Hacked security firm backs out of security conference !

Hacked security firm backs out of security conference !

Feb 17, 2011
It has really got to hurt when you run a computer security company and an outlaw hacker group manages to steal and post on the Internet embarrassing emails connecting you to much-publicized plans for crushing the enemies of large corporations through unsavory means like disinformation and cyberattacks. Especially when it happens just before one of the security industry's largest annual conferences, at which you have not only been invited to speak but have rented a booth and set up meetings with numerous executives of potential customers. That was the situation facing Greg Hoglund, CEO of HBGary Inc. of Sacramento, at the start of this week's RSA security conference in San Francisco after a pro-WikiLeaks group of hackers calling themselves "Anonymous" posted tens of thousands of emails detailing, among other things, the fact that a spin-out company called HBGary Federal helped develop proposals to combat critics of Bank of America and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce thr

Exposed : HBGary wanted to suppress Stuxnet research !

Feb 13, 2011
It is no secret that in recent days,  Anonymous Operatives  have released a cache of HBGary Federal internal emails to the public.  Crowdleaks  has discovered that within these communications,  Aaron Barr  received a copy of Stuxnet  (a computer worm that targets the types of industrial control systems (ICS) that are commonly used in infrastructure supporting facilities)  from  McAfee  on July 28, 2010. In an effort to confirm this was in fact Stuxnet,  Crowdleaks  has decompiled some of the source code, which can be found. Throughout the following emails it is revealed that  HBGary Federal  may have been planning to use Stuxnet  for their own purposes. In a message sent to all email account holders at HBGary.com,  Charles Copeland  (Lead Support Engineer at HBGary, Inc.)   writes: from: Charles Copeland to: all@hbgary.com date: Sat, Sep 25, 2010 at 9:54 PM subject: Stuxnet Worm Mailing List Filter messages from this mailing list. mailed-byhbgary.com hide details 9/25/10 Comput

Hands-on Review: Cynomi AI-powered vCISO Platform

Apr 10, 2024vCISO / Risk Assessment
The need for vCISO services is growing. SMBs and SMEs are dealing with more third-party risks, tightening regulatory demands and stringent cyber insurance requirements than ever before. However, they often lack the resources and expertise to hire an in-house security executive team. By outsourcing security and compliance leadership to a vCISO, these organizations can more easily obtain cybersecurity expertise specialized for their industry and strengthen their cybersecurity posture. MSPs and MSSPs looking to meet this growing vCISO demand are often faced with the same challenge. The demand for cybersecurity talent far exceeds the supply. This has led to a competitive market where the costs of hiring and retaining skilled professionals can be prohibitive for MSSPs/MSPs as well. The need to maintain expertise of both security and compliance further exacerbates this challenge. Cynomi, the first AI-driven vCISO platform , can help. Cynomi enables you - MSPs, MSSPs and consulting firms

HBGary Federal's Aaron Barr Resigns After being Exposed by Anonymous Hackers !

HBGary Federal's Aaron Barr Resigns After being Exposed by Anonymous Hackers ! Aaron Barr's time in the security industry's spotlight may have finally, mercifully ended. On Monday, the much-tormented chief executive of HBGary Federal announced that he has resigned from his position, three weeks after a hacking scandal that tainted not just his firm, but its partners, clients, and even the U.S. government. "I need to focus on taking care of my family and rebuilding my reputation," Barr told Threatpost. "It's been a challenge to do that and run a company. And, given that I've been the focus of much of bad press, I hope that, by leaving, HBGary and HBGary Federal can get away from some of that. I'm confident they'll be able to weather this storm." Barr had found himself at the center of a scandal that began when he told the Financial Times he planned to reveal the names of some "leaders" of the hacker group Anonymous. Anonymous responded by hacking HBGary Federal's site, stealing 71,

Anonymous hackers Expose HBGary plan to destroy WikiLeaks !

Feb 13, 2011
Data released as part of a hacking attack by the Anonymous group has shown what appears to be a corporate plan to destroy WikiLeaks. Last week Aaron Barr, head of security services firm HBGary Federal, claimed to have infiltrated the Anonymous hacking group leadership and was able to identify key players. Less than 24 hours later the group attacked HBGary Federal's servers and posted their contents on file sharing sites. An analysis of the contents revealed what appears to be a proposal, written for leading US legal firm Hunton & Williams by HBGary Federal, on how to bring down WikiLeaks through a combination of hacking and disinformation. It was prepared in conjunction with data analysis firms Palantir Technologies and consultants Berico Technologies The document suggests a campaign of misinformation involving feeding false documents into WikiLeaks and then exposing them to discredit the site's output. Hacking attacks against the central WikiLeaks document server in Sweden were

E-Mails Hacked By Anonymous Hackers Raise Concerns !

Feb 17, 2011
Late last year, activists attacked websites belonging to companies that refused to do business with WikiLeaks, an online group that has disclosed classified U.S. government documents. When the activists, who called themselves Anonymous, found out they were being investigated by the Internet security company HBGary Federal, the group hacked the company's servers and stole thousands of private e-mails. And then it dumped them onto the Internet. It was an embarrassment for the security company to get hacked — but the content of some of those e-mails is raising concerns. 'Brazen' E-mails HBGary Federal was trying to use social networks to unmask the members of Anonymous, so Anonymous struck back. One man, who calls himself Owen, says his Anonymous colleagues broke into the company's servers. Hackers have a name for what they did. "They decided to just rape his servers and take all the information they wanted," he says. "Forgive that term ... 'R

HBGary Federal hacked and exposed by Anonymous !

Feb 07, 2011
As the coin was tossed to kick off Superbowl XLV, Anonymous unleashed their anger at a security firm who had been investigating their membership. HBGary Federal had been working on unmasking their identities in cooperation with an FBI investigation into the attacks against companies who were cutting off WikiLeaks access and financing. Unlike the DDoS attacks for which Anonymous has made headlines in recent months, this incident involved true hacking skills. Anonymous compromised the HBGary website and replaced it with an image explaining their motivation. In addition to the defacement, they downloaded over 60,000 emails from the company and posted them on The Pirate Bay. The Twitter account of HBGary's CEO, Aaron Barr, was also compromised and tweeted multiple offensive messages, as well as his home address, social security number and cell phone. According to Forbes, the LinkedIn accounts of other HBGary executives were compromised "in minutes." The research, whi

The inside story of the HBGary hack by Anonymous Hackers !

Feb 16, 2011
It has been an embarrassing week for security firm HBGary and its HBGary Federal offshoot. HBGary Federal CEO Aaron Barr thought he had unmasked the hacker hordes of Anonymous and was preparing to name and shame those responsible for co-ordinating the group's actions, including the denial-of-service attacks that hit MasterCard, Visa, and other perceived enemies of WikiLeaks late last year. When Barr told one of those he believed to be an Anonymous ringleader about his forthcoming exposé, the Anonymous response was swift and humiliating. HBGary's servers were broken into, its e-mails pillaged and published to the world, its data destroyed, and its website defaced. As an added bonus, a second site owned and operated by Greg Hoglund, owner of HBGary, was taken offline and the user registration database published. Over the last week, I've talked to some of those who participated in the HBGary hack to learn in detail how t Click Here to read Complete Story.....
