulnerability allows computers to be infected by simply visiting a specially crafted web page, and the malware served in the current attacks contacts a C&C server in Singapore. Researchers from heise Security have also created a PoC page using information that is publicly available. A separate post published on Monday by researchers Andre M. DiMino and Mila Parkour said the number of attacks, which appear to install the Poison Ivy Remote Access Trojan, were low. But they went on to note that the typical delay in issuing Java patches, combined with the circulation of exploit code, meant it was only a matter of time until the vulnerability is exploited more widely by other attackers. ...

Apache Tomcat Patches Important Remote Code Execution Flaw

Apr 15, 2019
The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has released new versions of its Tomcat application server to address an important security vulnerability that could allow a remote attacker to execute malicious code and take control of an affected server. Developed by ASF, Apache Tomcat is an open source web server and servlet system, which uses several Java EE specifications such as Java Servlet, JavaServer Pages (JSP), Expression Language, and WebSocket to provide a "pure Java" HTTP web server environment for Java concept to run in. The remote code execution vulnerability ( CVE-2019-0232 ) resides in the Common Gateway Interface (CGI) Servlet when running on Windows with enableCmdLineArguments enabled and occurs due to a bug in the way the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) passes command line arguments to Windows. Since the CGI Servlet is disabled by default and its option enableCmdLineArguments is disabled by default in Tomcat 9.0.x, the remote code execution vulnerability has ...

Bloody Wolf Expands Java-based NetSupport RAT Attacks in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan

Nov 27, 2025 Malware / Social Engineering
The threat actor known as Bloody Wolf has been attributed to a cyber attack campaign that has targeted Kyrgyzstan since at least June 2025 with the goal of delivering NetSupport RAT. As of October 2025, the activity has expanded to also single out Uzbekistan, Group-IB researchers Amirbek Kurbanov and Volen Kayo said in a report published in collaboration with Ukuk, a state enterprise under the Prosecutor General's office of the Kyrgyz Republic. The attacks have targeted finance, government, and information technology (IT) sectors. "Those threat actors would impersonate the [Kyrgyzstan's] Ministry of Justice through official looking PDF documents and domain names, which in turn hosted malicious Java Archive (JAR) files designed to deploy the NetSupport RAT," the Singapore-headquartered company said . "This combination of social engineering and accessible tooling allows Bloody Wolf to remain effective while keeping a low operational profile." Bloody Wol...

Malicious Advertisements Found on Java.com, Other High-Profile Sites

Aug 29, 2014
A New York-based online ad network company AppNexus, that provides a platform specializing in real-time online advertising, has again been spotted as the origin of a recent "malvertising" campaign that makes use of the Angler Exploit Kit to redirect visitors to malicious websites hosting the Asprox malware. AppNexus servers process 16 billion ad buys per day, making it the biggest reach on the open web after Google. Back in May, AppNexus was serving malicious ads targeting Microsoft’s Silverlight platform. The world’s largest Internet Video Subscription service Netflix runs on Silverlight, and because of its popularity, hackers have been loading exploit kits with Silverlight. As part of this campaign, users of several high-profile websites including Java.com, Deviantart.com, TMZ.com, Photobucket.com, IBTimes.com, eBay.ie, Kapaza.be and TVgids.nl , last week were redirected to websites serving malicious advertisements that infected visitors by installing botnet ma...
Sabpab - Another Mac os Backdoor Trojan Discovered

Sabpab - Another Mac os Backdoor Trojan Discovered

Apr 14, 2012
Sabpab - Another Mac os Backdoor Trojan Discovered Security firm Sophos has discovered more malware for the Mac OS X platform called Sabpab . It uses the same Java vulnerability as Flashback to install itself as a “drive-by download.” Users of older versions of Java now have still more malware to worry about. It also doesn't require any user interaction to infect a system either just like Flashback all that needs to happen is for you to visit an infected webpage. Sabpab, according to Sophos, installs a backdoor that allows the hackers to capture screen snapshots, upload or download files and execute commands on infected Macs remotely. The Trojan creates the files /Users/ /Library/Preferences/com.apple.PubSabAgent.pfile /Users/ /Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.PubSabAGent.plist Encrypted logs are sent back to the control server, so the hackers can monitor activity. Although one variant of Flashback installed a file in the LaunchAgents folder, not all tools for detectin...

Caphaw Banking Malware Distributed via YouTube Ads

Feb 25, 2014
More than one billion of unique visitor spend about 6 billion hours on YouTube to watch videos, according to monthly YouTube Stats. Security researchers from Bromium Labs recently found that YouTube advertising network has been abused by rogue advertisers to distribute malware. YouTube In-Stream Ads were redirecting users to malicious websites, hosting the ' Styx Exploit Kit ' and was exploiting client side vulnerabilities by drive-by-download attack to infect users' computer with Caphaw Banking Trojan . The Exploitation process relied upon a Java vulnerability ( CVE-2013-2460 ) and after getting dropped into the target computer system, the malware detects the Java version installed on the operating system and based upon it requests the suitable exploit. "We don’t yet know the exact bypass which the attackers used to evade Google’s internal advertisement security checks. Google has informed us that they’re conducting a full investigation of this abuse an...

Log4Shell-like Critical RCE Flaw Discovered in H2 Database Console

Jan 07, 2022
Researchers have disclosed a security flaw affecting H2 database consoles that could result in remote code execution in a manner that echoes the Log4j "Log4Shell" vulnerability that came to light last month. The issue, tracked as  CVE-2021-42392 , is the "first critical issue published since Log4Shell, on a component other than Log4j, that exploits the same root cause of the Log4Shell vulnerability, namely JNDI remote class loading," JFrog researchers Andrey Polkovnychenko and Shachar Menashe  said . H2  is an open-source relational database management system written in Java that can be embedded within applications or run in a client-server mode. According to the  Maven Repository , the H2 database engine is used by 6,807 artifacts. JNDI, short for Java Naming and Directory Interface, refers to an API that provides naming and directory functionality for Java applications, which can use the API in conjunction with LDAP to locate a specific resource that it might...

VEILDrive Attack Exploits Microsoft Services to Evade Detection and Distribute Malware

Nov 06, 2024 SaaS Security / Threat Detection
An ongoing threat campaign dubbed VEILDrive has been observed taking advantage of legitimate services from Microsoft, including Teams, SharePoint, Quick Assist, and OneDrive, as part of its modus operandi. "Leveraging Microsoft SaaS services — including Teams, SharePoint, Quick Assist, and OneDrive — the attacker exploited the trusted infrastructures of previously compromised organizations to distribute spear-phishing attacks and store malware," Israeli cybersecurity company Hunters said in a new report. "This cloud-centric strategy allowed the threat actor to avoid detection by conventional monitoring systems." Hunters said it discovered the campaign in September 2024 after it responded to a cyber incident targeting a critical infrastructure organization in the United States. It did not disclose the name of the company, instead giving it the designation "Org C." The activity is believed to have commenced a month prior, with the attack culminating i...

More than 600000 Macs system infected with Flashback Botnet

Apr 05, 2012
More than 600000 Macs system infected with Flashback Botnet The computer security industry is buzzing with warnings that more than half a million Macintosh computers may have been infected with a virus targeting Apple machines. Dr. Web originally reported Wednesday that 550,000 Macintosh computers were infected by the growing Mac botnet. But later in the day, Dr. Web malware analyst Sorokin Ivan announced on Twitter that the number of Macs infected with Flashback had increased to 600,000, with 274 of those based in Cupertino, Calif. Dr. Web explained that a system gets infected with the Mac Flashback trojan " after a user is redirected to a bogus site from a compromised resource or via a traffic distribution system ." A specific JavaScript code on the site that contains the virus is then used to load a Java applet, which is how the malware makes its way onto a user's computer. This Trojan spreads via infected web pages and exploits Java vulnerabilities that have be...
