RansomHub Group Deploys New EDR-Killing Tool in Latest Cyber Attacks

RansomHub Group Deploys New EDR-Killing Tool in Latest Cyber Attacks

Aug 15, 2024 Ransomware / Cybercrime
A cybercrime group with links to the RansomHub ransomware has been observed using a new tool designed to terminate endpoint detection and response (EDR) software on compromised hosts, joining the likes of other similar programs like AuKill (aka AvNeutralizer) and Terminator . The EDR-killing utility has been dubbed EDRKillShifter by cybersecurity company Sophos, which discovered the tool in connection with a failed ransomware attack in May 2024. "The EDRKillShifter tool is a 'loader' executable – a delivery mechanism for a legitimate driver that is vulnerable to abuse (also known as a 'bring your own vulnerable driver,' or BYOVD , tool)," security researcher Andreas Klopsch said . "Depending on the threat actor's requirements, it can deliver a variety of different driver payloads." RansomHub , a suspected rebrand of the Knight ransomware, surfaced in February 2024, leveraging known security flaws to obtain initial access and drop legitimate rem...
Suspicious Minds: Insider Threats in The SaaS World

Suspicious Minds: Insider Threats in The SaaS World

Aug 06, 2024 SaaS Security / Threat Detection
Everyone loves the double-agent plot twist in a spy movie, but it's a different story when it comes to securing company data. Whether intentional or unintentional, insider threats are a legitimate concern. According to CSA research , 26% of companies who reported a SaaS security incident were struck by an insider.  The challenge for many is detecting those threats before they lead to full breaches. Many security professionals assume there is nothing they can do to protect themselves from a legitimate managed user who logs in with valid credentials using a company MFA method. Insiders can log in during regular business hours, and can easily justify their access within the application.  Cue the plot twist: With the right tools in place, businesses can protect themselves from the enemy from within (and without).  Learn how to secure your entire SaaS stack from both internal and external threats Subduing Identity-Centric Threats with ITDR  In SaaS security, an Ide...

Enhancing Incident Response Readiness with Wazuh

Aug 05, 2024 Threat Detection / Network Security
Incident response is a structured approach to managing and addressing security breaches or cyber-attacks. Security teams must overcome challenges such as timely detection, comprehensive data collection, and coordinated actions to enhance readiness. Improving these areas ensures a swift and effective response, minimizing damage and restoring normal operations quickly. Challenges in incident response Incident response presents several challenges that must be addressed to ensure a swift and effective recovery from cyber attacks. The following section lists some of these challenges. Timeliness : One of the primary challenges in incident response is addressing incidents quickly enough to minimize damage. Delays in response can lead to more compromises and increased recovery costs. Information correlation : Security teams often struggle to effectively collect and correlate relevant data. Without a comprehensive view, understanding the full scope and impact of the incident becomes difficu...

Obfuscation: There Are Two Sides To Everything

Obfuscation: There Are Two Sides To Everything

Aug 01, 2024 Software Security / Threat Detection
How to detect and prevent attackers from using these various techniques Obfuscation is an important technique for protecting software that also carries risks, especially when used by malware authors. In this article, we examine obfuscation, its effects, and responses to it. What Is Obfuscation? Obfuscation is the technique of intentionally making information difficult to read, especially in computer coding. An important use case is data obfuscation, in which sensitive data is made unrecognizable to protect it from unauthorized access. Various methods are used for this.  For example, only the last four digits of a credit card number are often displayed, while the remaining digits are replaced by Xs or asterisks. In contrast, encryption involves converting data into an unreadable form that can only be decrypted using a special key. Obfuscation In Code When computer code is obfuscated, complex language and redundant logic are used to make the code difficult to understand. The a...
Magento Sites Targeted with Sneaky Credit Card Skimmer via Swap Files

Magento Sites Targeted with Sneaky Credit Card Skimmer via Swap Files

Jul 23, 2024 Threat Detection / Website Security
Threat actors have been observed using swap files in compromised websites to conceal a persistent credit card skimmer and harvest payment information. The sneaky technique, observed by Sucuri on a Magento e-commerce site's checkout page, allowed the malware to survive multiple cleanup attempts, the company said. The skimmer is designed to capture all the data into the credit card form on the website and exfiltrate the details to an attacker-controlled domain named "amazon-analytic[.]com," which was registered in February 2024. "Note the use of the brand name; this tactic of leveraging popular products and services in domain names is often used by bad actors in an attempt to evade detection," security researcher Matt Morrow said . This is just one of many defense evasion methods employed by the threat actor, which also includes the use of swap files ("bootstrap.php-swapme") to load the malicious code while keeping the original file ("bootstra...
How to Set up an Automated SMS Analysis Service with AI in Tines

How to Set up an Automated SMS Analysis Service with AI in Tines

Jul 22, 2024 Threat Detection / Employee Security
The opportunities to use AI in workflow automation are many and varied, but one of the simplest ways to use AI to save time and enhance your organization's security posture is by building an automated SMS analysis service. Workflow automation platform Tines provides a good example of how to do it. The vendor recently released their first native AI features , and security teams have already started sharing the AI-enhanced workflows they've built using the platform.  Tines' library of pre-built workflows includes AI-enhanced pre-built workflows for normalizing alerts, creating cases, and determining which phishing emails require escalations.  Let's take a closer look at their SMS analysis workflow, which, like all of their pre-built workflows, is free to access and import, and can be used with a free Community Edition account.  Here, we'll share an overview of the workflow, and a step-by-step guide for getting it up and running. The problem - SMS scam messages targete...
New Attack Technique Exploits Microsoft Management Console Files

New Attack Technique Exploits Microsoft Management Console Files

Jun 25, 2024 Vulnerability / Threat Detection
Threat actors are exploiting a novel attack technique in the wild that leverages specially crafted management saved console (MSC) files to gain full code execution using Microsoft Management Console ( MMC ) and evade security defenses. Elastic Security Labs has codenamed the approach GrimResource after identifying an artifact (" sccm-updater.msc ") that was uploaded to the VirusTotal malware scanning platform on June 6, 2024. "When a maliciously crafted console file is imported, a vulnerability in one of the MMC libraries can lead to running adversary code, including malware," the company said in a statement shared with The Hacker News. "Attackers can combine this technique with DotNetToJScript to gain arbitrary code execution, which can lead to unauthorized access, system takeover and more." The use of uncommon file types as a malware distribution vector is seen as an alternative attempt by adversaries to get around security guardrails erected ...

How to Use Tines's SOC Automation Capability Matrix

Jun 21, 2024 SOC Automation / Security Operation
Created by John Tuckner and the team at automation and AI-powered workflow platform  Tines , the  SOC Automation Capability Matrix (SOC ACM)  is a set of techniques designed to help security operations teams understand their automation capabilities and respond more effectively to incidents.  A customizable, vendor-agnostic tool featuring lists of automation opportunities, it's been shared and recommended by members of the security community since its launch in January 2023, notably by Airbnb engineer Allyn Stott in his BSides and Black Hat talk,  How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Build a Modern Detection & Response Program .   The SOC ACM has been compared to the MITRE ATT&CK and RE&CT frameworks, with one user saying, "it could be a standard for classification of SOAR automations, a bit like the RE&CT framework, but with more automation focus." It's been used by organizations in Fintech, Cloud Security, and beyond, as a basis for asses...
