Firefox Zero-Day Exploit to Unmask Tor Users Released Online

Firefox Zero-Day Exploit to Unmask Tor Users Released Online

Nov 30, 2016
Hackers are actively exploiting a zero-day vulnerability in Firefox to unmask Tor Browser users, similar to what the FBI exploited during an investigation of a child pornography site. Tor (The Onion Router) is an anonymity software that not only provides a safe heaven to human rights activists, journalists, government officials, but also is a place where drugs, assassins for hire, child pornography, and other illegal activities has allegedly been traded. A Javascript zero-day exploit currently being actively exploited in the wild is designed to remotely execute malicious code on the Windows operating system via memory corruption flaw in Firefox web browser. The exploit code was publicly published by an admin of the SIGAINT privacy-oriented public email service on the Tor-Talk mailing list. The mailing list message reveals that the zero-day exploit affecting Firefox is currently being exploited against Tor Browser users by unknown attackers to leak the potentially identifyi

NTP DoS Exploit Released — Update Your Servers to Patch 10 Flaws

Nov 23, 2016
A proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit for a critical vulnerability in the Network Time Protocol daemon (ntpd) has been publically released that could allow anyone to crash a server with just a single maliciously crafted packet. The vulnerability has been patched by the Network Time Foundation with the release of NTP 4.2.8p9, which includes a total of 40 security patches, bug fixes, and improvements. The NTP daemon is used in almost every device that needs to synchronize time on computer clocks. NTP got the most attention in late 2014 and 2015 when hackers used it to launch highly amplified DDoS attacks against services. The flaw which affects NTP.org's nptd versions prior to 4.2.8p9, but not including ntp-4.3.94, has been discovered by security researcher Magnus Stubman, who privately disclosed it to the Network Time Foundation on June 24. A patch for the vulnerability was developed and sent to Stubman on 29th September and just two days later, the researcher acknowledged t

Making Sense of Operational Technology Attacks: The Past, Present, and Future

Mar 21, 2024Operational Technology / SCADA Security
When you read reports about cyber-attacks affecting operational technology (OT), it's easy to get caught up in the hype and assume every single one is sophisticated. But are OT environments all over the world really besieged by a constant barrage of complex cyber-attacks? Answering that would require breaking down the different types of OT cyber-attacks and then looking back on all the historical attacks to see how those types compare.  The Types of OT Cyber-Attacks Over the past few decades, there has been a growing awareness of the need for improved cybersecurity practices in IT's lesser-known counterpart, OT. In fact, the lines of what constitutes a cyber-attack on OT have never been well defined, and if anything, they have further blurred over time. Therefore, we'd like to begin this post with a discussion around the ways in which cyber-attacks can either target or just simply impact OT, and why it might be important for us to make the distinction going forward. Recently released NSA exploit from " The Shadow Brokers " leak that affects older versions of Cisco System firewalls can work against newer models as well. Dubbed ExtraBacon , the exploit was restricted to versions 8.4.(4) and earlier versions of Cisco's Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) – a line of firewalls designed to protect corporate, government networks and data centers. However, the exploit has now been expanded to 9.2.(4) after researchers from Hungary-based security consultancy SilentSignal were able to modify the code of ExtraBacon to make it work on a much newer version of Cisco's ASA software. Both Cisco and Fortinet have confirmed their firewalls are affected by exploits listed in the Shadow Brokers cache that contained a set of " cyber weapons " stolen from the Equation Group . The Equation Group is an elite hacking group tied to the NSA's offensive Tailored Access Operations (TAO) and linked to the previous infamous Regin and S

BitTorrent Forum Hacked; Change your Password Immediately

Jun 08, 2016
If you are a torrent lover and have registered on  BitTorrent community forum website, then you may have had your personal details compromised, along with your hashed passwords. The BitTorrent team has announced that its community forums have been hacked, which exposed private information of hundreds of thousands of its users. As of now, BitTorrent is the most visited torrent client around the world with more than 150 Million monthly active users. Besides this, BitTorrent also has a dedicated community forum that has over hundreds of thousands of registered members with tens of thousands of daily visitors. A recent security alert by the team says the forum database has been compromised by hackers who were able to get their hands on its users' passwords, warning its users to update their passwords as soon as possible. The vulnerability is believed to be originated at one of its vendors, who alerted the BitTorrent team about the issue earlier this week. "The vulnera

FBI paid Hacker $1.3 Million to Unlock San Bernardino Shooter's iPhone

Apr 22, 2016
In Brief Guess how much the FBI has paid an unknown grey-hat hacker to break into San Bernardino Shooter's iPhone? FBI Director James Comey hinted during an interview that the FBI spent more than $1.3 Million for breaking into the iPhone of a suspected terrorist and found nothing useful on it. Apple's  legal battle with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) ended following the bureau's announcement last month that it bought a hacking tool to break into the locked iPhone 5C belonging to the alleged San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook. At the time, the FBI did not disclose the name of the third party neither it revealed the cost of the hacking tool. But yesterday while speaking at the Aspen Security Forum in London, FBI Director James Comey gave a hint on the price it gave to the unnamed "outside party" for the hacking solution after Apple refused to help the agency bypass the iPhone's security mechanisms. The FBI Paid Over $1.3 MILLION f

Crashing Google Email App for Android Just By Sending a Malicious Email

Feb 18, 2015
A vulnerability has been discovered in the wildly popular Google's Stock Android Email App , that could be exploited by malicious attackers to remotely crash your smartphone application just by sending a specially crafted email. A Spain security researcher, Hector Marco , successfully exploited the vulnerability on his Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini running version 4.2.2.0200 of Stock Android Email App. He said the flaw appears to affect all older versions of Stock Android Email App, though devices running 4.2.2.0400 and newer versions are not affected. According to the researcher, when the victim receives the malicious email and tries to view it, the email app crashes. Further attempts to open the email again triggers a crash in the application before the victim can do anything. The flaw ( CVE-2015-1574 ) is due to incorrect handling of the Content-Disposition header . Hackers could exploit the vulnerability by sending an email with a malformed Content-Disposition header to th
